Teen beach themed bedroom ideas?

Olive

I don't have much to work with, so this might be hard. My mom is about to move me into a smaller room and agreed to redo it's design for me. I can't get any new furniture (such as drawers, bedposts, etc..) And I have really old carpet. The furniture I do have, is antique and dark brown wood... Which isn't exactly my taste, but its what I have to work with. I would like to incorporate a beach theme in my room. I like the idea of very vibrant blues, purples, and/or greens that pop out against white and black. Can anyone help me? I'd love to make my room look as modern as possible with the antique-ness of my furniture and carpet.

Answer
Beach themes are great for a bedroom.
When you think of beach you think of two things: Water and sand.
Water can be a beautiful gorgeous blue turquoise (think walls here).
If you can paint a palm tree growing up the wall and perhaps extending the palm fronds onto other walls (or even the ceiling) that would be cool.
Any bright color is acceptable in a beach theme. Yellow (the color of the sun) can be on the ceiling.
To balance out colors you need to have them in more than one place. For example, you'll need something else that's blue in the room (sheets, blanket) although it doesn't have to be the same blue shade. You'll want to pick up the yellow (or whatever other color you like...maybe green) somewhere in the room. When you see the same color repeated it makes things seem more important.
I hope this helps.
I wish you fun.

Halloween Themed Bedroom Ideas?

Tori

Okay so I am redoing my bedroom soonish and I want to do it in like a halloween-fantasy-dungeon-Dark sort of theme and I need some ideas for it. I like pretty much everything that is part of the holiday so please any help would be great.

FYI I am not painting my room black or some dark color like that cause it will be a pain in the butt later. I may though use wallpaper either in black or like a stone dungeon wall kind of thing. (though haven't decided on it yet.)

If you paint, you might want a more neutral color like light gray. That would lend itself to many possible changes in decor. Might want a dark purple comforter, sheets, & throw pillows. As cooler weather comes on, you may want flannel sheets. Knit, crochet, or flannel throws can all be used for curling up with your books.

Dried flower arrangements & baskets would add a very sophisticated & pretty look. Might see a fake bird's nest or bird house along with madrone or manzanita tree branches & fabric blackbirds. Could also frame appropriate quotations from Edgar Allen Poe, nature haiku, or an Alice in Wonderland poster. Can switch the ornaments on the tree branches to match the season of the year.

For the Halloween theme, what comes to mind is the little seated skeleton that I bought last year at Big Lots that's purple with glitter & glass eyes. He holds a little candle holder & looks very similar to a seated yoga pose. Not realizing it was a candle holder, I got it to hold the quarters that I was giving away to trick or treaters. If you get to the stores early in the season, you may find ones that are especially cool. You may see stuffed characters, such as jester, Harlequin, or velour pumpkins, such as the male & female ones that I have. Would also be a hoot if you ever got a good price on a store mannequin or a coat rack to dress & decorate for the season.

Could set up a fake crystal ball on side table or desk. Can sit on the floor, too, & practice readings with Tarot cards. You may want some cushions for this.

May also want an organza canopy on a ring or rods. Might be over the headboard of your bed or surrounding a rattan rocker or comfy velvet side chair used for reading. Look at thrift shops or 2nd hand stores to see what you can find.

May want an old-fashioned floor lamp with Victorian shade with clear glass beads hanging from the shade. You can also use LED lights, either a plain string or the skeleton ones. Note, too, that LED night lights are fairly inexpensive & use less than one watt of electricity.

Whatever you do, build in a provision for switching over to other seasons of the year. Light gray might also combine with yellow, orange, or coral & white for a sunnier look in spring & summer. Can store your velour jack-o-lanterns on a tall closet shelf using a gallon size slide lock bag or a clear plastic bag from the purchase of new pillows or store your Halloween things in a clear orange storage box.

Whatever you do, go with the electrical lighting rather than burning candles near fabric curtains. Read all the warning inserts that come with nightlights & stringed lights about keeping them away from fabric & furniture. Once you've safely mastered all of this, you still may be able to burn incense very carefully when you're nearby or you might use scented essences from a health food store in specially crafted aromatherapy containers. Can also buy dried floral mixtures to make sachets for inside dresser drawers & to give as gifts.
