Pink walls, black & white accents for a Parisienne flair if she is on the dramatic side...you could use Eiffle towers, pink poodles in berets, etc.
If she is more bohemian in style, a Middle-Eastern flair would be neat, I am envisioning turquoise satins, browns, & golds...use sari fabric as dramatic window scarves...accesorize with cultural/travel related goodies
If she is studious...ask her either her desired college, using school colors on opposite walls, using school themed accessories, maybe even a dorm fridge & small tv for her future dorm!
If she is of a romantic nature, a tuscan themed room with ornate tapestry bedspread, taup-ish textured walls would be her dream!
If she like sports...go that direction....best idea yet, ask her what she likes & design as a team! Ask her fave color, etc....it would be a GREAT bonding time!

One year bright colored walls are OK, now not, formerly, big bulky furniture, now small compact.

The manufacturers always have a lot to say about what is being made, in a very real way. They are looking for innovative ways to keep new products on the market that are accessible for the public to buy, as well as products they can make at a profit. Manufacturers also always want to keep new looks out there, pushing trendy items so that people who want to stay on top of these trends will be buying them.
As far as decor, anything can influence trends.
Since 9/11 happened, there has been a lot more patriotic themed stuff out there: Americana furniture, red-white-and-blue, eagles, flags, military inspired clothing, etc.
When there is an advancement in some area of the world, such as a new bridge, a cultural venue such as a museum or convention center, or a booming tourist economy, or a new vehicle or boat comes out that gets you to more remote places, people tend to travel there and then get inspired to decorate their homes that way. SO trends like bringing the outdoors in...cottage, beach, tropical, rustic, coastal, lighthouses, mountains, gardens, etc start to emerge out of peoples' vacations, in terms of colors and themes, and regional styles. Of course the high rollers are the ones who start these trends, and the rest of us buy the lower cost items that reflect the trend. I can't afford a Humvee but if I am redecorating my living room, I may be able to leave some beams exposed ala ski chalet, which resembles the resort that the guy with the Humvee went to.
Environmental concerns have also raised our interest in outdoor/nature themes and colors in our lives. And building styles become cool, that may not have been in the past...such as lots of windows, or a roofline that accomodates solar panels, or found materials such as recycled timber for a cabin, or earth and stone which inspire us to build mission, spanish, mediterranean style homes...these homes become cool-looking because there is a push to build things in a certain way in response to environmental concerns.
Pop culture always has a hand in trends. The newest cartoon ends up on your kids' bedsheets. The recent fantasy/action movies like Lord of the Rings may make us think about more medieval decor, as well as fantasy creatures etc. A new Enya CD may inspire us to go green and celtic decor. The new space movie will get us thinking about sleek and modern looking items. Gwen Stefani got every teenage girl in the country into track pants and sports bras. Entertainment trends are often the result of new ways of MAKING the entertainment, such as the special effects technology that gives us Quidditch and puts us in a wizardy, sporty frame of mind. OR the computer program that allowed battle scenes to be done in Lord of the Rings, and then Troy, and then Narnia...this technology made those movies possible and brought out whatever themes into our homes.
Generally, trends in homes, vehicles, clothing follow each other. If red is the hot color it will be everywhere. Remember FOREST green? That color was plastered EVERYWHERE!
