How can I make my room have an old New York City apartment feeling?

Q. I'm redoing my room and I have a smokey grey-blue comforter. I don't really want a theme, just stuff that goes good together.. I'm really inspired by the band Bright Eyes and rainy days... I just don't know how to transform that into a room. I love emerald green, seafoam green, blue-greys, browns, deep reds, purples, etc.
