I lived in El Salvador last year and I miss pupusas! Does anyone know if there are any in Chicago or the northwest suburbs and where they are?

This palce is the best mexican place in town! It's like a souped up taco bell, complete with actually good food! Go here, nowhere else, and you will be happy!

Big Bang for your buck

This place is simple, but the food is absolutely fantastic. The owner is the nicest person in the world and is great when it comes to catering.

The best food here are the yuca, pupusas, Fried plantains, and the Salvadorian salad. You get lot's of bang for your buck at this great southside establishment.

It's especially great if you need a break from typical Mexican or Puerto Rican food.

I love this place because everybody here is down to earth, and it's not an over-commercialized restaurant.

Pros: Pupusa, Yuca, Fried Plantains
Cons: None

Nacional 27

Chicago Tribune review by Phil Vettel: 3 stars

Current/Upcoming Events

The "27" in the name refers to 27 Latin American nations, and this restaurant's cuisine is equally inclusive. Dining at Nacional 27 will satisfy your hunger, quench your thirst and expand your vocabulary, as well, with menu items such as pupusas (stuffed homemade tortillas), chimichurri (cilantro and chili salsa), chayote (an apple-like squash) and boniato (a Cuban sweet potato). Nacional 27's decor is sleek and dramatic, with tubular lighting fixtures, blond wood, an elegant bar and a spacious dining room that doubles as a dance floor on weekends, when a deejay keeps the Latin rhythms coming. Diners can choose from aperitivos, seafood cocktails, empanados, arepas and entrees. Look for geographically specific dishes, such as lemon- and garlic-roasted chicken Cubano and snapper Brasileno, cooked with boniato, coconut and brazil nuts.

Izalco, 1511 W. Lawrence, $9.99 per diner (report submitted 3/11/02 by Claire Dolinar)

A good way to sample Salvadoran cuisine is to go to Izalco's buffet. (Lunch: $8 adults, $4 kids. Dinner: $10 adults, $8 kids.) The lunch buffet I had featured a number of these Central American specialties, such as enchiladas, fried plantains, and two types of pupusas -- tortillas that looked like pancakes -- made with either rice flour (harina de arroz) or cornmeal (masa). Several hearty, homemade soups were also part of the buffet, including black bean, and a chicken vegetable soup with HUGE hunks of both ingredients. Gringos like me would appreciate if they labeled the buffet items. Expect hearty, working-class fare -- nothing froufrou. It's a slightly friendlier place for vegetarians when there's a buffet, but there are next to no vegetarian options when ordering from the menu.

Salvadorean Pupusas

5 cups masa harina flour
4 cups water, approximately
16-24 ounces canned refried beans
3 cups soft white cheese
light vegetable oil or light olive oil

In a large mixing bowl, gradually stir water into masa harina until dough forms a ball that can be handled.
Into another bowl, empty the refried beans. Place the grated cheese into a separate bowl.
Divide dough into about 25 pieces. Roll each into a ball and flatten between the palms of your hands to about 1/2-inch thick. Put a spoonful of beans and a small handful of cheese into the center of each pupusa. Flatten again with the filling inside.
Heat a heavy, wide-bottomed or flat skillet until hot. Brush with oil and cook pupusas on each side 4-5 minutes until a pale golden-brown. The outside should be firm.

Pupusas (El Salvadorean Tortilla)

4 cups masa harina
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
4 tablespoons shortening (not oil)
1 1/2 cups warm water
1/2 lb muenster cheese (shredded)

Combine dry ingredients.
Cut shortening into dry ingredients with pastry blender.
Add warm water a few drops at a time until dough is manageable.
Knead dough 15-20 times.
Let sit for 10 minutes.
Form dough into balls the size of an egg.
Roll out until 6 inches in diameter.
Add some of the cheese to the top of one tortilla and then add another tortilla on top of that.
Place on hot ungreased griddle .
Cook 2 minutes on each side.
Serve with cabbage and shredded carrots on top, or with sauerkraut or coleslaw or even a tomato sauce would be good. Topped off with shredded cheese.

What are some ideas for the "travel" room theme?
