Can I paint a old Drexel bedroom set?

I just purchased a head/foot board and matching dresser at a consignment shop and I want to paint it to match my bedroom. The paint is wearing off but it's still in pretty good condition. Does anyone know if the company's furniture is worth preserving?

Answer
I "LOVE" consignment shops, yard sales, Goodwill, etc. For years and years (when the kids where young, especially) this was all I could afford. I painted everything. It was worth it to me. I would inspect the piece, determine what repairs it needed, nail, screw, etc. and then paint. In your case since the furniture paint is wearing off visit your local paint store for options. Last time I was at the hardware store to pick up paint samples (2 weeks ago) I saw several different kinds of paint strippers if you want to go that route. The cost of doing the work yourself is much much less then having someone do it for you and you can change your mind as you change you decor. My daughter would change her mind on what her favorite color was every year, so out would come the paint.

As to the value of the pieces you bought, whether it is better to keep them as they are or to refinish them? It depends on when they where made and in what style. Get them valued by an antiques dealer. But for your information the Drexel company was founded in 1903 so the piece is Twentieth Century most likely. Some better made furniture that is pre-1960 are beginning to develop value. Check into this before you do something that can't be reversed.

Can I sell my condo I've owned for a year?

Rebecca

I bought a 1-bedroom condo last summer that is spacious for a single, first-time homeowner. But I'm planning to live with my boyfriend soon - and I am worried that it is too small and naive to think that it will be comfortable.

Does anyone have any advice on selling a condo/home about a year after closing? I haven't done any renovations, though it looks better even with fresh paint and nice decor. Also, I live in an area where home prices haven't dropped even though the market has declined. Thank you.
I do have a great realtor and know the steps I'd need to take to put it on the market. I'm mostly worried about it being a poor business decision, and losing money for selling it so quickly in a tough market.

Answer
How very insightful! You can sell your condo whenever you desire, but your hesitancy makes good sense.

Most likely you chose to buy your condo because it represented as a good investment, included some tax advantages and of course provided you with a comfortable place to live. Rather than throw away these things by selling the condo, I suggest you look into ways you can preserve it. For example see of you can rent it out at a price that pays the mortgage and the monthly maintenance fee (or more). That way you can continue gaining the equity you were throwing away when you were paying rent. If you are unsure of your future relationship rent the condo month to month in case you need to move back in soon. OR if the new guy turns out to be Mr. Right, the condo can serve as an investment to liquidate when it comes time to buy that house big enough for kids too in the more expensive neighborhood with good schools. I say keep it, I can only assume that a quick turn around sale won't allow you any profit (after paying commissions)after only a year (but your Realtor should be explaining this to you upfront). Good Luck!

Whats a good theme for a baby boy?

Mommamonst

The fun part is finally here! I should say "A fun part" I've actually really enjoyed my pregnancy! I had my 20 week ultrasound yesterday and Im so happy to have a boy! Just want some ideas on how to decorate for him. I was thinking a sea theme but Im not in love with that idea. Any suggestions?

Answer
Can't go wrong with a jungle. A baby one with lots of block colours will give him plenty to look at during the day when it's nice and bright. You could have a look at the wall stickers on amazon, they have tons of baby/toddler/kid bedroom decor. You could paint the walls a pale yellow or blue and a big block of green along the bottom of the walls (maybe with some flicks going up to show it's grass) and then stick some trees and jungles animals around.

Something like these (amazon links)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sleeping-Wall-Sticker-children-bedroom/dp/B007HR9VY0/ref=sr_1_6?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1336606542&sr=1-6

Those are just a few examples. There are LOADS more different ones to choose from. I just typed in baby bedroom stickers and these are some of the ones that showed up.
Good luck and I hope I helped

I need some room ideas/themes!!!?

Beach Babe

Ok, so i'm moving and have a new room. I want my room to be like a beach type theme. So any links/pictures would be great.
Next I have a walk-in closet (not connected to my room) I know I want a pink/zebra stripes/princess look for my closet, again any links/pictures would be great!
Third, my bathroom...I think i would like a paris theme for that but feel free to put any ideas up!
And last I also may have a living room/hang out room. What would you do (if you were a teen or already are) for a hang out room. (colors, designs, things to hang up, etc.) Thanks for all the help!!!!

Answer
BEDROOM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For a beach-themed room, paint the walls blue and have white or oak trim. Have a white ceiling (makes the room look bigger and brighter) and tan or beige floors (like sand). Hang fish nets, lighthouses, and other beach pictures on the walls. You can find decorative sea shells and other beach items at craft stores and some furniture stores. If you want, you can get an image wallpaper of a sunset or the ocean. Other ideas are to hang a hammock in your room, set up a tiki bar, get decorative surf boards, etc. Put up a boarder that is beachy. If it were my room, I would have a brigth pink comforter and a pink hibiscus flower boarder because I like the beach and I like pink.

Here are some sample rooms for you:

http://image57.webshots.com/557/0/57/74/2115057740089371159hzCHRV_fs.jpg

CLOSET ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paint the inside of your closet pink and get a stencil to paint zebra stripes on the back wall. Have white trim and a white ceiling to get that princess look and to keep the closet big and bright. You can also buy pink hangers for your clothes (I have them). If there is an outlet in the closet, you can line the ceiling with pink Christmas lights. You could also put down a pink zebra rug.

Here are some pink closets. I'm not sure that they are what you're looking for, but they may help you think of good ideas.

http://www.dominiquesonline.co.za/files/images/Pink%20Bedroom%20Closet.jpg

http://flooringcarpetsrugs.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Pink-Zebra-Rug.jpg

BATHROOM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paint the walls blue and then stencil in a black silouette of the Eiffle tower. Also paint some stars. A Paris-at-night scene would be really awesome. If you google "Eiffle tower bathroom accessories" you should be able to find some neat stuff for your bathroom.

LIVING ROOM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Make sure you have a TV and plenty of room to lounge (lots of chairs). Make the room welcoming and fun, but now tacky (ie: neon paint). I'm sure you'll think of something cool to do here.

How can I redecorate my room if it's already decorated?

Rachel

Hi! I was wondering if there was a way I could add a little more style to my horse themed bedroom. My room is small and I have a queen size bed in the corner.

Answer
becuase the bed is so big and it is really a "BEDROOM"

i think less is best...you got a theme and all decorated...wonderful

now get rid of all the clutter...donate all the toys and games and clothes that you do not use

make a place for everything..

hang all the clothes...clean out the closet and really use that space

the best thing you could do is to get rid of the dresser and place those items in baskets and put them on a low shelf in the closet...

or place the dressser in the closet...

you need less in the room and it needs to be super clean so you can focus on the decor when you enter

i would want to place the bed in the center of the largest wall...head boad at the top of the larger wall

You might have fun with removable wall decals. I was surprised at how fun and easy they were to put up and take down. Not that expensive either. Just search online for "removable wall decals" and you'll find MANY to choose from. I have been painting my walls and really spiffing up my measly 2 bedroom home. Truth be told its kinda a dump.Does anyone have any ideas on some cool, cheap, unique ways to really personalize it. I am fine with painting the walls and stuff. I have a really hippie style and i want to incorporate that in to my home. If you know of any website with hippie ideas of just have some yourself let me know.

Answer
OK, Pick your colors(4)
primary
secondary and
two accents
Determine what wood or metal tone to use.
Like dark wood, white painted wood, or light natural wood
Metal - bronze, stainless shiny or brushed, or gold shiny or brushed.

Shop yard sales, salvation army stores, thrift shops, curbside tosses.

Focus on one area at a time, while considering the collection of stuf you have & don't over decorate because you may well find something later that will fit in that space quite well.

Say one empty corner . . find a chair of sometype, straight chair, box ottomon, upholstered (avoid - bugs) add a small table - could be a crate covered or painted, could be another ottomon, put a 18 inch tile on top they cost a couple of dollars. add decorations you like not too much
Get some Modpodge at walmart or hobby lobby
and colorful napkins & tissue paper. Take cups vases, furniture, picture frames nearly anything can be covered with modpodge to make it funky.
I have some big plastic subway cups that are covered with beautiful napkins that I use for flowers that fit perfect in my decor. The stuff makes it water proof & is FUN to decorate with.
You can coordinate anything.

You can take long pcs of ribbon , tie beads along the way & tie them to a narrow wood or plastic rod
& make a doorway cover or a wall hanging. cover plastic to-go lids with napkin/tissue & modpodge to make discs to make a wall/door hanging.
I could go on & on . . but you get the idea . .

Gather stuff you like and decorate this wall - that corner - this area 10 minute decorating in each space & add as you go along. . . .it works

Suggestions on making a small bedroom appear larger through decorating?

Kalamity_K

I just bought a house that is very small after living in very large homes and Im looking for ideas to make a bedroom that literally fits your bed and a sidetable in it, look bigger. Im 20 yrs old, female, and I love color and unique modern decor!

Answer
Most people say lighter colors, but used wisely, even darker colors can make a room look larger. If there's no crown molding around the ceiling, you might invest in border paper in pattern or colors lighter than the wall color to "raise" the ceiling visually. If, as you say, there's only room for the bed and side table (and I've been there) you might take the headboard off your bed and push into the corner. Cover with pillows and swag sheer fabric (same color as the walls) over the top edge of the bed. You may want to opt for a standing lamp by the bed. I have one that's done in an old metal look with a round glass table area built around the pole of the lamp. It serves the purpose and the glass makes it seem like it isn't taking up space. You could then stack containers (covered in some printed fabric or paper you like) underneath for storage. Mirrors do reflect the image of the room back and will create an illusion of a bigger space. In one bedroom, I purchased mirror panels cut to size from a local glass company and mounted them on both sliding closet doors which in turn put mirror across almost one entire wall. You don't want to make the mistake of putting as many small pieces in here as will fit, it will only make the area look smaller. Basically, choose a color you love for the walls, cover the window in the same color, and keep the bedding in the same color family. Then stick to just one or two prints or a print and a solid color that will coordinate well. You do have wall space to compensate somewhat. Maybe a corner too small for anything else could hold stacking boxes or baskets with lids to hold jewelry, scarves and gloves, makeup, etc. If you organize the space in your closet with maybe a small chest or bookcase (if possible), then your room is all living space and you can use the walls normally covered with furniture for candle sconces, posters or other art pieces. I learned a small room has some advantages in that I finally got rid of a lot of clutter I never used or wore anyway.

How do I decorate a dark green bedroom and lime green bathroom?

Happenstan

I just moved into a new apartment and the walls of the bed room are a nasty dark green. I hate it, but probably can't paint over it.
I also have bright green bathroom tile. Lime green!
I'm not a green person, I like red and purple better. And all my decor tricks are based around those colors! So, I'm at a loss on how to make these rooms look good.
How the heck can I decorate these rooms without making it look like candy or a forest? Picture links appreciated.

Answer
With the dk green you can go two ways white for accent, and a pale yellow, with oranges or rust colors. For the lime green, white, turquoise yellow or grays.

How to build and decorate a 3 bedroom bungalow in as low a budget as possible?

Q. With interior finishing and decor. Thanks to whoever answers.

Answer
Is your front room stuck in the 80's? Does your house beg for a make over? Here are some tips on to save money and still get the look that you've always wanted.
Steps

1. Choose a style that you like (contemporary/modern, country, french country, victorian, etc)
2. Decide on a wall color to fit the whole look of the room. For victorian, a rosy pink, or an off-white, country can be anywhere from blue and yellow, to pink and white.
3. Select furniture. If your furniture already matches your style, then consider yourself lucky. If your furniture looks un-pleasant, purchase some slip covers, they come in all different styles and patterns.
4. Buy cheap rugs and draperies. You can save a lot of money by purchasing solid color rugs and draperies that are in your colors, and places like Wal-Mart carry them.
5. Find artwork. It isn't as expensive as you may think. You can buy from a retail or craft store, or photocopy images from a book, and frame them.
6. Alter the things you already have. A black lamp may not go with a nautical theme, so what do you do? Paint it, using spray paint or textured paints, found in arts and crafts stores. Clocks, coat racks, vases(using glass paint) shelves, bookends, even baskets and furniture can be transformed by paint.

Tips

* Toss some pillows and a blanket on your couch, to give your guests a comfortable feeling when they walk through your door.
* Want to paint a design, but dont have the painting gene? Use stencils and stamps instead.
* Choose lighting in harmony with the mood. Bright for modern and dim for classic.
* Use a higher number of weak light sources instead of a lesser number of strong light sources.

Warnings

* Inappropriate mix of lighting, colour and furniture can make a very costly combination look ugly.

Hope it helps.Good Luck!!

Interior design help awkward loft room?

Lou

I moved into a house 9 months ago and the loft conversion is great but awkward. It has the stairs in the middle of the room very low ceilings on both sides then its high in the middle, it's shape enough to walk around but the stais are in the way. Also there is space at the low part, the kid that used to be there before had a bed there. I need some help, what furniture should I get floor seats? Chairs? Table? Daybed? Desk? How do I arrange it? I truly need a interior designer :(

Answer
I am not a professional interior designer, but I have designed interiors!

Without seeing your space I am guessing at what the size actually is.

Consider using the low sides for storage. Put in inexpensive cabinets that fit from any big-box store (ie: Lowes, Home Depot, etc. or Ikea). Any space that seems useless - isn't. Think "storage" for everything.
http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=attic+bedroom+storage&go=&qs=n&form=QBIR&pq=attic+bedroom+storage&sc=0-1&sp=-1&sk=#a

A cheaper way might be to building bookshelves and use pretty baskets to hold your various items or clothing in.

Since the stairs are in the middle of the room, maybe turn one half into the bed area and the other half into your study/lounge area.

You can purchase low to the floor chairs to give you head room and turn a coffee table into a desk if it's needed.

Storage:

Consider keeping your bed close to the floor to make the whole space look roomier. Like the 3rd photo here:
http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/1789888/list/20-of-the-Coziest-Bedrooms-on-Houzz

Make the bed comfy and put a cozy quilt or blanket on top. Add big pillows for color that can be used for seating when needed. Mount your lamps on the wall to be out of the way. Maybe incorporate at headboard with a shelf at the top, too.

I would consider keeping all your colors light - maybe most white and creams then use pops of color with pillows or miscellaneous items.

Hope this helps a bit and you are inspired. I wish you well!

what's the difference between a trundle bed and a murphy bed?

Q.

Answer
Well, since a picture is worth a thousand words:

TRUNDLE BED: a bed that has a second mattress that slides out from underneath the first one (great for when you're a kid or teen and have a friend sleeping over!). They come in many different styles:

http://www.atlanticframe.com/images/platforms/manhattan_F_lc_mf_trundle.jpg

MURPHY BED: Bed that is stored in the wall. Is great for a family room to quickly turn it into a guest room, without losing all that space on the floor when there are no guests. It's great in a studio appartment too, since it gives you more than one room, sort of...:

http://www.aaacommercialproducts.com/Images/murphy-beds.jpg

You'll see from that last link that not only are murphy beds a cool idea for small spaces (in condos!), but murphy tables, sofa beds, etc., are also making a comeback.

Any Ideas on how to redecorate my room?

girls room decor pink and black

girls room decor pink and black image

Beautful.S

Oh and I'm a 15 year old girl
I'm going to redo my bedroom soon and I can't think of any ideas. My room is 13 ft long and 9 ft wide. Any paint ideas or furniture ideas? I love bright colors but only with a dark color too, I really like having posters and paintings on my walls too. So any ideas?

Thanks so much!

Answer
Well a lick of paint never do the walls any harm. Bright colors look good when contrasting either white or black, so combinations such as red/black or pink/black look really good, although I would ask your parents first to see what they think. Remember that as you get older you may outgrow what you like and dislike so don't go overboard. Posters and paintings look great but too many just look plain tacky. Google some creative ways to display your posters/paintings and get some nice room decor such as candles, pebbles, vases etc. For furniture, it would just have to match the color scheme of your room. Check out some decorating websites.

Happy decorating!

How do I become more girly girl?

Victoria

I have been interested in becoming more feminine in appearance since I was a little girl but have had no close female family members to guide me in my pursuit. I'm looking for advice in clothes, makeup, bedroom decor, etc. I have blue eyes, a cool skin undertone, dark brown hair (I dyed it a ash blonde/strawberry blonde color, but my roots are still dark brown) which is in a pixie cut. I have a hard time determining by body type. I do have a bust, but I also carry some weight in my thighs (not my hips), butt, and stomach. I have a defined waist, so I might be an hourglass, but I'm honestly confused. I know that I'm not pear, athletic, tall, or petite. I am short though, at 5' 1 1/2". I have a round face.
I'm really knowledgeable about skincare, but I have an issue with sticking to the routine.
I usually got up 5 minutes before the bus came in the morning last year. Any recommended time frame to get ready for the day? I'm looking for a minimal commitment morning routine (one of the reasons I have a pixie cut, I had no idea what to do with my long hair). I'm also very committed to my academic work and extracurriculars, and I have a small budget. I work during the summers, but it's minimum wage and a 4 hour shift, and it's likely I'll only be working Sundays if at all during the school year.
I've tried eyeliner a few times and I'm not a fan.
I'm in the process of redoing my room and I've just pained it a turquoise color. I looking into getting a new bedspread sheets. I'm particularly attracted to the purple set at VS Pink, but do I need a duvet AND a comforter? Can't I just get a comforter and everything else or will it look weird without a duvet?
I don't hate the color pink, but I much prefer blue and purple, and I'm not really into the girly stereotype behavior in terms of putting chihuahuas in over sized purses or wearing/owning everything pink or saying "like" every other word or acting snobby and rude.
What kind of stores could I get one time splurge clothes every once in a while (note: do not mention A&F or Hollister, I'm boycotting from that company due to the CEO's and some of his employees comments that I find offensive and promoting stupidity, I have nothing against people who wear A&F clothes)? I like wearing skirts and I also would love to start wearing a dress every once in a while for school (something simple, knee length, either a solid color or polka dots). I like the preppy style of dressing, so I would like to wear knee high socks, button-up shirts and blouses. I have a pair of mid-rise black skinny jeans from Levi's and I love them. I know that low-rise jeans do not look flattering on me and are often uncomfortable to wear, and I'm weary of light washed jeans. I would love to wear acid washed jeans (I also like being retro). What other kinds of jeans (boot cut, straight leg? I don't like flares) could I wear? I've always wanted to get a pair of jeans from AE, so is there any from there that I must get? I had a pair of flats last year and I really loved them. I also wore wedges sometimes and I liked that. I got a pair of moccasin loafers on sale from an outlet Bass and I love those. I want to get a utilitarian purse that still looks cute and carries everything I need throughout the day. What kind of stuff would I need to put in there (floss, gum, sanitizer, wallet, travel sized lotions/mists/deodorant, nail file[I also need help with how you do your own manicure], water bottle)? What kind of school supplies could be updated with girly prints? Binders, folders, notebooks, pens, pencil cases, etc.?
I also want to work out more. I have a good body image, but I want to get into the habit of working out sometime before college so I can stay healthy. I'm going to be doing cheer leading, possibly competitive cheer, and definitely track (I'm a thrower). I live in a place where it's cold, rainy, and overcast for most of the year, so jogging isn't always an option. I just signed up for a month of gym membership and I do like the elliptical, and I'm looking forward to weightlifting again.

Answer
Okay girl lets do this head to toe.
1) wax your eyebrows of you have not yet. Eyebrows frame your face and make a HUGE difference.
2) grow out your hair. Guys like girls with long hair, and short haired girls may be associated with lesbians. You can easily find ways to to your hair easily on YouTube. I recommend stilababe09 and macbarbie07
3) speaking of youtubers, start watching beauty gurus to learn beauty and style tips and keep up with trends
4) curl your lashes and wear mascara. I recommend Maybelline Volume Express (Target, $5)
5) easy eyeshadow that looks good on everyone is to just apply a sparkly champagne color on your eyelid.
6) lips. A simple tinted lip balm will work wonders. I recommend Maybelline babylips (target, $3)
7) foundation is not really necessary, concealer and some powder can work
8) wear perfume or body splashes. Bath and body works has cheap, high quality body splashes
9) for clothes, I would recommend H&M, brandy Melville, forever 21, and topshop. Topshop is especially good for what you seem to be wanting
10) unless you are 20 or over, stop wearing ballet flats unless you can REALLY pull them off. I would recommend strappy sandals, Sperry's, Toms, Minnetonka Moccasins, and pretty colored Nike Free Runs
11) whiten your teeth with crest white strips
12) for hip room decor, check out Urban Outfitters or Target
13) develop a style of your own that people can specifically id you by
14) I would recommend getting a down comforter and a duvet to go over it. This way, you always have a good quality comforter and can just change the duvet when u please. It's also easier for cleaning.
15) when decorating your room, choose one thing to be the focal point of the room and pick decorations and color themes accordingly
16) for jean fits, I would recommend boot cut. Avoid straight legged. AE has good jeans, but they stretch throughout the day. Hollister has the best jeans in my opinion.
17) hobo bags are all the rage with girls. In mine, I keep a Vera Bradley wallet, blotting papers, some makeup, lip balm, hand lotion, a Luna bar, a water bottle, gum, a Pinch Provions Minimergency Kit, etc.
18) I give myself an hour in the morning, but then again my hair goes almost to my waist.
19) for working out, try to find a place to run even if it is a treadmill. Running slims you down everywhere while still building muscle.
20) also try to eat healthier
21) it doesn't matter what school supplies you have.

That's all!!!! Hope this helps!!!! Good luck girly!! Oh and also use emojis when you textðððð

My wife and I (plus 2 kids) are moving to China next year for her job. We live in a 5bd/3ba in Marietta, GA now, but would like to find a nice 3bd/2ba condo style home in Shanghai thats comparable in amenties. I realize space is a premium, but we want something decent without having to travel too far from her job and things to do. We are planning to go as expats, so we have some benefits. Also what are the possibilities of a job for me (I am a manager at Wal-Mart)? How much is furniture average cost (sofas, bedrooms, TVs) and utilities? We were once entertaining the thought of living in downtown Atlanta, but the cost of a decent condo runs a small fortune. Are there any really helpful websites that will help us look at rentals, furniture, travel expenses etc? Try to be as specific as possible so when we do our pre-move trip we will go fully prepared with some personal tips.

Answer
I have lived in China for four years and was in Shanghai at my friend's condo last weekend. I live in Beijing...biz trip. Anyways, the most affluent and most modern apartments you'll find in Pudong, and expect prices to run similar to alot of big cities in the states...my friend has a nice 2 bedroom condo, albeit a little cozy, but well furnished/decorated/modern, with Statuettes, et. all in the courtyard...really nice place actually...they have somewhat of a bargain though and pay 3,500rmb...US 500/months plus utilities...they're about 20 minutes from the famous BUndt/Nanjing lu, etc..(I assume you've done some research?)...anyways, you'll probably be looking at 750-1000 US/month if you're just arriving and have children. Some places are very luxurious, heated floors, etc...
China is changing fast. You'll like Shanghai, it's a happening city...safe, clean, (still building in some areas)...the traffic can be a nuisance...and there's loads of foreign cafes/restaurants in case you feel like a taste of home...
Come to Beijing if you have the chance (airfare and China rail/overnite train are both very developed/modern and cheap) You definitely won't regret it!
What am I a tour guide? Advice? Try to learn the language...just for practical things...and then build from there...makes things much easier and you gain a sense of self worth. Also, coming from N.America, keep in mind while you live here that China is a country of 1.3 billion and it has only been developing for 25 years...although Shanghai is about as modern/cosmopolitan as it comes...the West esp. and some rural areas are still have much work. This is not the West. Have a great experience.
P.S. CLose to Shanghai...Suzhou is a beautiful city only about an hour away, also Wuxi, and Hangzhou, Zhejiang province...

What website and/or store would i go to for sale furniture?

cligrl102

I need sale furniture that's kid proof. Can anyone help?

Answer
With the advent of disposable furniture from famous brands like Ikea and the like, poor quality seems to be accepted as normal. It is not normal, necessary, or environmentally responsible. A properly made bedroom set should last a lifetime. Go to any antique exhibition and you will see sets that are hundreds of years old. Mission furniture, which originated in Great Britain, is still made to last a lifetime. There is wide verity to choose from at www.barnfurnituremart.com
Authentic Mission style furniture also known as Arts and Crafts furniture is a timeless choice. When it is made using the traditional methods that make it, truly authentic it is a bulletproof choice. You will have something that will last and last. Many stores sell Mission Style furniture that is not made in the traditional way using solid oak. Instead, they use what they call solid wood. That is code for particleboard. Baloney IS meat. The Barn Furniture sells Mission furniture built with the traditional methods in a multitude of price ranges
If you plan on only keeping your furniture for 1 to 5 years and treat your furniture with kid gloves Ikea may be a good choice, however, ask anyone that has had Ikea furniture for a while or attempted to move it. It tends to auto destruct upon moving. Those cam lock type assembly hardware just don't like to be moved. What makes it fairly inexpensive is what makes it poor quality. The whole thing is about freight and warehouse space. This should NOT YOUR PROBLEM. In my humble opinion, virtually all assemble yourself furniture is inferior quality mostly made of particleboard filled with formaldehyde.

How can I get a surfer style bedroom?

HollyPolly

I love brands like Fat Face, Billabong, Roxy etc. and the whole surfer look but I was wondering how to get that style in my bedroom? I've only got a tiny bedroom but I'm up for any suggestions - please add photos if you can.

Answer
I would definitely stay away from creating a too cheesy surfer room. For example, I was looking up some pictures for you and there were cheap grass skirts as the bedskirt for the bed and little tiny surfer lamps and stuffed monkeys and dolphins and stuff....cheesy. To make a gooood surfer room, I'd choose a bright color that you like for the walls or maybe two as in the picture provided below. The room below has lime green and orange but if you like other bright colors better, that'd be okay too. When you look for room examples like this, I always just use the picture as a shell and interchange my color preferences, etc. So paint the walls a bright color, I actually like the blue in the second picture provided for the walls. You'll want to keep white in your room too..the molding around the room, in the bedspread, maybe the bed frame, the dresser and anything you can really. Because you have a really bright wall, you need that white to offset it and make it more beachy and light. So chose your bedspread. There are plenty of bedspreads that are actually billabong and roxy beach spreads if you want that. You can also chose a hawaiian print theme, but I feel like that's borderline cheesy as well. If I were you, I would choose a full white bedspread in a light fabric. Choosing a completely white bedspread will also make the room and your bed feel and look bigger. It's really your preference though, as I know some people love the hawaiian print. I love the wicker in the first room provided. And I love how they painted it, but I also just love wicker plain. So if you're tight on cash or you just like the wicker not painted, just keep it like it is. Wicker just reminds me of outdoor furniture you'd have at a beach house though. I'm not sure what color your carpet is or if you have wood floors. It'd be ideal if you had wood flooring and then I'd add a straw beach mat as the rug at the foot of the bed or at the side of the bed, depending on the positioning of the bed. I'd get white lamps like the one in the first bedroom provided, the two inbetween the two beds on the nightstand. Again, I'm not sure how you are on money, but if you can afford it, I'd definitely splurge on a full sized surfboard to put somewhere in your room, behind a wicker chair or in a corner by itself. I'll provide a link to a cheaper board (in the world of surfboards it's considered very cheap.) I'd also get some beach themed decor. I like the word beach spelled out above the bed in the second picture. I also love the wood nightstand in the second bedroom, you can see the top slats of it, but I would paint it white. I was recently at Marshalls and they had extremely nice and sophisticated beach themed decor that could fill up probably two to three rooms. If you have a Marshalls by you, you should take a look there. Also, TJ Maxx. If not though, I'm sure you can find really cute beach stuff online. Even if you went to a craft store and bought a hurricane candle holder, a pillar candle, and sand and/or shells, that would be awesome to put on your nightstand. You could also buy a cheap starfish and shells online too to put around your room. The options are endless!! :) Here are all the links:

Moving to Juneau, Alaska?

Vanessa V

I am a young (23 yr) single university student considering moving to Juneau Alaska if offered a full time medical position in a hospital. I was wondering how realistic it would be to move on my own not having any relatives/friends up there in Alaska? Has anyone done this before? I'd like to hear any personal experiences and advice please :) I thought it might be easier since I don't have any kids or any major things to move, and I am trying to save up a little money to rent a small 1 bedroom place (hopefully they allowing dogs). Thank you!
I forgot to mention that I would be leaving from Florida, so the difference in expenses would be pretty big :/ (and yes I enjoy the cold!) and honestly I'm open to any part of Alaska, just thought I should try my luck with Juneau first :)

Answer
I presume you are trying to get on at Bartlett Regional or SEARHC. If you have only checked one, don't forget to check the other for a job. They are both quite close to each other.

I am not sure where you are coming from, but I guess that is kind of irrelevant.

First, I want to touch on a bit of geography. The hospital/SEARHC is located between downtown Juneau and the area known as "the Valley". There is a neighborhood close to the hospital called Lemon Creek. If you are tight on money and won't have a car, there are apartments and a mobile home park in Lemon Creek. The bus line runs right through there. One direction would be the hospital. the other direction would be Fred Meyers/Wal-Mart where you can get most anything you need.

The distance between downtown and the Valley is about 8 miles. This is a long drive to the locals. Past the Valley is Auke Bay. Across the bridge from downtown is Douglas (in case you hear these name later or you want to google things to get an idea where they are relative to each other).

Unless you are coming from the downtown area of a big city, Juneau is going to be expensive. A gallon of gas there right now is in the $3.90's. A case of soda will put you back about $12. A 1 bedroom apartment will set you back about $1000/month. If you plan on bringing a car, you have to drive to Haines or Skagway and then it will cost you a couple hundred dollars to put the car on the ferry to Juneau. Once you are in Juneau, you need to fly out or hop the ferry again (a good fare between Juneau and Chicago is $650, a typical fare is $800 to 900).

If you were a family member, i would tell you the following:

1. Ditch the dog if you can, at least initially. While I have never tried to rent an apartment there with a dog, I have heard that a lot of places don't want animals. I would try to line someone up who can watch the dog for a few months to a year until you can find a place that will take a dog and return to get the dog, or get yourself established so you can find a place that will take a dog.

2. Almost anything you rent in the downtown Juneau area is going to be "older" if that is an issue for you.

3. Things might be a bit cheaper in Douglas, but most of the stores are on the Juneau side and there is only 1 bridge between the two islands.

4. If you don't have a car, shoot for a place near Lemon Creek as it won't be a terrible bus ride either to work or for groceries

5. Know what to do when you see a bear. Bears are nowhere, everywhere, and anywhere. I've bumped into them right downtown by the highschool. They are a fact of life up there.

6. If you will be in a position where you are dealing with the public in the hospital, remember you are in Alaska. Things don't operate the same there as they do in the lower 48. You have to understand how an Alaskan operates otherwise you will tend to be an unpopular "outsider".

7. Costco is your friend. I can tell you that the prices at Costco in Juneau are pretty darn close to the prices at Costco in Chicago.

8. Take up hiking. The Juneau area as a myriad of trails and you should make it a point to hike them all. You will see a number of beautiful sights.

9. A case of beer can usually get a person to take you fishing on their boat. Juneau from the water offers a whole other level of beauty.

If I were to pick up and move tomorrow to Juneau, how much money would I bring? A 1 bedroom place will run about $1000/mo, so I'd have about $3K for first, last, and deposit. You will need money to get there via plane or car. As I mentioned before, the ferry will run about $200 for you plus the car from Haines or Skagway. Beyond that, i would bring $2K for food and to buy a mattress to put on the floor from Costco. I would recommend having at least $5K plus travel expenses saved up (assuming you have a job lined up).

Home childcare questions?

Sabrina

hello-
I have 16 years experience working in early childhood education and now after all these working at a childcare center I want to operate a small in home childcare / preschool out of my home.

I am not licensed yet but have at least 60 references - I'm thinking of taking just
4 or 5 children -
I want to operate it from like 7:30-5:00
or 5:30.
I'd want to accept children between 3-5.
I also want to accept only full time -
holidays I will extended hours .

Id like to know how much I could charge-?
I'm going to provide a preschool curriculum and snacks / possibly lunch ( but was thinking the kids could bring their own lunches.)
I have three dogs and two cats - but only the golden retriever and poodle would be around the kids all day .

Id like to know is it okay to get toys from like garage sales and online etc?

My home is 1,300 sq ft
and the entire living room and a bedroom will be the childcare area.

My backyard is small but big enough for some playskool play houses etc- there is a park nearby with a huge playground .

how do I set up the rates - like the tuition ?
is there a new " start up enrollment fee?"
I was thinking $160 per child .
Do I get a payment weekly - how do I set up a time for me to take vacation each year , etc?

Also besides some pArents I already know-
where do I find my new enrolles?

Any other info would be helpful?

thanks

Answer
See if your state has set up what is called a Market Rate for childcare. This is the rate Social Services uses. Or contact your local child care resource and referral agency and see if they have information. You can try calling family day care homes in your area and see if they will tell you over the phone but many won't. On Long Island, where I live, the average charge for full time preschoolers is about $250 a week but that varies widely according to neighborhood.

Does anyone know of any good websites or books that can help me with interior decorating?

Q. I am looking to update the look of my livingroom, bedroom and bathroom but I need some ideas to get me started. Do you have any suggestions on websits or books that have lots of pictures and tips that would help?

Answer
Try www.webshots.com. In the search type 'model homes'. There are a bunch of photos there with lots of ideas. It is free.

You can also try www.getdecorating.com. That you need to pay for. I think it is only $35 a year (?)

Good luck.

How should I decorate my boys room?

Q. I have a 8, 3 and 3 month old in the same bedroom. I want to move but the 3 bedroom apt are full and we can't afford a house right now.

Answer
A decorating theme is a great way to begin decorating a room for a child. If you're like most parents, you've probably spent lots of time thinking about decorating your new child's room even before he joined your family. While bunnies are cute and teddy bears are darling, you might want something different for the bedroom or playroom.

There are lots of great themes for boys' rooms. A special theme will provide both the focus and the inspiration for a special one-of-a-kind room and can be adapted as your child grows. Time to get started!

Bug's Life
From bees and ants to frogs and reptiles, creatures of nature often capture a child's attention. Browse theme ideas at Posh Tots including a Bug Off Table and Chair Set, Bug bed linens, and or frog lamp.

Favorite Animals
What boy wouldn't love a room focusing on his favorite pet? Whether it's a dog or cat, bird or snake, using this theme will make your son (and his pet) feel particularly at home. Be sure to put up lots of pictures with your son and his best friend around the room and make sure you have stuffed animals scattered everywhere.

Playhouse / Playtown
This theme will provide a wonderful scheme for decorating your son's room and provide lots of wonderful playtime possibilities as well. A whimsical or the cute playtown chest can be your starting point. Or, do a border in kids designs or paint a mural of a street scene on one or more walls. Name the storefronts for family members ("Katie's Groceries", "Ted's Puppet Theatre", "Todd's Bike Shop", "Anne's Pet Heaven", "Sara's Video Den", or Dennis' Book Nook").

Safari
For a safari look, find wonderful, colorful animal wallpaper borders and fabrics at any wallpaper store. Paint the walls blue, tan, ivory, or any of the colors in your wallpaper border. Make pillows and valances from coordinating leopard-print fabrics, and find some stuffed lions and tigers for the corner. Mount a butterfly net, binoculars, or straw hat on the walls. Use colorful matboard and frame some of your child's artwork to display. Maybe he'll draw some lions!

Rustic Cabin
Most every child loves spending time at camp or in the mountains. And what parent doesn't have happy childhood memories of hiking, boating, fishing, or just enjoying the outdoors. Birdhouses, bears, moose, and fish might show up in wallpaper borders, in fabrics, bedding, and accessories. For a rustic room you might also choose comfy plaid patterns, flannel fabrics, and log or pine beds. Accessories might use forest themes of animals, mountain scenes, or natural materials such as pine cones, leaves, and sticks. Take another cue from camp and use a sturdy trunk to store toys. With a room this nice, who needs a vacation?

Rain Forest
Choose a colorful jungle border, or try a jungle area rug. Soft fabric snakes and colorful stuffed birds or butterfly cutouts can add to the decor. Make pillows of animal or jungle prints and use themed accessories. Grrr!

Race Cars
With car racing, you think black and white checkered flags, and a finish line. Find an area rug with a car track design. A car bed might be fun, or decorate the walls with a car wall appliques. Add some framed calendar photos or posters of race cars, and put up narrow shelving to display car collections. Zoom!

Outer Space
Take a trip to the stars using a space theme. An Apollo bed set, outerspace border, or star-studded rocking chair might be just the items that inspires your child to reach for the stars. Paint reflective planets or stars on the ceiling in arrangements of the constellations.

Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines
If Dad is in the service, you might let your boy feel patriotic with a room painted in camouflage and outfitted with tanks and desert colors.

Sports
From soccer to baseball to football, sports is a theme that spans the generations. To use a baseball theme for example, use a headboard made from bats, hang curtains from bats used as curtain rods, make a baseball lamp, or hang shelving to display gloves, pennants, and trophies. Paint the room in the colors of your son's favorite team. Sports themed rugs, furniture, and beds are another possibility. Create similar looks for other sports, and you'll have a room that is a big "hit" with sports fans. Play ball!

Wild Colors
Go wild by starting with a lively area rug designed in fun colors for a child. Take your cue from the rug for colors and designs for the rest of the room. Use color everywhere! Paint every surface of a bookcase a different color, and do the same with headboard slats, drawer fronts, and chair legs. This is a great way to help your little one learn his colors! Find a fabric to compliment the rug and use it to tie the room together with window valances or floor pillows.

Movie or Cartoon Characters
There's something for everyone in this theme! Whether your son has been captivated by Mickey Mouse, Alladin, Lion King, Toy Story, or Scooby Doo -- you'll probably be able to find bedding, lamps, and other decorative items that use these themes. Towels for the bathroom and toys will be easy to add.

Pirates
The story of Peter Pan can inspire creative parents to design a wonderful room. Boys intrigued by the notion of pirates will love a room using blue ocean themes, ship masts, portholes, netting, treasure boxes, and secret play hideaways.

Knights and Castles
Artistic parents can faux paint castle walls, murals, and blue skies for a truly memorable room. Use the theme of "A Sword in the Stone" or "Camelot" for inspiration. Find another take on this theme offered by for Mercy's Sake in their Galahad collection.

Trains, Planes, and Automobiles
There are lots of colorful choices in bedding, fabrics, and wallpaper that feature transportation themes. Make a train track border around the room, hang airplanes from the ceiling, or go wild with a car-shaped bed.

Cowboy Kids
This is a fun theme where you can let your imagination run wild. Think bandana valances, chaps wall hangings, tin stars, horses, rope borders, and more. The baby dude designs offered by for Mercy's Sake offer some fun possibilities. Or check out OliveKids.com Camp Wilderness or the Wild West theme designs from PoshTots.com for more creative examples of this theme and products to add to your decor.

Dinosaurs
From cute and stylized to realistic and ferocious -- dinosaurs themes are still popular. If you suspect this is a passing phase for your little one, then opt for solid color bedding and walls, using theme elements in borders, sheets, valances, and posters.

How can I fit three girls into a 10' by 11' bedroom?

Q. Ages are: five year old twins, and a 10 year old.

Answer
You can get a trundle bed set... or you can get bunk beds... and then a twin bed for your 10 year old. Obviously there will not be room for much more things. You also need to look into your state regulations on how many kids can be in a room and what age a child is required to have own bedroom.. here no oppisite sex children can share a room after age of 2.... same sex children can share a room until they are 10 years old. parents go to jail for that around here all the time... just look into that in your state to be certain that everything will be followed.

Curtain and Bed set ideas for a Blue walled Bedroom with grey white carpet?

kids bedroom decorating blogs
on Living Room Decorating Ideas - Decor for Living Rooms - Good ...
kids bedroom decorating blogs image

I have a Columbia blue room. On 2 walls there are 2 colors sponged on but very lightly( green and a kind of pale yellow. On the 2 other walls there is the Columbia blue but then there are darker streaks of blue. I did not paint these walls, or choose the colors, but it is not an option to repaint. I am tying to get new curtains and new bed set. For my windows there is a white rim. Do you guys have any ideas for what I could get? I also would appreciate it if you would give me a website or a picture of the room that you found the bed idea in. If not thats okay too, I would like as many ideas as possible:) thank you so much
In a few year we will be getting wood floors, I don't know if this matters but... yea haha:) Thanks again!

Answer
Wow. I'd like to see a photo of that paint job. Whew.

Well, you seem to have a good attitude about it so I commend you for that.

You definitely need to stay away from any kind of pattern in your fabrics. Go with one color and I would imagine the lighter the better, I'd imagine. White or pale yellow might be good.

Or one option might be to EMBRACE THE COLUMBIA BLUE since it is the unifying color in all the walls! Maybe get white curtains and bedspread but go with the columbia blue in all your pillows and accessories with some white accents, too!
http://uglyhousephotos.com/wordpress/?p=25204

These photos may not be your colors, but they show how plain colors are what's needed to tone down the busyness of your sponged painted walls:
http://uglyhousephotos.com/wordpress/?p=9485

Here's an idea that could help cover the busy walls and should be inexpensive. Though the photo shows several busy fabrics in the hoops (or in any shape) on a plain wall - reverse it! If you decide on a specific color then put that in hoops of several sizes to maybe tone down the walls.
http://www.happymundane.com/2007/03/fabric-wall-inspiration/

One idea I might suggest is to pick which 2 wall colors you could easiest live with, then cover the other two walls with something.

Since you cannot paint, how about ceiling to floor and wall to wall curtains? Pick one of the colors from the walls you will keep exposed, or use white, and get plain colored sheets and hang them on the walls. Ikea has great ideas on how to hang curtains but if your budget is really low, just hang them flat with staples or push pins.

http://pinterest.com/pin/57772807690801745/

If your budget is really low, get large sheets of craft paper hung with removable tape as tiles in a brick fashion: http://patterni.net/brick-pattern-tiles/

Or rolls of butcher paper, and use removable tape, staples or push pins to hang. Then, if you want, you could write or draw on your walls, too! http://www.walltowallstencils.com/gallery/fullsize/bettywatsonjohn316.jpg

Another idea is folding screens. Find them at rummage sales and paint them the color of your choice to help hide the 2 walls you want to cover up.

You can go to the dollar stores in your area and look for sheets, rugs, fabric, paper, place mats, anything inexpensively that you can use to hang. Again, I would stick with plain colors but you never know - maybe something might inspire you there and you'll come up we a great idea of your own!

Here are several ideas for you to check out. Notice in the first photo how they worked with the colors in the various patterns. That's the idea - pick UNIFYING colors.

Wall art! Make as big or small as you want!

im 17 and want to start a small side business, any ideas?

Cody Sturm

I am trying to get a small business goin but cant think of anything, it doesnt need to really bring in loads of money, just enough to pay my needs, but will certainly take loads if came to me!

Answer
-Antique refurbishment This is a perfect side business for people who love antiquing. Take worn-out antiques home with you, invest the time and care needed to transform those old items into something amazing, then resell them at a profit.
-Auto detailing Have a meticulous eye for detail and love to get things gleaming clean? Auto detailing is probably a perfect side business for you. In essence, your job is to make cars sparkle inside and out â and many people are quite happy to pay well for this service.
-Babysitting Got lots of evenings free? Like kids? Babysitting may be a great side business for you. Keep an eye on multiple children on Friday and Saturday nights and you can earn some solid income.
-Bed and breakfast Have some extra space in your home? Turn that extra bedroom into a âbed and breakfastâ room. This works particularly well if you have a somewhat older home or live near an area that attracts regular travelers and tourists.
Blogging If you enjoy writing, find a topic youâre passionate about and start a blog on the topic. All you need is a computer, some time, and some energy to consistently write.
Cake decorating Enjoy baking and have a bit of an artistic touch? Learn how to decorate cakes and make them for special events. One of my motherâs old friends does this and makes quite a bit of money on the side.
-Candle making Candle making is a great little craft to learn. You can often easily sell the candles at local shops and also through websites like Etsy.com.
Candy making Homemade candies are easier to make than you think and quite popular. Package them in nice little boxes and sell them through a local gift shop.
-Card making This is another artistic âcraftyâ angle you can follow. Make greeting/birthday cards from scratch using your own photographs, some blank cards, and a healthy dose of artistic flair. Again, you san sell items like these through a local gift shop or at sites like etsy.com.
-Catering If you love to cook, take the âBlondieâ route and start a home catering business. Catering is a business thatâs perfectly designed to reward those who plan well and can often fit perfectly into weekends, lining up wonderfully opposite a normal workweek.
-Childcare service Many states allow people to start up in-home daycares with minimal licensing and paperwork. If you love children and have plenty of time and space at home, this is a perfect business to get into.
-Cleaning services for businesses Many businesses and civic institutions have a need for individuals who will provide cleaning services at a low cost outside of business hours. This is a great side business for those who can put in a few hours late at night or on weekends.
Collectible trading If thereâs a particular type of collectible that you know a great deal about, you can often make good money as a collectible trader, utilizing tools like eBay and opportunities to find those collectibles in the community. I had some success with this myself with both trading cards and video games in the past.
-Computer troubleshooting I had some success with this in the past, though Iâve largely moved away from it now. If you have a knack for fixing computers, this is a good place to start.
Consignment buyer Consignment shops and consignment auctions are often loaded with good deals if you know how to identify them â quite often, you can turn these good deals around and make a nice profit elsewhere. Get started by visiting some consignment shops and critically evaluating the prices on the items there.
-Cookie making Much like candy making, homemade cookies can be a great seller. Bake the cookies, package them well, and resell them through a local gift shop. Often, you can find people in your social network who will buy batches from you for special occasions.
-Dinner preparer I recently met a woman who earned quite a bit of money as a very part-time chef. Once a week, she would go to someoneâs house and prepare a homemade meal for their family, then do all the dishes and cleanup work. This gives the family plenty of together time, while earning the lady some cash in the pocket. If you love to cook, this can be a great opportunity, but you may have to put a lot of work into searching for clients.
