What would you change about your house layout if you could design it yourself?

My husband and I are building our own home and we want to make sure we consider all sorts of different advantages and disadvantages of layouts for our rooms. I asked this question in other categories, but I didn't get the type of response I was looking for. I'm a mother of a 1 year old and plan on having several more, so I realized I need mother's opinions - hence the question in this category! Let me know what you think thanks!

Answer
Well, layouts were a BIG issue when we were looking for a house. It's the main reason we bought the one we did.

Our living room and kitchen are very open. There isn't a door, or even a doorway. Just a narrow opening between the two. It's clearly seperated by a wall, but from the living room, I can see the majority of my kitchen, and vice versa. Also, from my LR I can see into the hallway, the front and back doors, and into the laundry room. From my kitchen, I can see almost the entire way down the hallway where my daughter's room is.

This also makes my house look a LOT bigger than it is! :)

When you have kids, open floor plans are always the best. You can keep tabs on your kids better, they don't have to worry about running into things, closing doors on themselves, etc. If I don't want her to go back into the bedroom area, I either shut all the doors, or I put a play gate up to block the hallway from the rest of the house.

I would also stay away from steps if possible and keep it one story. It's safer for your kids, and for you. It's difficult to navigate steps when you are 8-9 months pregnant.

Good luck! That's so exciting!!

Layout help for a fresh new room design?

My brother is going to uni soon and I'm getting his room. This means a new blank canvas to design my room however I want. The room size is 3.17m by 3.75m, and one of the shorter sides has a window taking up 2.3m. I am a 15 year old guy and I want a minimalistic look and feel, a nice spacious comfy room where I can chill out and have space to think. I like gaming with my friends, computing, photography and film-making.

I would like to include in my layout: my camera equipment and an iMac, a guitar(I have a wall mount) and amp, my xbox 360 and a TV(possibly wall mounted?) I also need somewhere unnoticed to store my clothes and possessions.

Any ideas for my room layout and design I would really appreciate, pictures would also help me greatly! Thank you, Sam
I would like my room to be comfy and modern style, I also need suggestions on what colour/s for my room. I am looking into any other comfy additions.

To keep your clothes, etc. out of sight you can use inexpensive closet organizers as described here (with photos) http://jansseninteriors.blogspot.com/2011/08/storage-organizing-closets-small-spaces.html

Minimalistic boy's room with photos see here http://jansseninteriors.blogspot.com/2011/07/teen-bedroom-tween-bedroom-kids-bedroom.html

For simple white window coverings I like the 2" faux wood blinds. In the U.S. Home Depot sells them, and they can be cut to fit the window at no extra charge. They give complete control of the light, so that you won't have glare on your TV or game screen.
