Please no paint! And maybe a DIY, i don't want to spend much money

Answer
I'm looking to decorate a baby nursery and have been looking at all the vinyl wall decor. Etsy has some really cute decals. I've been thinking about making some and putting it in my bedroom even. They are really easy to make, especially if you know someone that has a Cricut machine and even easier if that person has Sure Cuts A Lot 2. This one is my favorite:

You could even make these vinyl photo frames and put your pictures in the middle of them. Super cute:

What are some good games/activities for a 12-year old girl sleepover Birthday Party?

Bapo33

Answer
Instead of the usual party favors I suggest that WalMart has inexpensive kits for making jewelry, memory boxes, room decorations, etc. Having one for each girl should keep them busy for awhile and give them something useful to remember the party by.
Or you could just provide a trunk full of craft items and let them use their imaginations. If you have old costume jewelry they can 'remake' or old hats and lots of lace and beads for trim they should have a blast.
Or flip flops for each girl to turn into cool beach shoes.......
possibilities are unlimited really.

40 girl sleepover ?!?!?

Amber

for my 13h birthday(big time for me)
im throwing a huge sleepover with 40 girls.
i need some advice and ideas to make it awesome

here's what i have so far :
food: home made pizza
chips
soda and other drinks
candy

music: ipod!

decorations : ??

games: karaoke , truth or dare and dance..need more

its in my huge heated basement so room is not an issue
please help me and thank you !!

Answer
games: there is a game I played at my bff's sweet 16 and it is soooo much fun! It's like musical chairs but instead of using chairs you find a partner and everyone makes 2 circles. One partner stands on the inside circle and the other stands on the surrounding outside circle. Music is played and the outside circle walks around the people(standing still) on the inside circle. The goal is to keep your eye on your partner so you can get ot them before the music stops. THEN it gets really fun. When the music stops, the person in charge controlling the music calls out 2 body parts (ei nose, elbow) and you have to get to your partner and put your nose on their elbow, or their elbow on your nose and stay there! It is so funny. And then you call out even harder things like butt, back and foot head-it gets interesting! :)

Does anyone have any unusual Halloween costume ideas?

pebble

I am trying to get started making my kids costumes. I would like something different than the usual witches or princesses. I have five kids and this is what they were last year:
girl 11 (Wendy Witch)
girl 4 (black widow spider)
girl 4 (puppy)
boy 2 (biker boy)
boy who will be 8 mo by Halloween

My husband and I went as Shrek and Fiona

Suggestions for any and all would be appreciated or if you can think of a theme for us. Thank you

Answer
Either myself or one of my friends have gone as the following (We made each costume without spending a lot of money as well)

BARBER POLE --

get white long underwear preferably NOT thermal though it will work. Buy wide red tape and wrap around body arms and legs. Use an OLD pair of shoes and spray paint them gold find and old or buy a plastic childs' construction helment and also spray paint it gold. It is a GREAT costume!

Q-Tip

Again, find long blue underwear or a light blue fitted turtle neck sweater and a pair of matching leggings. Take a pair of panty hose and cut off legs, sew up opening where legs were. Glue cotton balls all over as thickly as possible and place on head. Find an OLD pair of shoes (bedroom shoes work great. Not the slippers though) and glue cotton balls as thickly as possible on these and a
pair of socks. If you like, find some blue face paint and color face, hands and anyother skin that might be showing. (Prize Winner!)

Peter Pan

Not as novel, but somewhat unusual. You can find a McCall's pattern. We used felt for the material. It was very inexpensive and looked very authentic!

Out House

Find a LARGE box. Depending on the size of the person of course. Cut hole for head and arms. Cut out a door. Re-attach the door with hinges made from old leather. Use small nuts and bolts to attach with. On the door cut out a Quarter Moon. Draw or paint entire thing to resemble boards. (Very very easy, also a prize winner!)

There are more but I'm having trouble remembering. If I remember more I will edit and add them.

I hope you can use some of these. They were all so much fun.

Please let me know if you do - how they turn out!!!

Oh YEAH! for the baby, you can find an inexpensive one piece PJ and glue lots and lots and lots of cotton balls to it. He can be a (guess what?) a COTTON BALL OF COURSE!!!! Put another PJ on under though. The fabric paint may be stiff and uncomfortable!! Have so much fun!!!

14 year old girl remodeling her bedroom?! [[pictures included]]?

Q. I am going into high school and i want a change in my room. I love bright colors. Which is what my room is now. I have orange and sea foam green walls which was cool at the time but now it just feels to busy. My room is very small (9'x11') and i have a big twin bed with no storage under it, and wooden antique dresser, a wooden antique desk, a wooden chest under my window covered in blue fuzzy material, and 2 storage units on wheels(3 drawers on top of each other) finally, i have 3 wall shelves and purple carpet.
The only things i cant get rid of are the bed, dresser and the carpet.
I was thinking about painting it brown and blue, but i dont know? and i am kinda on a budget, because i just redid my room last year.

All and any ideas welcome!! Thanks

Answer
You should try using a virtual room designer:
http://www.findanyfloor.com/VirtualRoomDesigner.xhtml
That's the link right there. It's a great online tool to virtually design your room. Change the wall colors, the ceiling colors, trim, the flooring options and more. Try on different options and see what you like and what you don't like. There are bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, living room, and dining room options! Also, on this same site there is an advertisement by Shaw Flooring. You can actually upload your own photo and virtually design your room (for free) before buying anything! its amazing! HAVE FUN! :) Hope this helps!

Ideas for bedroom with black, white, and a little red theme?

Emily-x

I am redecorating my bedroom (my mother has given me a $1000 budget, but she said if I go a bit over it's okay). The room is pretty small, but the closet it really big, and I don't need the closet anyways, so I plan on taking the doors off of it and putting on some kind of sheer curtains and putting my bed in it, with lights and what not of course. The carpet is awful, so I want to change it. I want the color scheme to be black, white, and then a few little splashes of red (a red couch maybe, but if not then red pillows, decor, etc.) What should I change the carpet to? I don't want white, because I don't want to dirty it too much. Or should I put in wood floors? I think the brown wooden floors might look bad with the black in the room.

Thank you!
Also, if you have any other suggestions for decorating, or anything, please share them. Thanks again!

Answer
You could go with a "white color" wood floor and put some red and or black throw rugs around. Keep in mind though, would floors are expensive so you may want to look for a neutral color carpet.

Try Googling "Black and Red bedroom decorating Idea" and look at the images. The darker wood does not look all that bad.

How to do a new york theme bedroom?

Nicolee

Hello :)

just wondering how i could do a new york theme bedroom, preferably cheaper as i dont have much money
can anybody help?
x

Answer
Depending on you specific taste...some great inexpensive decorating ideas would be...paint, pics, and personal touches!
Pick a great paint color that will work for your design taste! A great cheap way to decorate in a theme is to get some photos online or take some yourself...if you live in NY. Print them off in Black and white...and frame em'. This makes great artwork...and looks great in city scapes etc...! You can also paint a skyline mural on a large wall! Don't be intemidated...anyone can paint a mural...you can go as simple as painting rectangular buildings with black squares for windows...to a more elaborate mural...depending on you artistic ability. You can even make em look whimsical by slanting the buildings, etc!!! Another design tip with this theme is to find old movie photos or architecture photos that NY is famous for...and make the space a more personal space for the owner! Remember all of these things will give you a big BANG for a little Buck! Know also...that you do not have to go overboard to get your theme across. Sometimes less is more!

Bedroom Themes?

Q. I want to re-do my bedroom with some stylish new themes and can't really think of any. I want it to be a theme that you can find alot of cool stuff for thats not too expensive.
I was kinda thinking something with movies posters?? cuz i love alot of different movies but im really open to anything!

Answer
As our family has recently moved, I am decorating my new room in an ocean theme. We had taken a trip to California last fall and I fell in love with the ocean (even more so than I had every other time I had been out there.) We drove up the PCH (Pacific Coastal Highway), through Malibu and many other breathtaking places. When we reached our destination, my fondest memories are just of us sitting on the beach watching the waves crash onto shore. That is what I am going to attempt to recreate in my room, but I am still looking for ideas from others who have done this. Most other rooms I've seen have either underwater ocean themes (mostly kids rooms), or they do an ocean themed room with just solid wall colors. I want to create an ocean-like experience on at least one wall. You can usually pick up ocean-like nicknacks at garage sales or thrift stores.
My advice: Pick out a favorite place, whether it's an ocean or in the heart of New York City, and if you have large enough walls, there are usually wall-murals you can buy. (I had one in my old room.) That way when you enter your room, you feel as if you are in your favorite place.

Ideas for kids bedroom and building shelves!!!!?

Christen

We live in a beautiful home only the 2 extra bedrooms aren't very big. I need ideas on how to better store stuff so my sons room is more roomy and better organized. I plan on making a huge wall shelf that goes up high on the wall and painting it navy blue and getting red canvas containers and putting up there to hold some stuff and decorating it with the sports theme and a couple stuffed animals. Its gonna be huge. I'm excited about my project but maybe you got better ideas or more ideas on how to make my sons room amazing. Eye appealing and organized. Thanks for all the help I can get.

Answer
A kid's bedroom should feel safe, comfortable and have a touch of whimsy. Important considerations are the child's age and interests. If your child is a book lover, collector of Beanies, dolls or baseball memorabilia, you can honor these interests by creating a special space in her room. With your guidance, your child and you can make a great decorating team.

Step 1

Have a chat with your toddler. Does he have a favorite superhero or cartoon? A favorite color? Your son will always remember your respect for his opinion, so this is an important first step.

Step 2

Paint the room and a few furniture pieces to match the walls, such as a bedside table and a headboard.

Step 3

Decorate your toddler's room with bright colors of your (and his) choosing. Find some "big kid" furnishings. Toddlers are learning to dress themselves, so find a short dresser with big knobs. Paint them in bright colors. This allows toddlers to easily pull out the drawers and experience choices in the way they dress.

Step 4

Place a group of cubbies on the floor or hang them on the wall at a height that's reachable for your toddler. Paint them in bright colors, and label them in big letters for things like crayons, books, Playdoh, etc. Cubbies are a great way for kids to learn groupings of objects and organizing. If they go to daycare, they can put their daily arts and crafts projects away in their cubbies until you hang them up later.

Step 5

Frame their artwork. Choose a group of colorful, inexpensive frames and put your child's best pieces into them. Hang them where your child can admire them while dozing off to sleep.

Step 6

Purchase a large toy box at an unpainted furniture store. Paint it in colors that suit your child's tastes. You and your child can paint it together, or he might want to put handprints in different colors all over the box.

Step 7

Choose bedding in colors that complement the paint on the walls and other furnishings. Clashing colors and too much busy-ness should be avoided. Even kids need an oasis.

Step 8

Lay out a soft rug near his bed, especially if you have hardwood flooring. It's a nice way for little toes to meet a new day.

Step 9

Make a space for their collections. Bookshelves can store more than books--they're also a good way to showcase memorabilia. Hang pictures of superheroes, cartoon characters and sports figures or place them on shelves.

Step 10

Realize the importance of consulting with your grade-schoolers or preteens before you decorate their bedrooms. Many preteens will love taking more responsibility for a project like this. It allows them to express their individuality and even show off some innate design skills. Encourage and support their good choices, and provide the structure where needed.

Step 11

Find a big, soft chair or a bean bag and put it near a window or in a corner. It's place where a child, no matter what age, can dream, read or listen to music.

For storage:

Step 1

Make More Storage Space in the Closet

Adding additional rods for hanging clothes is a way to make more storage space in the closet.
⢠Take the existing clothes rod and re-install it at the height where dresses, pants, house coat, or other long items will hang just so they are off the ground.
⢠Install an additional rod above the first rod so shirts, skirts, suit jackets and shorter items will hang.
⢠Organize the clothes on each rod by color, season, etc.

Step 2

More Shelves Make More Storage Space

Instead of piling items on top of each other on one shelf, add shelves.
⢠Look in the closet, pantry, kitchen, and bathroom to see if more shelves can be added.
⢠Most existing shelves can be moved up or down a notch to provide the space necessary to hold items properly and provide room for additional shelves.
⢠Take all items off the shelves and organize according to height or how much the item is used.
⢠Start with the lowest possible position and put the most used items on the shelf.
⢠Place the second shelf one â two inches above the items on the lowest shelf and place the next items.
This will create more storage space for linens, clothes, food, cleaning items, etc.

Step 3

Storage Space - Canned Good Container

Make More Storage Space â Use Storage Containers

Storage containers can be plastic totes that stack on top of each other or pre-made units for closets, pantries, or other places in the home.
⢠Look around the home to see where items may be stacked and determine what needs to be stored appropriately to make more space.
⢠Look at a local hardware or retail store to find a storage container to properly store those items. Spice racks, canned good units, stackable closet drawers, DVD/CD storage units, under-the-bed containers for off-season clothes are all items that will create more space.
⢠Place items in the storage container and see how organization creates more space.

Step 4

Walls Make Storage Space

Two or Three Bedroom House when you have kids?

Christine

My husband and I are buying a house, we have a two year old. We would prefer a 3 bdrm but we found a REALLY NICE 2bdrm w/ a HUGE family room addition, its a very nice house. We plan on having another baby in a few years (3-4 yrs) so would the 2bdrm house be silly to buy? To me the extra family room completly makes up for only 2 bdrms since it adds so much space but my husband is worried about reselling it, which we wont be doing for atleast 7 years. The 3bdrms in this area in our price range arent as nice though, they all need a lot more work, the 2bdrm we found is move in ready and almost everything has been replaced and it is a lot more square footage than the 3bdrms around here, also there is a finished basement that has a sleeping area, not technically a bedroom but it looks like one to me.. What would you do?
WOW you guys respond really fast! I appreaciate all the answers so far, they are all great! Thanks!

Answer
I am an investor i never buy 2 bedrooms unless i can practically steal it. I would say get a three bedroom or save a little until you can afford a 3 bedroom because if you buy a 2 bedroom this is whats going to happen. In 5 years when you need a three bedroom you will have to sell your home and take a 6% hit on the deal because of a commission then buy again. No guarantee's in this market it will be easy to sell in 5 years or when that time comes. Get what you need now to take care of your family needs for 10 to 20 years.
I am living in my 3 bedroom I have been here 6 years and even if our family expanded we have space.
I would rather see you roll up your sleeves on a 3 bedroom fixer upper and make it into a nice home and cash in on a fat amount of equity then you buy a nice 2 bedroom and sit on it for 5 years then lose 6% to a commission.
Thinking long term as you have heard i am sure pays off!
Remodeling isn't that expensive if you do it yourself. Weekend warrior projects are good to bring family together and will keep you focused close to home. When its finished you will have a prize for less then the ones around you that were nice to start with. when you remodel just save the kitchen for last its the most expensive room in the house.
I toke me 5 years to get our home done and my wife didn't like the process but she also had no idea I had paid cash for our home in less then 4 years. we got it for 65% of its true worth cause it needed fix ups and was a forclosure.
It is in the best hood in town right across street from a park with over a mile of lake frontage and board walk.
I have been an investor of real estate for 17 years now. I look back at all the dumps I bought and fixed up and think that simple little sentence sums it up. Buy the largest junker in the best neighborhood you can. Then fix it up. When you buy your first home I see a lot of growing families settle for 2 bedrooms only to be stuck selling 5 years later or less.
In addition to losing the 6% commission if you have to buy another home in 5 years you will pay a second set of closing costs. All these extra fees from doing multiple transactions add up. When you stay in one spot you pay down the mortgage and wont have to worry about where interest rates are in 5 years when you sell and make a brand new loan on a 3 bedroom. Get the 3 bedroom now and lock rates in cause they are low. Get a fixed rate mortgage and no buy downs on points. PS: professionals call 3 bedroom homes bread and butter homes cause they are trhe easiest to sell!

What shall i draw on my wall?

Lizzie

Im 13 years old and my room is pink. I have one gold wall that i plan to draw something on and paint. I enjoy art and am good at it so i don't mind a challenge. I wanted to paint a flower but i though it might be too boring. Also, if i do draw something, i'm worried that the colours wont go well with them room. (i have white furniture). I was thinking about drawing flowers on vines, is this a good idea or shall i just forget it?

Thank you :)

Answer
You should NOT forget about it. Paint your wall to express yourself. My son has painted every inch of his room (he's 18 and leaving for college soon, but I think I'll never be able to paint over it!). So your colors are pink and gold and white...sounds pretty. Vines of flowers sound pretty too. Here are some pics that might give you some ideas. Good luck!

What themes have your nurseries been? And what are your favorite themes you have seen?

Jules, E,

For your child/ren, what nursery themes have you done? And what were some of the favorite themes you have seen? We are looking for theme ideas for a fourth child and I feel sorta "tapped out."

Our daughter (oldest) was butterflies with purple and green color scheme.
Our son (middle) was lions with a dark green and tan color scheme.
Our son (youngest right now) has dogs with light blue, tan, and chocolate color scheme.

And I just want to see what others have done and if they have seen any really inspired nurseries :) We have the guest room painted dark teal and bright green (not ugly, just different) and I would love any ideas that might not make us have to repaint :)

Answer
I believe in using neutral colors on walls rather than painting them special for the baby, because they are little for such a short time! There is a lot that can be done with textiles and wall decals.

What I would like to do for my baby is a theme involving local wildlife: deer, owls, etc. A lot of baby decor involves African animals, but I'd rather get my kid interested in animals we can see when we walk in our own woods.

For dark teal and bright green, I think an island/aquatic theme could be fun. I am thinking of palm trees, dolphins, etc. You can probably find some decals in this theme on Etsy.

Teen Girls Bedroom⥠Help!?

CiCi

I am 13 and my parents said i could redo my room this summer. I love zebra print and abercrombie. i was thinking of making my rooom zebra print, abercrombie dark blue, and pink. Do those go good together? And if you have any ideas about furniture or anything post them. Also add pictures, it would help. If you have any other ideas for a teen girls bedroom say those too! there will be a winner! â¥
â¥Also what color should i paint my room?

Answer
I actually have a similar experience. At the time, my craze was for Prada. I even remember spending half of my pay check on a hand bag, just so I can put it in display. But I soon discovered that my collection makes my room look cluttered and disorganized. I eventually grew out of prada, but still had to keep my collection because I didn't want to throw my prada collection in the garbage!

The color scheme is fine, but to make it truly work, I would try going for a Abercrombie dark blue wall, zebra print rug, and pink bedding, curtains, and decors. The colors are very distinct, so try to feature each of them with a different theme.

Finally, learn from my lesson. Trust me, no matter how much you love Abercrombie, if that's all you see when you walk into your own room, you'll soon grow tired of them. If you like, you can try featuring just one Abercrombie scarf, and just go with what looks good with the rest of the room like a cute lamp, flowers, etc.

Hope this helps!

How to fit two adults & three children into a two bedroom comfortably?

Q. We will be buying our first home, its very cute with a nice bit of land that we plan on adding onto once we settle in within the next few years. In the meantime, I need ideas on how to make things work out.

Our kids are 5, 3 and 1 years old. The younger two still sleep with us, and the oldest sleeps next to our bed in a toddler bed.

So for our new house, should we make one room the "bed" room and make the other room solely a "play" room for the kids?

Should we get a bunk bed set? The oldest could sleep on top, and the younger two could share the bottom bunk?

Any ideas are much appreciated, thanks!
To the lady suggesting I should just buy a larger home, that is not the answer to the question I asked. If I had the money I would buy a larger house, but since you're so smart and all maybe you have a great job and can fork over the cash I need for a three bedroom?
Oh and having a 1 yr old in the same room as me is crazy? What planet do you come from?

Answer
I have the answer for that one! I have six kids in a four bedroom house. Get a bunkbed. Make sure it's the single/double kind made of metal. One kid on top and two on the bottom. Kids jump on the bed all the time and break the wood ones in record time. Not to mention you seem to get more "decorations" on a wood bed of the unremovable kind. If you are worried about falling kids get bed rails. You can usually find them in thrift stores really cheap. I would try to find the bunkbed used too. No sense in paying more than you have to. KEEP your bedroom for yourself! Kids don't need a lot of toys but, you do need privacy. Ever had to do acrobatics to keep your kids from having seen something they shouldn't? You KNOW what I'm talking about. Besides walking into your bedroom after a hard day with no private space isn't the most conducive environment for relaxation. Do you have a basement or an attic? It's your house try to make it kid friendly. A little elbow grease and you have a playroom made to order. That's what I did. Keeps the little boogers from trashing the house when it's too cold to toss them outside. They are responsible for cleaning it too. If you don't have this option teach them to clean their room starting now. It'll make your life a lot easier in the long run anyway. I've watched kids for 20 years now and they generally only play with 2-4 toys on a regular basis. Get a toy box, screw some shelves to the wall for a couple of books, and you're ready to go! It is not nesessary to separate the kids until they reach at least seven (I'm fairly sure) of different sexes. you can call a child welfare agency to check. Not everybody can afford a bigger house!

Does she have a chance to get the kids back?

Okay so my husband and I went to emergency court on Feb 4th and got temporary custody of my step kids. At the time they were living in a 2 bedroom trailer. Their 73 year old grandmother had custody of them. All the people that lived there were the 2 kids and mother in one small bedroom that could only hold a set of bunk beds and a dresser. Then the grandmother had her own room and the uncle had a home made bedroom. The grandmother got custody of the kids because the mother was a drug addict and could not take care of them. And before any of you say anything about my husband he could not take them at the time because he was living with his brother and we had just started dating. Well the kids were doing very well in the grandmothers care. They were thriving and loved it there. So now we are married and have a 3 year old girl. So anyway things were getting very bad for the kids there. They were calling me up all the begging for me to come get them. the cops were called allot. My step son was hit in the face by his grandmother. And all in one week the cops were there 4 times and the mother took the kids to 5 different house in one night, on a school night. So my husband and i said that was the last straw and went to court. The judge gave us the kids within 10 min. The grandmother even said she could not do it anymore. Well The kids are doing wonderful here. They love being here and in June we are moving to a bigger place. Well this whole time I have been trying to really work with the mother and the grandmother. The mother is now at the state hospital and is doing very well. She now sees that this is the best place for the kids to be. The grandmother has been acting like she loves the kids being here. She talks to me everyday about it and I try to keep her informed about the kids and let her see them almost everyday for right now. Well I just found out last night that she is going to try to get the kids back when we go into court and I am scared out of my mind. I love these kids so much. I treat them like my own and don't want to see them go back to that. I need to know if she has a chance. My husband and I are more then capable of taking care of them. He works 2 jobs and I am a stay at home mom with all 3 kids. Please help in anyway you can. I just want what is best for these kids. They are my world. Thank you for your help.

Answer
You've got a stable home with a complete family (mum, working dad, kid) going upwards economically and for living arrangements. You are of the right age to raise these kids. The grandmother is alone, will likely not grow old enough to see them through to adulthood. The mother, no doubt, has not even got a place of her own. The grandmother has said before a judge she couldn't do it anymore, and she has got multiple police reports against her. Who do you think will get the kids?

Possibly the stress with the kids brought on Alzheimer with the grandmother. It seems like she was really great till a while ago suddenly she changed.

13 year old girl bedroom ideas?

f

I want to redo my bedroom. I am 13, and I want to be an interior designer when I grow up. I want some vintage decorations but we don't have a ton of money, so it can't be too expensive. I want a new dresser, mirror, bookshelf (or just a smaller bookshelf), and wall decor and color. My walls are currently baby blue, and I have ugly green carpet that can't be taken out. Right now everything is navy blue, red or white (it's a nautical seaside theme).
The colors I want to use are
Orange (I like burnt orange, pumpkin, bright orange, or a light orange that's just darker than peach.)
Teal
Off-white
I don't want a girly girl look, I want more of a "vintage" look. So, do you have any ideas? Thank you!

Answer
What type of vintage look are you wanting? Do you want a 50s, 60s, french, cottage, etc.
Check out www.hgtv.com and www.diy.com and do a search for the type of vintage look you want. There are SO many different ideas you will have to choose from for your new bedroom. Just remember, if you see a purple room, imagine it using a teal or orange. Good luck and have lots of fun redoing your room!

Super cute:

Where's all the creative mama's at?! I need idea's for a toddler's beach/nautical themed bedroom.?

Q. My husband and I are redoing our son's room as part of his birthday present.

We have decided that we want to do a beachy/nautical style room. I have looked for bed sets and what not that go with the theme but so far I've not been impressed with any of them. Most of them are too patterned or look too babyish.

We want this room to be able to last him for a few years. Do you have any idea's of decorations or colors or anything at all that you could help me out with? I want it to be cute and kid-appropriate but still nice...

Any suggestions or idea's would be greatly appreciated!
Great answers guys! I've gotten idea's from everyone! It's going to be hard to pick BA.. Thanks everyone!

Answer
I've seen this one before and it's pretty cute.

ALSO:
â¢Lighthouses and sailboats are de rigueur in nautical design, of course, and you can incorporate them into your bedroom in lots of different ways. Look for paintings of lighthouses and sailboats, or look for old photos (or take your own) of lighthouses and boats that you can frame and hang on the walls. You can find a plethora of model lighthouses and sailboats in just about any home décor store; start a collection and display them in the room. If your bedroom is large enough, sailor flags make a nice addition as well. A ship in a bottle is also an excellent touch.

â¢Another option for wall art is framed sailing maps. You can find antiqued maps that trace the routes of the explorers, or you can use modern maps as well.

â¢Anchors and oars, like lighthouses and boats, are common nautical motifs. Look for pillows or bedding that incorporate these images. If you have enough space, a rough hewn oar makes an eye catching wall piece.

â¢Port hole style mirrors for your walls will give your room that âat-seaâ feeling.

â¢Last but not least, donât forget the accessories. From your lighthouse collection to seashell collections, sea grass plants, driftwood, and sand dollars, you can bring anything that reminds you of nautical adventures into your bedroom. Also, use your accessories to bring in those bold nautical colors. Pillows, blankets and throw rugs add red and navy to your room without overdoing it. Remember, nautical style is casual and all about adventure; donât be afraid to experiment a little until you have your perfect nautical paradise

What kind of ideas do you have as far as DECORATIONS for Gilligan's Island Themed Party? All ideas welcome!!?

light head

I am the host, and just came up with the idea right now. I thought it would be more fun than a traditional "luau" styled party.

What kind of funny ideas do you have that are very creative? Thanks! This party will be for my 26 year old grandaughter's birthday where friends and family will invited. Kids will also be there, and for them we have rented a HUGE inflatable professional slide

but what about the decorations besides the obvious, coconuts, leighs, and grass skirts?

Thanks
-Old granny bruiser

Answer
Bamboo - placemats, shades, room dividers; fresh bamboo - short for table centerpieces, long bamboo in bunches to place in corners to give "tropical island" feel

Other cut stems/plants for table arrangements and decorations - ginger, orchids, protea; dieffenbachia, philodendron, palm, banana leaves

Hawaiian print cloth - table cloth, napkins, curtains, skirts, shirts

Other decor/food - pineapples, bananas, mangoes, papaya; little umbrellas for drinks; seashells; nautical/ship decor or items; fishing net; colorful painted wooden fish, birds, turtles etc.

Bedroom ideas for 3 boys?

J

My three sons are going to be sharing one bedroom. They are aged 6 1/2, 4 and 4. The bedroom that is going to be theirs is pretty large (14-4tf X 12ft) and has a bathroom and a large closet. Does anyone have any ideas on how to organize and arrange the three kids in one room? I would to give them some space away from each other. Any themes are appreciated as well. Thanks!
I'm going to put this question in the parenting section too, in case anyone has ever been in my situation.

Answer
I like the idea of two sets of twin bunk beds, also. In particular, this is better than:

-three separate beds eating all your floor space.
-a double on bottom, twin on top bunk that would sleep all of them now but they can't stay this way for long...how long can two boys sleep together in a double bed?
-a loft-type system that can be dangerous if you don't execute it properly, and expensive if you buy a kit or have it done professionally.
-PLUS you get room for a buddy to sleep over.
-AND you have room for the twins to be at ground level and your older son to be up top like the big boy he is. As they grow up and top bunk is more inconvenient than cool, and anyone can be up there safely, they can rotate the sleeping arrangements.

As for storage spaces, I would say like with the beds, you need to go up where you can. Just don't put things so high that kids can't safely reach and do for themselves. As they get taller and more coordinated you will have more freedom to build up.

I don't know how you feel about individuality and where you draw the lines. I think each kid should definitely be allowed his own things, and personality, of course this is true. But you might consider some things community property to be stored together and shared among them...some of their toys and books and media, more expensive stuff like their TV and game systems and maybe some sports equipment...

One thing I would do if I had three young boys that close in age is extend this principle to socks and maybe even underwear too. I would gather up every one of their current socks and toss them out...and replace them with 50-60 or so pairs of IDENTICAL cheap white socks for them all to share. Keep dirty in the bathroom in a big roughtote or maybe even a kitchen style wastebasket with a swinging lid, labelled boys whites...wash them all together once a week in hot with bleach to keep them sanitary and bright...dump them unfolded into another container for storage of clean. This eliminates the drama of pairing up socks and sorting among people, and the waste if any get ruined or go missing. You might keep another (smaller) collection of identical black dress socks. Clean out and replace everything every year, maybe in the spring when you are spring cleaning and organizing, and when you aren't already saddled with back to school expenses or holiday gifts. This might be a hundred dollars or so expense every year. A small price to pay for such convenience all year. I think you can get at least another five years out of the collective sock arrangement. You might have to abandon the underwear clause a little sooner hahahh.

As for decor, I would go with a larger theme for the room, and each kids personal things...their dresser, their desk, their backpack, can be done in a particular element of that theme to both express themselves and distinguish their stuff. A bit like color coding but a little more descriptive I guess.

Animal themes abound...could do the room in the big theme and each kid decorates their stuff with an animal...you could do farm (duck, goat, horse) pets (dog, cat, hamster) dinosaurs (bronto, stego, pterydactyl) bugs (grasshopper, spider, bee) zoo (zebra, elephant, giraffe) etc. You could do sports...do the room to look like a stadium or locker room or sportscasters studio, or hang jerseys and display sports equipment. Each kid gets a separate team...or same sport, each kid rocks pro-college-their school, or each kid decorates with a different sport. You could do music...album covers or music notes, etc...and each kid gets a different singer or band or rapper, or each kid gets a different instrument. You could do games...decorate with vintage game boards, and get lamps and furniture that resemble game pieces. Each kid could be cards, dominoes, and dice. You could do a cartoon room...each kid decorates with a different cartoon. Or do a Disney room and each kid gets a different character. You could do bright colors and everyone gets a different shape...circles, squares, triangles.

Kids and bedrooms?

Q. Do your kids share a bedroom?
What are their genders?
How many kids do you have?
How old are they?

My kids do share a room.
They are both girls.
I have 2 daughters.
They are 4(5 in Jan.) and 18 mths.

I am planning to seperate them when the oldest turns five, but I want to know what other people do.

"indie/vintage" bedroom decor?

kat

I'm re-doing my room. I want it to have a indie/vintage look. Whats the best colors to use? What color to paint the walls and stuff. (I do want some color, not all white). And for decor, what should I get? My room isn't very big. But I want it to look as good as I can get it.

Answer
The best thing about the look you are going for is you will be able to incorporate a lot of things you already own. Try repainting furniture for a new look. Shop in antique stores for the vintage flair you are going for. Picking up vintage frames at an antique store is a great way to frame pictures and art work you already own. Repainting furniture in bold accent colors will give your vintage furniture an indie look. I would consider painting an accent wall at the head of the bed, and keeping all other walls neutral because your indie influences will bring bright pops of color to the room. Consider patterned curtains and bold pillows and keeping your main comforter color solid, as to not over power the small room. An interesting light fixture will also add lots of interest to your room. Shop for new lamp shades for your existing lamps to keep the cost down. Browse through pictures online to find colors that you really like, that way when shopping you have an idea of what you are looking for.
