Answer
yes go with a neutral color like soft green or baby blue but come back and use cling art stickers ( they peel off). they might have a pirate theme or a boat theme set. if not then bring in your theme with lamps and clocks and wall art. however i like the idea of using a glaze to stamp on a cross bones pattern to your wall in a border pattern around room.

Would you paint a nursery brown?

Joel's Mom

My little boy is due this December, and I've always thought a brown nursery would be cute.
A darker brown, but not TOO dark.

I'm going to get the Fisher Price Rainforest Set, which is full of greens and browns and blues and bright colors, and I thought brown would look nice.

Would you paint a nursery brown?
If not, why not?
I was thinking brown because it you're familiar with the rainforest nursery set, it's VERY obnoxiously bright, and so I thought a neutral wall tone would kind of tone it down a little.

Answer
My bedroom is brown, the nursery is a mossy green (dark-ish but not dark). A bedroom should be calming, not exciting! My baby sisters room was bright, bright, bright yellow and I won't say its the only reason she never slept there but it couldn't help!

If you find brown appealing and calming (as I do) then go for it. Remember the nursery is more for you anyway.

Browns can be "natural" or "woody" and feel cosy, and sometimes "country". Browns of course are used in a lot of "nature" themes which can be "country" or "contemporary".

Browns are often used in classic "french" styles which are very elegant.

Browns can be used in "handsome" themes. Think old maps, pirate ships. Browns can be very nice when mixed with blue.

I could go on and on but basically brown can be warm, or cool depending on how it is used. It can fade away and allow other elements to show off, or it can be powerful. It can be elegant or country. It can be handsome or pretty.
Oh and one other word about darker colours -its really important not to go glossy -it really tends to look weird with the reflections. Lots of paints have a between matte and eggshell which is nice, or eggshell is fine.

Your bedroom is the first and last place that you see each dayâa private sanctuary of your very own. It's also the place where you spend about a third of your life; it should revitalize your spirit each time you awake.

Because they are private spaces, bedrooms allow more flexibility than other rooms in regard to color, style and décor, making the decorating opportunities for these rooms almost endless (see Defining Your Decorative Style feature).

Just remember, above all, the atmosphere you create in your bedroom should be harmonious and comforting.

Base your design thinking around colors, textures, fabrics and objects that make you feel calm, serene and secure. The bedroom is also the place for the things that are most dear to youâwhether that's art, photographs or personal mementos.

Neutrals
Neutral (see The Hidden Power of Neutrals feature) colors are also an excellent choice for bedrooms. Neutrals are very soothingâquietly elegant, these subtle hues are calm and understated.

Using neutral colors also offers a lot of flexibility for décor. Since neutrals go with everything, it's possible to make subtle changesâbedding, artwork, and window coverings, for exampleâto give the room a new, updated look, without having to repaint the entire room.

Neutral colors are another favorite choice for bedrooms, as they allow the occupant to inject a dash of unexpected color throughout the space. Neutral tones also provide for easy rearranging of accessories as well as seasonal decorating within the bedroom. Maximize neutral color schemes and monochromatic color schemes in the bedroom by adding sufficient texture, via interesting bed linens, window treatments, floor coverings and wall coverings.

The real neutral colors are white, black, and any mixture of these two, that is, all the different shades of gray.

Sometimes brown is seen in the neutral neighborhood as well, but strictly speaking, brown is not neutral. It is a mix of many different colors, among them yellow, orange, red, black, and green.

However, since most woods are a shade of brown, and much of our furniture is wooden, we are so used to seeing brown within decorating color schemes that it appears neutral to us.

Now to the second part of the question: Using neutrals in decorating color schemes does require a special way of looking at your room. Youâll find more about this in the chapter on

http://interiordesign.lovetoknow.com/Choosing_Paint_colors_for_a_Room
Neutral colors are mood neutral and can work just about anywhere.
