What is an easy way to soundproof a wall between 2 bedrooms?

mom_of_ndm

My kids bedrooms share a wall, and it's thin. So the crying baby wakes up her sibling. Here are the restrictions:
- I cannot use egg crates
- I cannot tear down the wall
- There is no attic access to that wall
- I can live with a few holes in the drywall, then patched

I thought I read before somewhere that there is a material/foam that you can use to fill between the studs. The foam is like silly strings, it will expand after dispensed, and fill the stud gaps. Is there a correct name for this? Is it easy to do? Any suggestions?
Note these are baby/toddler rooms, so nothing can be hanging on the wall where the kids can reach.

Answer
You can buy this at Home Depot, but if you put to much it will expand and pop out the nails if you used nails and not screws for the dry wall. It is call insulation foam in a red and orange can. The best way to apply it start at the bottom 14 inches from the floor and make sure you are between the studs with a stud finder. make the hole a little larger than the plastic tube that comes with the foam, use half the can, put duct tape over the hole, 2 hours later move up 14 inches and do the process again until done. 1 can will do 4 foot high by 16 inches, so it can get expensive, the best thing is to tear out the wall and put in rolled insulation, do not put in insulation unless it has the paper backing, this is more work, but in the long run depending on how big the room is, the cans are $$$$

Can anyone give me some inexpensive ideas of how to decorate a "Disney Princess" themed room for twin girls? I would appreciate any ideas, suggestions or input. Please no rude answers. Thanks.

How should I decorate my boys room?

Q. I have a 8, 3 and 3 month old in the same bedroom. I want to move but the 3 bedroom apt are full and we can't afford a house right now.

Answer
A decorating theme is a great way to begin decorating a room for a child. If you're like most parents, you've probably spent lots of time thinking about decorating your new child's room even before he joined your family. While bunnies are cute and teddy bears are darling, you might want something different for the bedroom or playroom.

There are lots of great themes for boys' rooms. A special theme will provide both the focus and the inspiration for a special one-of-a-kind room and can be adapted as your child grows. Time to get started!

Bug's Life
From bees and ants to frogs and reptiles, creatures of nature often capture a child's attention. Browse theme ideas at Posh Tots including a Bug Off Table and Chair Set, Bug bed linens, and or frog lamp.

Favorite Animals
What boy wouldn't love a room focusing on his favorite pet? Whether it's a dog or cat, bird or snake, using this theme will make your son (and his pet) feel particularly at home. Be sure to put up lots of pictures with your son and his best friend around the room and make sure you have stuffed animals scattered everywhere.

Playhouse / Playtown
This theme will provide a wonderful scheme for decorating your son's room and provide lots of wonderful playtime possibilities as well. A whimsical or the cute playtown chest can be your starting point. Or, do a border in kids designs or paint a mural of a street scene on one or more walls. Name the storefronts for family members ("Katie's Groceries", "Ted's Puppet Theatre", "Todd's Bike Shop", "Anne's Pet Heaven", "Sara's Video Den", or Dennis' Book Nook").

Safari
For a safari look, find wonderful, colorful animal wallpaper borders and fabrics at any wallpaper store. Paint the walls blue, tan, ivory, or any of the colors in your wallpaper border. Make pillows and valances from coordinating leopard-print fabrics, and find some stuffed lions and tigers for the corner. Mount a butterfly net, binoculars, or straw hat on the walls. Use colorful matboard and frame some of your child's artwork to display. Maybe he'll draw some lions!

Rustic Cabin
Most every child loves spending time at camp or in the mountains. And what parent doesn't have happy childhood memories of hiking, boating, fishing, or just enjoying the outdoors. Birdhouses, bears, moose, and fish might show up in wallpaper borders, in fabrics, bedding, and accessories. For a rustic room you might also choose comfy plaid patterns, flannel fabrics, and log or pine beds. Accessories might use forest themes of animals, mountain scenes, or natural materials such as pine cones, leaves, and sticks. Take another cue from camp and use a sturdy trunk to store toys. With a room this nice, who needs a vacation?

Rain Forest
Choose a colorful jungle border, or try a jungle area rug. Soft fabric snakes and colorful stuffed birds or butterfly cutouts can add to the decor. Make pillows of animal or jungle prints and use themed accessories. Grrr!

Race Cars
With car racing, you think black and white checkered flags, and a finish line. Find an area rug with a car track design. A car bed might be fun, or decorate the walls with a car wall appliques. Add some framed calendar photos or posters of race cars, and put up narrow shelving to display car collections. Zoom!

Outer Space
Take a trip to the stars using a space theme. An Apollo bed set, outerspace border, or star-studded rocking chair might be just the items that inspires your child to reach for the stars. Paint reflective planets or stars on the ceiling in arrangements of the constellations.

Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines
If Dad is in the service, you might let your boy feel patriotic with a room painted in camouflage and outfitted with tanks and desert colors.

Sports
From soccer to baseball to football, sports is a theme that spans the generations. To use a baseball theme for example, use a headboard made from bats, hang curtains from bats used as curtain rods, make a baseball lamp, or hang shelving to display gloves, pennants, and trophies. Paint the room in the colors of your son's favorite team. Sports themed rugs, furniture, and beds are another possibility. Create similar looks for other sports, and you'll have a room that is a big "hit" with sports fans. Play ball!

Wild Colors
Go wild by starting with a lively area rug designed in fun colors for a child. Take your cue from the rug for colors and designs for the rest of the room. Use color everywhere! Paint every surface of a bookcase a different color, and do the same with headboard slats, drawer fronts, and chair legs. This is a great way to help your little one learn his colors! Find a fabric to compliment the rug and use it to tie the room together with window valances or floor pillows.

Movie or Cartoon Characters
There's something for everyone in this theme! Whether your son has been captivated by Mickey Mouse, Alladin, Lion King, Toy Story, or Scooby Doo -- you'll probably be able to find bedding, lamps, and other decorative items that use these themes. Towels for the bathroom and toys will be easy to add.

Pirates
The story of Peter Pan can inspire creative parents to design a wonderful room. Boys intrigued by the notion of pirates will love a room using blue ocean themes, ship masts, portholes, netting, treasure boxes, and secret play hideaways.

Knights and Castles
Artistic parents can faux paint castle walls, murals, and blue skies for a truly memorable room. Use the theme of "A Sword in the Stone" or "Camelot" for inspiration. Find another take on this theme offered by for Mercy's Sake in their Galahad collection.

Trains, Planes, and Automobiles
There are lots of colorful choices in bedding, fabrics, and wallpaper that feature transportation themes. Make a train track border around the room, hang airplanes from the ceiling, or go wild with a car-shaped bed.

Cowboy Kids
This is a fun theme where you can let your imagination run wild. Think bandana valances, chaps wall hangings, tin stars, horses, rope borders, and more. The baby dude designs offered by for Mercy's Sake offer some fun possibilities. Or check out OliveKids.com Camp Wilderness or the Wild West theme designs from PoshTots.com for more creative examples of this theme and products to add to your decor.

Dinosaurs
From cute and stylized to realistic and ferocious -- dinosaurs themes are still popular. If you suspect this is a passing phase for your little one, then opt for solid color bedding and walls, using theme elements in borders, sheets, valances, and posters.

how to create an africa/tribal themed room?

girls zebra themed bedroom
 on Velkominn nja heimasu okkar.
girls zebra themed bedroom image
Q. i want my room to have a kind of earthy and tribal feel, an example would be cady's bedroom from "mean girls". from the movie i've seen that she has light orange walls, a big wooden bed, a big poster of africa...

any other ideas that i could use? thanks.

Answer
Natural materials like plants, rustic wood furniture, and unbleached fabric are ideal for a safari bedroom theme. Look for silk or real plants such as grasses, palms, succulents, or colorful flowers to make a fresh statement in African style rooms. Choose furniture pieces made of dark, exotic woods with simple, rugged designs. Organic fabrics like linen, cotton, jute, and burlap will add a lot of texture. Animal prints are enormously popular in safari bedroom themes. Striking animal prints can be used in small doses for a subtle effect or used in all over the bedroom for a stronger design statement. Wild animal prints can be found in fabric, wallpaper, bedding, throw pillows, and rugs. Choose from a wide range of safari style patterns and textures including zebra, leopard, jaguar, tiger, giraffe, cheetah, alligator, and ostrich. Get your African-inspired retreat off to the right start with a substantial wooden headboard or bed frame. Add some zest with animal print bedding such as a bed skirt, comforter, pillow shams, or duvet. Top off the bed with a romantic mosquito net in white or ivory for an exotic yet elegant ambiance. Safari style accessories and wall décor will add a lot of charm and interest to a safari bedroom theme. Look for handcrafted African items like tribal masks, wooden sculptures and carvings, shields, pottery, drums, woven tapestries, or baskets. Woven bowls and bamboo accents will also add punch to a safari bedroom theme. Fresh flowers or potted orchids bring in soft color and aroma for a relaxing environment. Dress up rustic wooden or tile floors with safari style rugs made of natural fibers such as sisal, jute, or seagrass.

Ideas on how to turn a basement into a little place for kids?

supermommy

I was thinking on creating different spaces for them. A kitchen/dining room, living room, office, and possibly a bedroom area. I was thinking of dividing the "rooms" with king size sheets, hung in a neat manner. Our basement isn't finished or anything (drywall/paint, etc) but is in good enough shape to have a little fun with it. I don't know if I am allowed to paint or put anything on the floor (except carpet...not tacked down) And ideas, thoughts, tips? It doesn't have to be perfect....my little ones are just happy to have a place to play. Budget is small~creativity is limitless. THANKS!

Answer
A table or old desk for a craft area. Then hang baskets or an old shoe organizer to put craft materials in:glue, paint, brushes, crayons, markers, scissors, glitter, stickers, etc.

Old file cabinet painted a funky color to hold materails like paper and finished projects. you can also hang a clothes line for them to clip paintings on to dry and to display finished works of art!

Maybe in one area, you could put a bunch of thick blankets and floor pillows down for a cozy pallet/nest to nap on.

Not sure how old your kids are or if they are boys/girls, but you could have an area with books, and puzzles, another make believe area with dress up stuff and "props" (umbrella, old high heels, old halloween wigs, feather boa, purses)... I loved to play "kitchen" when I was littel. If they have a play kitchen then when you run out of food, save the boxes/jars/containers for them to play "kitchen" with. Any old plastic dishes you don't use anymore... or if they don't have a kitchen, 2 chairs and table will work! A big box or set of shelves can hold the "food".

Lots of mirrors since I doubt the basement has many windows...Let the kids create the art and frame it in an old frame and decorate with those! You can even create with them and hang your work on the wall too!

Tell me about the Disney Port Orleans- Riverside resort?

violet_sel

We'll be at the Disney Port Orleans- Riverside resort in Fall with Dine plan. We have two little ones - 5 and 1 yo. Any advice and tips are welcome. Thanks!

Answer
Well, first off, Port Orleans is close to Downtown Disney. This is a really great area to be in, because you can quickly just get to Downtown Disney to shop or have dinner. All of Disney is central and all of the other parks will be just a few minutes away by bus, but the Downtown Disney area seems to be a little bit more quiet because not as many buses go there as all of the other theme parks, so that should be nice. Port Orleans- both Riverside and French Quarter- is a huge resort. Since it isn't several stories high like other resorts, it is spread out over a large area, so you might want to really take a day to get to know your way around. It is also beautiful- the decor is really pretty and very well thought out to fit the theme. Port Orleans is surrounded by the Sassagoula River which is pretty and serene. The rooms will be your basic hotel room- 2 queen beds, a bathroom, a small sitting area, and maybe a trundle bed, I'm not sure. But there should be plenty of room since your kids are small. Port Orleans has several pools- 6 I believe, and some are bigger than others. Some are large, with a slide, while others are your basic swimming pool. There is also an arcade and a nice playground for children, which should be perfect for your children. There is a lot of info about them and pictures on the first link that I put under sources. There are 3 restaurants; Riverside Mill is a food court, but the food is pretty good and it's quick. Boatwrights Dining Hall is like a typical sit down restaurant with steak and seafood, along with other foods. And the River Roost Lounge is more of an entertainment type restaurant- they serve appetizer type foods and there is a show. As far as transportation, all Disney hotels offer free bus transportation and since this is a large resort, it is very frequent, you shouldn't have to wait long at all. You may have to stand on the buses though. Thats about all I know, but Port Orleans is a great hotel and a great deal. It's beautiful, and although there may be a lot of walking since it is a large resort, its scenery is so worth it. Disney hotels are the best, and you can't get the full 'Disney Experience' without staying in one. Your kids will have a blast, Disney is just so much fun, no matter how old you get. Good Luck on planning your trip, and have a great time!!

I have horrible panneling in my room. I guess I could use wallpaper and not pain. I was thinking maybe and ocean themed room or a night club. If you have any ideas like themes, carpet, wallpaper or furniture suggestion, please help me!!!
Thanks! Hawaian seems so freaking awesome!

Answer
I would love to have a room with ugly paneling in it because then I could paint it. Painted paneling is so charming that you will see lots of furniture ads with painted paneling as the background -- look at how many Pottery Barn pictures have it.

You have great decorating instinct to envision a beach theme with painted paneling. The easiest way to decorate a fabulous looking room is to start with an inspiration picture. Here are some links with several hundred gorgeous decorating pictures. Save the ones you like best to your computer, then you and your mom can narrow it down to your favorite one or two pictures for color scheme and other ideas. Try to imagine yourself in the room you see in the photo. Do you feel too hot in there in summer? Too cold in there in winter? When you're sad does the room cheer you up? Does the room make you feel high energy, or relaxed and sleepy?

It has lots of painted paneling walls, very pretty feminine bedrooms, some cool antique touches, and some darling beach-themed rooms as well. I plan on doing some sonic accessories (like the wall clings) and then just solid blue and yellow sheets/blankets (that I'll mix and match) . I'm also going to turn one or two of his many t-shirts into a pillow case.
Hope it helps.

How to make my room look like Hollister?

Jenny

I'm 17. My mom, step dad, my sister, & me have been living in this new huge house for about 2 years. But my room is reeeeallly small. Like 9x9-12x12. Probably smaller -.- Anyways, I love Hollister & I wanna make my room to look like it. Right now it's purple with silver polka dots. And btw I have 4 doors in my room, so there isn't much space for furniture. How can I make my room look like Hollister?

Answer
Well, purple and silver is a long shot from hollister tones, but we can manage.

Some ideas are

1)Get a wall mural of the beach. heres a few of the links from pottery barn teen (best site ever!!)

http://www.pbteen.com/products/surfboard-stack-wall-mural/quicklook.html?pkey=cwall-murals

http://www.pbteen.com/products/peace-in-the-sand-wall-mural/quicklook.html?pkey=cwall-murals

http://www.pbteen.com/products/surfer-at-jaws-wall-mural/?pkey=cwall-murals

http://www.pbteen.com/products/hammock-wall-mural/?pkey=cwall-murals

2) Get some beachy themed art and decor. Also from pb teen here are a few room accessories that have a beach theme

http://www.pbteen.com/products/recycled-surf/?pkey=e%7Csurf%7C52%7Cbest%7C0%7C2%7C24%7C%7C16&cm_src=PRODUCTSEARCH||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_-NoMerchRules-_-

http://ab.ptimgs.com/ptimgs/ab/images/dp/wcm/201212/0002/img13i.jpg

3) Buy dark brown wood furniture. Hollister furniture is all basically dark wooden stuff, so i'd go down that route. if you want cheaper furniture, try target.

http://ab.ptimgs.com/ptimgs/ab/images/dp/wcm/201229/0008/img30i.jpg

http://img3.targetimg3.com/wcsstore/TargetSAS//img/p/11/08/11080704_138x138.jpg

4) Get some beachy summer songs playing in your room. I reccomend the song LIGHTS cuz they ONLY play that song.

5) get some controllable lightsthat you can dim or brighten. that way, you can keep your room dim, but still lit.

6) Put some fake tan grass across the sides and above your bed for a tiki theme.

7) spray hollister perfume everywhere all the time.

8) get 2 brown leather seats and a dark brown wooden coffee table with a cute rug under it all to replicate the hollister sitting area.

9) hang a surfboard up.

10) get a dress form from pb teen and dress it in hollister clothes like the manichan at the store

http://ab.ptimgs.com/ptimgs/ab/images/dp/wcm/201209/0051/img66i.jpg

11) the more expensive route is to get a contractor litterally REDO your room in the hollister format. the clearance room of hollister could be where your bed is, and the front room where you walk down the steps could be your lounge area. You could have a contractor replicate the outside part of hollister. (so awesome!!!)

12) Collect all of your brown hollister bags and make a collage with them. get new guys or girls every time and then when you have the perfect size, frame it.

13) Get brown paint, and paint the hollister logo as a border for your room. Like across the top of each wall right before the ceiling.

14) Make a sand box in your room, only more mature (wow there is no way to make that sound more mature.) Its kinda crazy, but if you wanna go all out, put a sand box rug in your room. when you first walk in, you can step on the beachy sand.

15) if you're rich enough, get the biggest TV ever and have the channel be a beach themed one.

16) Make a sunglass art. Get all of your sunglasses and pin them to the wall and make the letter of your first name out of the placement of them

17) Pin old hollister flip flops ip and right stuff on them. reccomend getting wjite rubber flip flops. it can be like a writing board for you and friends.

18) Get shelves for your clothes instead of a dresser. Put shelves up in a nice area and fold your hollister clothes on them. You could do all your clothes, but stick to just hollister stuff. Maybe theres an old bookcase or something with drawer thats just lying around. have your dad or someone take the drawer out and rip the sides of so its just a wooden platform. Spray paint it dark brown to look like hollister shelves.

19) get door decor (omg an alliteration. door decor! XD) Drape your door in cool beach towels!

20) Paint your walls the color of hollisters walls.

I want to redecorate my bedroom but i can't seem to think what i want it to be like. What would be some good magazines that would give me ideas and hints about what i can make it like.
{I'd want to make it kinda girly-ish, if that sorta helps =D}

Answer
Domino Magazine is a good one:
http://www.dominomag.com/

Better Homes & Gardens:
http://www.bhg.com/decorating/

BH&G also has many "special interest" magazines that you can find on the newsstands with titles like "Beautiful Bedrooms," "Cottage Style," "Creative Home" and so forth. You should be able to find something from them.

Also "Country Living," "Cottage Living," "Home," "InStyle Home," "Elle Decor," "Budget Decorating," "Martha Stewart Living," etc.

I'm moving into a different bedroom soon and can redo it. The doors and trim are light/medium brown and the carpet is tan. I can paint the walls and get new furniture and stuff and I need to figure out a theme. I wanted to do an all white theme, but would that be weird with the brown and tan doors and carpet? (I can't paint the doors or change to carpet) or is the white theme lame? If so what are some other cool themes or color schemes? Thaaanks!

Answer
The all white bedroom is a great idea. Even with the bit of brown/tan you can still make this room relaxing and calm.
Here is an example :http://www.flickr.com/photos/melissm2007/4391887998/in/photostream/
You can use natural fiber headboard and add pieces like that to your room.

You can use roller shades on your windows in rattan .
Enjoy your new room.

Does anyone have some ideas for a black and white photography bedroom?

I want to redo my bedroom. Im going to be 15. i love photography and black and white pictures but what are some ideas of what else i can add to my new room?

Answer
What color scheme is your room, only black and white? You can add texture in by hanging metal wall art, or some fun modern black and white fabric. If you have someone who can hem fabric for you, you can have strips cut, then hang that on your wall. You can attach it with a staple gun or thumb tacks if you don't have the money for curtain rods.

You can also paint a large square on your wall, then place a picture and shelving in it. Shelving from Target is about $5-7.

I'm not sure what type of decor you like, but I found this great metal piece at Kmart, it's only $20!

What should I do with walls in Master Bedroom when decor is cream and black in the rest of the room?

Mark Nordy

I bought a beautiful comforter set from target that is cream with black Damask print. my carpet is creamish and I just bought a cream couch that I am accenting with all different kinds of black pillows. I have a large bay window to dress as well as my walls and I don't know what to do!!! My bedroom set is cherry. I have also added lamps with cream and black horizontal strips.

Answer
You should paint the walls Lavender. It is warm and it goes well with black and cream. If you paint the walls cream it will be a whipped cream overload hahaha! but black is too dark too paint a room. cherry is red and will be chaotic . so i say lavender. just put in a few light purple Accessories to tie in the wall color to the room and you are good to go! hope this helps!
