Moving to Juneau, Alaska?

I am a young (23 yr) single university student considering moving to Juneau Alaska if offered a full time medical position in a hospital. I was wondering how realistic it would be to move on my own not having any relatives/friends up there in Alaska? Has anyone done this before? I'd like to hear any personal experiences and advice please :) I thought it might be easier since I don't have any kids or any major things to move, and I am trying to save up a little money to rent a small 1 bedroom place (hopefully they allowing dogs). Thank you!
I forgot to mention that I would be leaving from Florida, so the difference in expenses would be pretty big :/ (and yes I enjoy the cold!) and honestly I'm open to any part of Alaska, just thought I should try my luck with Juneau first :)

I presume you are trying to get on at Bartlett Regional or SEARHC. If you have only checked one, don't forget to check the other for a job. They are both quite close to each other.

I am not sure where you are coming from, but I guess that is kind of irrelevant.

First, I want to touch on a bit of geography. The hospital/SEARHC is located between downtown Juneau and the area known as "the Valley". There is a neighborhood close to the hospital called Lemon Creek. If you are tight on money and won't have a car, there are apartments and a mobile home park in Lemon Creek. The bus line runs right through there. One direction would be the hospital. the other direction would be Fred Meyers/Wal-Mart where you can get most anything you need.

The distance between downtown and the Valley is about 8 miles. This is a long drive to the locals. Past the Valley is Auke Bay. Across the bridge from downtown is Douglas (in case you hear these name later or you want to google things to get an idea where they are relative to each other).

Unless you are coming from the downtown area of a big city, Juneau is going to be expensive. A gallon of gas there right now is in the $3.90's. A case of soda will put you back about $12. A 1 bedroom apartment will set you back about $1000/month. If you plan on bringing a car, you have to drive to Haines or Skagway and then it will cost you a couple hundred dollars to put the car on the ferry to Juneau. Once you are in Juneau, you need to fly out or hop the ferry again (a good fare between Juneau and Chicago is $650, a typical fare is $800 to 900).

If you were a family member, i would tell you the following:

1. Ditch the dog if you can, at least initially. While I have never tried to rent an apartment there with a dog, I have heard that a lot of places don't want animals. I would try to line someone up who can watch the dog for a few months to a year until you can find a place that will take a dog and return to get the dog, or get yourself established so you can find a place that will take a dog.

2. Almost anything you rent in the downtown Juneau area is going to be "older" if that is an issue for you.

3. Things might be a bit cheaper in Douglas, but most of the stores are on the Juneau side and there is only 1 bridge between the two islands.

4. If you don't have a car, shoot for a place near Lemon Creek as it won't be a terrible bus ride either to work or for groceries

5. Know what to do when you see a bear. Bears are nowhere, everywhere, and anywhere. I've bumped into them right downtown by the highschool. They are a fact of life up there.

6. If you will be in a position where you are dealing with the public in the hospital, remember you are in Alaska. Things don't operate the same there as they do in the lower 48. You have to understand how an Alaskan operates otherwise you will tend to be an unpopular "outsider".

7. Costco is your friend. I can tell you that the prices at Costco in Juneau are pretty darn close to the prices at Costco in Chicago.

8. Take up hiking. The Juneau area as a myriad of trails and you should make it a point to hike them all. You will see a number of beautiful sights.

9. A case of beer can usually get a person to take you fishing on their boat. Juneau from the water offers a whole other level of beauty.

If I were to pick up and move tomorrow to Juneau, how much money would I bring? A 1 bedroom place will run about $1000/mo, so I'd have about $3K for first, last, and deposit. You will need money to get there via plane or car. As I mentioned before, the ferry will run about $200 for you plus the car from Haines or Skagway. Beyond that, i would bring $2K for food and to buy a mattress to put on the floor from Costco. I would recommend having at least $5K plus travel expenses saved up (assuming you have a job lined up).

I have 16 years experience working in early childhood education and now after all these working at a childcare center I want to operate a small in home childcare / preschool out of my home.

I am not licensed yet but have at least 60 references - I'm thinking of taking just
4 or 5 children -
I want to operate it from like 7:30-5:00
or 5:30.
I'd want to accept children between 3-5.
I also want to accept only full time -
holidays I will extended hours .

Id like to know how much I could charge-?
I'm going to provide a preschool curriculum and snacks / possibly lunch ( but was thinking the kids could bring their own lunches.)
I have three dogs and two cats - but only the golden retriever and poodle would be around the kids all day .

Id like to know is it okay to get toys from like garage sales and online etc?

My home is 1,300 sq ft
and the entire living room and a bedroom will be the childcare area.

My backyard is small but big enough for some playskool play houses etc- there is a park nearby with a huge playground .

how do I set up the rates - like the tuition ?
is there a new " start up enrollment fee?"
I was thinking $160 per child .
Do I get a payment weekly - how do I set up a time for me to take vacation each year , etc?

Also besides some pArents I already know-
where do I find my new enrolles?

Any other info would be helpful?

See if your state has set up what is called a Market Rate for childcare. This is the rate Social Services uses. Or contact your local child care resource and referral agency and see if they have information. You can try calling family day care homes in your area and see if they will tell you over the phone but many won't. On Long Island, where I live, the average charge for full time preschoolers is about $250 a week but that varies widely according to neighborhood.

So, i had this dream a couple of months ago and I suppose it's safe to say that i'm obsessed with it. I think about it all the time. It practically invades my thoughts. So here it is.
It started out with me in this garage. I was looking for a baseball (i don't play baseball so i don't know.) The walls of the garage were wooden, but it was painted red. There was shelves of tools, and tools hanging up on hooks. There was a built-in bench made of wood that was painted red as well. The garage was connected to the house. There was a brown station wagon parked in garage. Even though they weren't in the dream, i knew that these people lived there. There was the wife, who had blonde hair and the husband who was a bit heavy set, and was bald on top. The blonde-haired wife had glasses. (May I mind you, i don't have any idea who these people are in real life.) I felt like I knew this house. I knew every aspect of it. I felt like I was in a different time period, as if it was the late 80s. I found the baseball and since the garage door was open, I darted out into their drive way. I was in this neighborhood that seemed very familiar. As if I lived there myself. There were houses lining the streets, and garbage cans in the road. Basketball nets, etc. But nobody was around. Nobody in sight. I heard birds chirping, but that's it. Suddenly, I blink my eyes and I'm inside the house whose garage, I was just in. I was in their son's bedroom. The bedroom had the walls were painted blue. His shades were down. The closet door was wooden-brown, along with his bedroom furniture. The border of the room was brown wood too. I felt like I knew this kid, and his bedroom. The kid was a year older than me so that'd make him 15. He had blonde hair, and he was actually rather good looking. His bedsheets were plaid, and he had a twin mattress. He had a small RCA tv on his dresser that had "Different Strokes" on. And we were sitting on his bed talking about how we both like that show. I remember him having this poster on his wall, that said "Flotsam and Jetsam" which I have no idea what the hell "Flotsam and Jetsam" is. It seemed to be some sort of band, that I don't know. For some reason that song, "Bennie and The Jets" was playing in the background, as if it was coming from downstairs. His door was shut. Then suddenly, he stands up and walks by the door and goes "You can't be here! This isn't yours! Get out! You can't do anything here! Please go!" and he starts panicking. So, me I'm just sitting on his bed and I'm like "What?!" and then I realize that I have no idea where I am and I start to worry. He shrugs and then he comes over to me and like I'm sitting at the edge of his bed. He acts like he's about to kiss me so I lean back. He starts smiling and says something like "this is really bad. i dont even know why your here. this is crazy" and the dream ends. I feel like I know this kid. It's annoying the hell out of me. He has dark brown eyes, and a small birthmark on his arm. Everything is so detailed. Everything. And for some strange reason I feel like the house/neighborhood I'm dreaming about is somewhere in Nassau County, Long Island where my aunt lives? I know, I know. I sound crazy. But I know for a fact that this dream takes place in the late 80's, and I know for a fact that this person is an adult right now. I don't know why I keep thinking about this. Considering this dream happened in March, and It's now August and I'm only 14 and this is really scaring me. I really think about it all the time. I don't know my feelings about this person. As if i love them or something. I don't know. Its strange. Someone tell me what this means.

I know a grown man who said that when he was a teenage boy, everything seemed to excite him--but that did not mean he was gay. It's just how teens work. You can't control your dreams. It is likely nothing to worry about. I have mixed up, weird dreams all the time. You likely watched a how-to show, once--hence the tools in the garage, etc.

Hey everybody out there! I was just wondering if this was a good story for me to write. Its kind of based on personal experience. Well here it is:

Iâm fourteen years old, I go to a public-school, Iâm an honors-student and I live on Long Island, New York. My full name is Kaitlyn Marie Step. I have one sister, Celia, and two brothers, Craig and Ken. Craig moved out of the house last year. He lives with his friends now, in some apartment in the city. Kenâs only four years old. He has his own bedroom next to my parents. Celia is eight. She sleeps in the room across the hall from me.

I turned fourteen last night. My parents got me a computer for my room. They said that I am old enough to have a computer, and responsible enough. Iâm probably not going to use it that much. Maybe a few days a week. For homework, obviously.

I donât really like computer-games. They donât fascinate me. Or chat-rooms. My mom said that I can have an AIM but I canât go on chat-rooms. Iâm fine with that idea. I donât need anymore friends anyways. Iâve used my computer though. Quite a bit actually. I set up my AIM which I completely adore. Iâve talked to my friends about my surprise-birthday-party from yesterday. It was all good.

Craig never had a computer in his room. So it would be the first time for my parents having a kid with a computer in their bedroom.

Also, last night I was given a responsibility talk about having a computer. Like I shouldnât give any personal info out, I should always have a private-profile on AIM, what I was allowed and wasnât allowed to do. It was just a general type thing. I understood what my parents meant by it. I mean, it made perfect sense. I also planned to follow those rules that my mom had given me. She talked about online-predators, Pedi files, perverts, and such. A talk that every parent should give their kid before allowing them to have a computer in their bedroom. I told my mom I understood everything that she had said and why. If I were her, Iâd be nervous too giving my kid a computer. She trusts me. And anyways, now I wonât have to be downstairs disrupting my mom when sheâs on the computer checking her facebook (which Iâm also not allowed to have), or my dad when he has to do work on it, or my sister when sheâs doing her homework. I said that my sister could do her homework on my computer. Just so I could be nice and prove how responsible and caring I am.

All I have to do is follow my momâs simple rules. Itâs not that hard. I know I can do it.
Chapter 1: Online: Three months later


Iâve been on this chat-room for three hours now. Since ten oâclock tonight. Itâs one oâclock now. My eyes are killing me. Iâm just talking with this guy I met a few weeks after I got my computer. Yes, I did break the rules. I am on a chat-room. My mom doesnât know though. She shouldnât know. I donât want her to. If she knew sheâd take away the computer and I wouldnât be able to talk to this guy. His name is Dempsey. Heâs seventeen. He lives with his mom, his father died when he was young. He has a younger brother whoâs ten. My mom thinks Iâm doing homework.

And you know, telling small white lies is apart of life right? I mean, come awwn! Itâs Dempsey! Heâs a high-school quarterback, and I didnât believe him till he convinced me. He showed me pictures and everything. I did do a web-video with him too. Only, he got to see me because he said that he didnât have one but he showed me pictures.

In the pictures he had his football helmet on. I looked him up, and he was real. His name is Dempsey Shoal. Heâs number seven on the team.

I told Dempsey that Iâm a soccer-player. The best in my high-school too. Heâs really interested in my life. He asks me about my family, and how was school. I always tell him good. I donât want him being too concerned over me. Although I know that heâs seventeen, I donât care. And neither does he. He said that heâs already told his whole school about me. Aaaand he considers me his girlfriend!! Every time I talk to him I get butterflies in my stomach. All my spirits are lifted.

I did tell my best-friend Lisi Ably about him. I had to. She thinks that heâs a fake and whatever so I stopped updating her about him two weeks ago. It was a must. Why does she always have to think that everyone from the internet is such a perv? Thatâs not true. Plenty of people out there are just like me.

Personally, I think that online romance is great. You get to know the person before knowing the way that they look. You get to know the soul before their looks. Their inner-selves. The inner beauty.

Dempsey and I discussed meeting up in the future. And heee wasnât the one who brought it up. I was. I just slightly mentioned it to him, because I wanted to know if he had thought about that. And he said that he did. He said that heâd wait for me to be ready. Because true love always waits.

Vacation to South Carolina ideas?

So I'm going to South Carolina on vacation. Most of the trip will be spent in Charleston and Myrtle Beach. What are some fun activities, places to see, restaurants to eat at, etc?

Myrtle Beach is a great place to vacation!!
Great time to visit, the weather is usually nice. Cool mornings & nights (light jackets or long sleeves). Sunny and warm (bathing suit temps) during the day.

Hotel prices range from nice/cheap to glamorous/expensive. There are houses for rentals, rv parks, state parks for camping and the prices for these are reasonable.

As far as attractions go...

Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede (dinner & show) $30
Alligator Adventure (Barefoot Landing) is great!! ($10/$15)
Ripley's Aquiriam ..well worth it ($15)
Alabama Theater (Barefoot Landing) $ depends on who's there
House of Blues (Barefoot Landing) $depends on who's showcasing
Ripley's Believe It or Not! (Ocean Blvd.) $ change depending on the season
The Bowery (Ocean Blvd) usually no cover
Great music/bar..starting point of country legends Alabama
There is an amusement park (small one) on Ocean Blvd. that's ok...the larger one (the Pavilion) they tore down last summer

Myrles Inlet is crammed full of great restaraunts...
Casino Boats, Airplane/helicopter rides, Bungee jumping, boats & wave runners for rent...2 huge malls, lots of factory outlets for shopping.
Huntington Beach State Park has an old abondon castle you can roam around in ($3 fee for park entry)
BrookGreen Gardens (between Pawley's Island and Murrells Inlet) has beautiful gardens and unique (huge) statues to ck out.
Lots of great places to eat too.
They also have a live band & dancing on the pier at Garden City.
It's a great place, you won't be bored!!!

Charleston...does not have any "beach front" hotels. There are hotels on the river & over looking the harbor, but no beaches.
Isle of Palms & Sullivan's Island have beaches as they are both islands. They do have houses for rent and there are reasonably priced "condos" that they rent out. Isle of Palms has a "resort"..ie it's like a hotel, but each unit has a bedroom, kitchen, living room area & a bathroom. Each has a pull out couch & a set of bunk beds as well. They are very nice and beach front. Look up Island Realty for a reservation. Nice uncrowded beach, pool and a few nice restaurants within walking distance. The Windjammer has live music & is just a few doors down. (Far enough not to bother the guest staying nearby. Also close to grocery stores & a shopping complex. (Those are on the mainland just over the bridge..about 3 miles from the beach). The islands are located near Mt. Pleasent (just on the other side of the bridge from Charleston). You'll find plenty to do. From Patriot's Point (retired aircraft carrier), Fort Moultrie & Fort Sumter, Boone Hall Plantation (they filmed many movies here) to the old slave market to walking ghost tours. The Battery & Rainbow Row are beautiful. There is also an Aquarium & an Imax theater.

Edisto Island which is just out of Charleston does not have hotels , but has a complex similiar to the one at Isle of Palms. Beautiful beach, quiet, nice restaurants, 2 bars with live music on the weekends (kid friendly) golf course. There is also a State Park there that rents cabins, but book early. There is an interactive nature center (no admission) & a serpentarium (small fee but worth it).
Anyway, I hope you enjoy your vacation no matter where you stay. Hope this helped.
