I have a large family, 8 people total, with 6 of them children under 18. I need as much info as possible, shipping companies, costs, the works - any & all info appreciated. I need to know whether or not it is best/cost affective to ship our things or start new for some. What is the cost of things like refrigerators, stoves. We are totally clueless, and starting from the bottom as far as info is concerned. Trying to do the homework, so whatever you can offer is greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much for all the tips given so far, another question I have is what type of stores (names please) are over there that I can look @ now to price some things, before deciding to sell most stuff and even gauge the cost of replacing what I need to have, the big stuff like beds and dressers, kitchen appliances such as stoves & fridges.
My kids are all currently home schooled, anyone know of a good home school program over there?

I remember moving! Brings back memories. I would recommend just bringing suitcases with clothes and electronics, as these are more expensive in the UAE than back home. There isn't really anything you can't find in the UAE that you couldn't live without back home. There are many home stores, so you can buy all your furniture in the UAE including couches, refrigerators etc. Its a place made for people living temporarily there. I think I only shipped some toys for children and some of my favorite decorations from my old house, and I used Aramex. I can't tell you the cost because it was paid for by the company, but typically you are allowed to fill a certain sized container with as much stuff fits in there, and then you pay by the kilogram. Shipping stuff will be more expensive than buying it, and when you buy it its nice and new. There are 3 big American schools that offer (frankly better) education than schools in the US. In Abu Dhabi there is ACS, in Dubai there is American School of Dubai and Dubai American Academy. I made the mistake of moving without guaranteeing a spot, so the kids were left to do a year at a bad school until a spot at the American school opened up. School is the most important thing to assure is taken care of! Tuition is also very expensive (especially for 6 kids), so make sure the company is either paying for tuition or paying some part of it. You can go to the school website, but I estimate it will be around 25000 dollars per child per year. Very expensive! Housing is also expensive, and to rent a 4 bedroom house will be about 5000 dollars a month. Ask the company what documents you should bring, but bring copies of birth certificates and marriage certificates. I don't know what else to say, enjoy the UAE it will really be an amazing experience for you and for the kids. It really opened our eyes to the rest of the world.
