Constructing a house from the scratch..need tips with interior decorating?

Lady S

I need home decor ideas. Couldn't find any help online..can any of you help me find free online websites for ideas of bedrooms, bathrooms. living room etc? Thanks :)

Answer
websites; can't help you there. However . . .

We did a MAJOR remodeling on our home. What was a super help was my idea of drafting out the entire main level and entire lower level on graph paper. I took exact measurements of each room and used one graph square as one foot, added each room onto the graph paper until one entire level on home was marked. Mark onto your paper the windows (& their size), vents, doors/doorways and even add outlets. After I finished each level on each sheet, I used a thin black marker to make the rooms permanent onto the paper. Now, these sheets can be used to determine square footage for the amount of paint needed for each room, how much square footage needed for carpet, ceramic tiles, wood flooring and even curtain sizes. (later I used same sheets to 'place' furniture before moving it and would know if pieces fit or would be blocking a vent or hiding too many outlets, etc...)
I carried my sheets in my purse for many months while making various decisions and never had to keep remeasuring). Couple years later I did a graph paper for my yard & had measurements handy again for fencing, posts, size gate needed and even for trees, shrubs, other plantings, fountain and statues.

Find a 'theme' for each room. Me - - I decorated living room in big cats such as tigers, cheetahs, leopards, lions, etc... Did dining room with seashells, including tables center piece. Did bedroom with Steve's semi and train stuff. Did bathroom as just basic plain items (neutral so he doesn't have to see 'girl' stuff like pink or flowers). Did western in my computer room. etc.... Go with what items you collect or really like and what room are you going to put these items in.

Look at the items going into that one room. What are the main colors of these items? Also, what is the color you plan to use on the floor or floor covering. This will help determine your wall colors. Use brighter but matching colors for accents within the room.

I picked a mint green wall paint for my living room and adjourning dining room with a small flowery and scalloped wallpaper border. In the kitchen, I picked white 4' X 8' panels for walls. The ones I picked can be washed and stand up to abuse. These were installed onto the wall prior to cabinets or baseboards. In the kitchen, I also put up a wallpaper border that had a plum, maroon & green tapestry. Since I had some antique bowls, jars, etc... and put these items on top of the wall cabinets with fake green vines drapping over some of these items.

You will find what works for you and what I have done to each room may not be something you would like, but hopefully, it may give you some ideas.

We did other things inside and out that saved us money such as 'making' our own baseboards, etc...

I want to add some color and excitement to my room. i recently moved and got stuck with my parents' old furniture and bed set. don't get me wrong i like it but its a little too old for my taste and I want to liven it up a bit. i'm a 17year old girl and i was just wondering if anyone could show me links or something to a safari/leopard/cheetah/african themed bedroom online or places where i could purchase decor. I still want to keep my room looking sophisticated but just more fun. thanks for everyone who submits!

Answer
I have to say I admire you for stepping out and daring to be different. I love the Safari/British Colonial/Mediterranean look. I have used this look in my own home, as well as other properties I have worked on. The end result was great sophistication and visual appeal with pizazz.

Some of the best places I have found to begin building the look for a fraction of the cost are TJ Maxx has tons of items relating back to this theme. Great Prices too! Also, Marshalls, Home Goods stores, Odd Lots, Big Lots, Ocean State Job Lots, etc. all have furniture with animals on them, palm trees, bedding, decorative plates, vases, candle holders, animal print sheets, artwork all really good prices.

No one would ever know where the stuff came from, and would think you were very well traveled and actually visited around the globe to get all these great items. Also, consider purchasing old leather steam trunks to not only look great, but store stuff in. Stack several medium sized ones for bedside end tables. Check Ebay and your local www.craigslist.com

Consider making you own canopy out of mosquito netting, or buying one to hang above your bed. Check ebay under mosquito netting canopy. Sells for $10.99 in a multitude of colors or more ornate mosquito canopies go for $39.95 on ebay.

Lastly, I have always gotten my inspiration from Ernest Hemingway and what his home looked like during his African adventures that he wrote about. It reflected well travelled individual with global rustic elements. This look can be achieved without the cost of travelling to find your treasures.

I like the pink and leopard print idea, but you might want to consider using a simple brown comforter and accenting with the leopard stuff. Otherwise, you might get sick of it. Hope you like some of the things I found for you. Good luck!

Sarah

I am redecorating my bedroom in a couple of weeks and need some ideas on how i can switch things up. I am a 21 year old girl who is earthy but also very girly. i like hippie but also like feminine.
my room is olive green/ spit pea soup green and is currently a jungle theme with like cheetah and zebra and monkeys and elephants. i want to keep a couple of things but i am trying to figure out what accent color i can choose. my bed frame and the other furniture is black. i was thinking like a fuishia or gold. any ideas and suggestions are welcome.

Answer
honestly to get rid of all the zoo animal prints...and supplies etc...

go for a more mature look

i have that olive green color also and trim it with a burgundy

i think on the walls keep it simple and mature with wall decore from bed bath and beyond...all wall decor is in the beyond area...

maybe some framed photos on one wall of family and another wall of special interests...

a desk area with memo board...calendar

keep it simple which keeps it uncluttered

i would so a chic earthy bedspread and a tan brownish green throw carpet from like target

relax

vote for a best answer
