I want to paint both my son's bedrooms and I'm undecided which colors would look the best. My oldest son's theme is sports, like a lot of bold colors such as red, blue, white, yellow, and orange. My younger son's room is a dinosaur theme, lime green, cranberry red, and baby blue colors in his comforter. Any suggestions would help, BTW...the color of their walls now are white

Answer
I have been paint my place for a while now. It takes me time to think about it because once it goes up it is up. I have done my living room and bedroom an Arabic sand color. Now I'm trying to work on both of my boys too...also my kitchen. I was debating on keep it neutral beige so if I change the decorations later I wouldn't have to change the paint. Here is a website that may help you. http://home.howstuffworks.com/decorating-kids-rooms3.htm
Also you can check out home depot...they have a computer where you can do sample wall colors in rooms.
Good Luck!

Packing a Uhaul trailer?

kids bedroom sets san diego image

KaniSco

We are making a move from San Diego to Houston. Before we go make the reservation for a trailer I was just wanting to get some opinions on what size we might need? We have no kids, just my husband and myself. One bedroom set Queen with a kind of large long dresser, headboard, foot board, mirror and night stand. Sectional sofa, two tv's one 42 inch and one 50 inch, dining room table that comes apart with stools, about 20 boxes and 5 small end tables. I think with a 6X12 trailer we may be able to fit all that in snug? We also have our car but there won't be too much room with the dog and our essentials.

Answer
Take accurate measurements of as much of your stuff as possible, and then go and discuss this with the (usually) knowledgeable people at Uhaul trailer rentals.

what states were spanish missions built?

f

which states in the us had spanish missions

Answer
.

When the Spanish visited America, they built missions in hopes of spreading Christianity to natives. Today, most of these buildings operate as educational destinations. Spanish missions --- located in most states that border Mexico, with a high concentration in California, New Mexico and Texas --- serve as opportunities to teach children about U.S. history as well as the unique aspects of Spanish culture.

California

There are 21 missions along the coast of California, spaced between one and three hours apart. The first mission, San Diego de Alcalá, opened in 1769, while the most recent, Las Flores Asistencia, was built in 1823. All 21 missions are open to the public, and common features include tours of chapels, bedrooms and gardens. If you choose to travel up the coast, stop at kid-friendly locations such as SeaWorld San Diego, Disneyland in Anaheim and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

New Mexico

New Mexico features more than a dozen missions, including San Felipe, San Ildefonso and San Miguel. New Mexican missions were built between 1650 and 1750. Many are pueblos, or small towns inhabited by Native Americans. Most missions feature annual art or agriculture festivals: The San Felipe mission hosts a public Corn Dance on May 1, while the San Ildefonso mission celebrates with the Animal Dance on January 23. The corn dance celebrates the new harvest and features a ceremony where participants perform sacred dances around a circle. During traditional dances, people often burn old goods such as pots, pans and clothing to make room for new items.

Texas

The 819-acre San Antonio Missions National Historical Park includes San Jose, Espada, Conception, San Juan and the Alamo. The Alamo, the location of the famous battle of the same name, was the first Spanish mission in Texas. The San Jose location served as a cultural center while the San Juan site served as an agriculture and goods supplier. The park offers a Junior Ranger program; children who complete a Junior Ranger activity booklet receive a certificate and badge.

While not well documented, it seems likely that Europeans had visited the eastern shore of North America prior to the voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1492. It was Columbus' discoveries that brought the Americas to the attention of Europe and it was not long before all the major nations of Europe were setting up colonies in the Americas. Spain claimed the most territory including most of the west coast of both continents and parts of the Caribbean. This included what is now the United States South and Southwest. Spain established missions and settlements throughout its holdings for two primary reasons, first, to bring Christianity to the indigenous people, and second, to help strengthen Spain's claim to the territories also coveted by France, Britain, Russia, the United States, and others. The first mission founded in what is now the United States was in Saint Augustine, Florida. Possibly the most well known missions are in California where all 21 of the main missions have ben restored. Less well known are missions from Virginia south to Florida, and from Louisiana west through Arizona to two almost unknown missions on the California side of the Colorado River. The famous Alamo in San Antonio, Texas is one of dozens of missions built in Texas. Missions and churches were also established in Baja California and a chain of missions eventually extended from the southern tip of South America and north into Northern California.

In California, where most of the later missions were founded, secularization occurred in 1834 when Mexico striped the missions of thier property. Elsewhere, secularization occurred much earlier. In Texas, many missions were secularized and became community churches in the course of normal events as the "mission" moved on to a new location, often with a new name. With the secularization of the California missions in 1834, the mission era ended.

Girl and boy sharing bedroom decorating advice?

Sierra L

My two kids. are 7 year olds and will be sharing a room. One a girl and one a boy. What are some cute bedroom sets that will go together well or were meant to be together, that will look great in their room.

Answer
I wouldn't go with a theme, I would make it colorful, like paint the walls and have neutral curtains and light fixtures but I would be sure that they each had a shelf or some kind of storage to call their own that they can have their things on. I would keep the bedspreads the same color but put pillows and little touches that are different on the beds. For example, a red ladybug pillow for her and a red car pillow for him. The ideas are endless in my head right now. I'm sure you'll come up with something great and they'll love it. Take care.

I saw this article about decorating a bedroom in black and white. I'm thinking about doing it but am not sure. This is the article: http://www.roomdecoratingideas.net/black-and-white-bedroom-decorating-ideas.php

What do you think?
<a href=http://www.roomdecoratingideas.net/black-and-white-bedroom-decorating-ideas.php>Black and white decorating ideas</a>

Answer
I agree with Isis. Black-and-white bedrooms can look gorgeous and sophisticated, especially if you bring in another accent colour like fuscia pink or rich purple, plum, or teal. This would also look great with a classic, subtle animal print maybe on the bedding or curtains, if you're that sort of girl! A chandelier or some other time of opulent lighting, a gorgeous, fluffy rug and your room will look spectacular! Have fun!

How can I prove this person on facebook is fake and should I?

Jane

Well if you go on facebook and look up this certain person but i can't give you a link to his account because it's private to strangers. Anyways his pictures are totally fake i can even look them up on google. He took pictures of his house and it was like a purple girl room and it didn't even look like he took the photo. I'll give the link at the bottom of the photo i mean average people don't take photos that good. And his profile pictures are fake too. There like pictures of emo guys and his friends are like "is that you?" And then the faker put "yes it is". I'm not trying to do any harm or anything i just don't like that people are being lied to.

What can you get a guy for Valentines Day?

bedroom decor for guys image

Mo

I just curious.

For a girl it's so easy. You can get her chocolates or a stuffed animal. And you can never go wrong with jewelry.

But what in the world does a guy want for Valentines Day?

Answer
Here are some suggestions:
- cologne
- electric razor
- concert tickets
- DVD's
- video games
- gift certificate (clothing store, best buy, etc)
- bottle of his favorite liquor
- something pertaining to his interests (ex. if he's an artist, give him art supplies, if he's a sports fanatic, buy him a jersey or something)
- books
- watch
- room decor (ex. lava lamp, alarm clock)
- poker gaming set

Top it off with a small box of chocolates. If your looking for something simple, skip the gifts and go straight to the bedroom. Either that or buy him a joke gift (ex. something from Spencer's gifts). You can also wear something cute when you give him his gift (ex. lingerie). Hope I helped =]

Any tips to designing a Chinese theme bedroom?

paola_agui

I'm moving to a new home in 3 weeks or so, and this gives me an opportunity to design my room the way I've always wanted. I've always wanted to go for a Chinese themed bedroom, and I'm looking for any tips on how to start with this new project. So If you have any ideas, feel free to tell... Anything from Wall decor, to floors, to furniture is welcome!

Answer
a traditional chinese themed? or are you looking for an american interpretation of a chinese themed bedroom?

either way...you might want to look in to bamboo materialed/colored things, dark/semi dark wood oriented furniture with oriental design. do not get Bonsai planet, cuz thats japanese. if you're looking into more feminine stuff...try lotus, plum (the flower), and chrysanthemum. for guys...try kirin, dragon (chinese looking ones)...or if you want (tho not necessarily recommended) the chinese horoscope.

chinese people loves the color red, but we use it more on weddings...you might consider that as well. the wall decor, you can look into asian calligraphy styled painting, a fan (hanging)...or perhaps an authentic chinese character sucha as fortune. 2 chairs/stools with a table...small end tables...chinese lantern...ceramic tea set...perhaps incents....all these can be considered as decor :D for windows you can use beads instead of curtains (like the beads yoou hang in the doorway, wooden beads...i hope you know what i'm talking about)

also, google oriental living, or oriental decorating..it'll help. the thing about having a chinese themed bedroom is that you might end up with things that are "oriental themed" but has nothing to do with chinese. you should do a little bit of search just in case :)

I like greens, blues, and dark brown, but not sure where to start? Also, any ideas for window treatments and organizing?? Thanks.

Answer
Hi i think you should go for a cream look paint as you want the other colours to contrast against the green and blues accessories, try getting a nice dark brown curtain and then add balls u kno those shiny ones and mix green and blue together.
however i think what goes with green is a sort of goldy brown and dark brown so y not keep it at that theme instead of adding blue or if u want do blue with brown and i think bluey shades such as teal and turquoise will brightn ur room, also get a rug and basically simple accessories that you like and im sure ur room will come together, gd luck

Any unique fairy theme bedroom decorating ideas for 2 little girls?

shocker83_

We are remodeling our girls' room and they are wanting a fairy theme. We already have the walls painted white with an allover sponge effect done in pink, so I'd like to mainly stick to that color and perhaps incorporate a bit of purple too. I'm looking for some creative ways to decorate using this theme. I am very crafty, so I would love to hear some DIY ideas although any other "thrifty" ideas are great too, since we are also remodeling our boys' bedroom as well and are on a strict budget. Thank you!

Answer
If it isn't too expensive, you can paint the crown molding the lavender or purple to add dimension. You can go to the halloween stores online now while the stuff is cheap or to Lillian Vernon and Oriental Trading Company and find the Fairy Wings that come in Costumes and Hang them above their beds or in the corner of the room.

There is this craft I made with my daughter a few years back of these flower fairies: with wooden beads as heads, pipe cleaner as bodies, and silk flowers as dresses. You can probably google it and find it easy enough but they can be hung up with fishing wire. Very cute.

Also think about painting the ceiling with a bunch of fluffy white clouds or hanging a cute chandelier you can get a garage or estate sale.

Oh yeah! I had one of those bed canopies on my daughters bed for years! Totally forgot about that!

Ok I'm moving to a new apartment and my son is going to finally get his own bedroom. He just turned 4 years old and I have no idea where to look for cheap things to decorate his room. His favorite characters are disney cars and thomas the train..me and my husband are on a budget...and we all know disney cars and thomas are not cheap. so any ideas?

Answer
I would avoid the actual Disney charecter stuff. Not only is it a little expensive, there is a good change he'll complain it is too babyish in two years. Plus, he already had toys with those charecters.

To save money, get stuff you could see in an 8 year old's room.

Bedding I think works for a 4 year old and an older boy:

For wall art, posters make a big impression. I reccomend picking posters that will fit in frames the same color as the furniture. That way later on you can just change the posters.

If the furniture is dark brown in his room, you can get this frame set for $30 http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=16566594&RN=88 You could get these:

How can I decorate my bedroom?

DIYCutie

I'm 16 and want to redecorate my room. Last time was when I was 10. I have brown furniture and pink deep walls, any ideas?
A new comforter and curtains and things of that sort are ok too!

Get a comforter that displays both of those colors so that it pulls your walls and your furniture together. Like this: http://www4.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6E.aspx?deptid=70753&catid=78375&grptyp=ENS&itemid=17de3b6&dep=KIDS+%2b+TEENS&pcat=teens+bedding&cat=quilts+%2b+coverlets&refpagename=X2%252Easpx&refdeptid=70753&refcatid=70753&cmAMS_T=X2&cmAMS_C=MERCHA&cmAMS_V=X2H2&CmCatId=70753

* Obviously not the walls, but the comforter is nice. And you can use the other colors in it for frames on the wall or a carpet.

There's a ton more on Jcpenney.com

Try putting up some pictures or making a picture board ( a corkboard with pictures), or putting a vase of fake flowers.

Or a cute set of mirrors: http://www.target.com/Gem-Wall-Mirror-Set/dp/B003P5FODK/ref=sc_ri_2?ie=UTF8&node=672161011

How to build a house for under $5000?

My mother & I want to get out of the mobile home we are currently living in and build a small house. We will have to build it paycheck to paycheck which will equal roughly $1000 a month towards the new house. We DO NOT want to go solar. We want to use our existing power & plumbing and just set it up with the new house. My grandfather will be able to help with the construction & any setting up needs so we won't need any professionals.

My main question is: do you guys have any advice on how we can build a house for under $5000 and it not be solar? All the plans I find online are about small solar houses with compost toilets & ours will be regular power & plumbing. We need: a full bath, kitchen w/ a laundry closet, living room, bedroom & a loft or a 2nd bedroom. Thanks guys!!!
Also, we live in Alabama in a rural area.
I forgot to mention that we will be clearing the roughly 1/2 acre of land that is behind the current mobile home. It's all trees. We will be doing this ourself because we don't have the money to hire a company. Any advice or tips on doing it ourselves? And is there a way for us to use the trees we cut down to build the new house? How would we strip & treat them? Any & all advice welcome!!

Answer
What about remodeling your current because it will cost to get permits-that is a requirement! And run the electric plumbing lines- which should be run by a professional. Look up "small houses" on the internet. Yahoo just had a great article. Inspiration! I've also seen people use those metal shipping containers- amazing stuff (again permits though-for anything) and saw one college kid who lived in a train- it was wonderful Paid no property taxes as he was on the tracks at a yard.

What are some activities my one year old can do?

I live in a 1 bedroom apartment wanted to know different activities my daughter can do and toys that she can play with instead of watchen tv.

Answer
at 1 she will love exploring the world around her so definitely take her outside as much as possible. She will enjoy playing with real things as much as regular toys so to save space on storage try to use as many everyday things that are safe as you can. She will enjoy sensory experiences the most so think of things that engage her senses.

Dancing to music or making their own music is usually a favorite of toddlers. Turn on a CD and dance around the house with her. If you don't have any kid friendly instruments get out pots, pans, and bowls and give her a large spoon and let her bang away to create her own sounds.

Water play is another favorite - you can set her up in the tub to play with bath toys. My kids favorite is a bag of balls made for a ball pit that we fill the tub with and let them play. You can also give her things like cups and bowls to practice pouring and dumping. If you don't won't to go full out in the tub set her up at the sink with a step stool (if she is standing) and let her fill and dump cups.

Art is messy but fun at this age and is more about the experience than the results. There are washable non-toxic markers and finger paints that are great for little ones to use. The bigger the paper you can give her to draw on the better as she will like to use large sweeping motions.

Stickers is a not so messy art option that most kids love. At first you will have to pull them off for her and help her stick them on the paper but she can help you pat them to make them stick and eventually will figure out how to do it herself.
A game you can play with stickers is to stick one on a body part and name it maybe sing a silly song like " mommy has a sticker on her nose, on her nose, mommy has a sticker on her nose" stick them on her or on yourself then Let her stick them on while you name the part.

There are lots of recipes online for homemade play dough that are great for little ones. She can squish, roll and pound it. Then if she gets bored using just the dough itself you can add utensils like a baby knife to cut with or cups or cookie cutters to make shapes.

Ever since I was young, the life of Marie Antoinette has always intrigued me. After the film Marie Antoinette directed by Sofia Copolla, it became one of my favorite films. I know it's not exactly historically accurate, but the movie is just visually stunning- from the costumes, to the interiors of Versailles, everything was like candy for the eyes. Especially the floral prints, flowers, ribbons, jewels, and pastries.

After seeing this ad for the perfume Miss Dior Cherie, I knew it looked familiar, and I also knew that I really liked the style of it. Here it is:

http://www.la-story.com/upload/2009/03/new_miss_dior_cherie_leau_fragrance_commercial_dir/missdior2balloons.jpg

After the commercial for said perfume was released, I found out that Sofia Copolla directed it. It demonstrates Copolla's love for bright pastels like hot pink, and softer shades like baby blues, mint greens, and light yellows. Pastries and flowers are also present, and so are pretty pastel balloons. Check it out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zWvtx0nijE&feature=related

Anyways, I would really like to decorate my room with bright pastels, and pretty furniture, but I'd like to know some places where I could find Marie Antoinette-esque fabrics (large florals that DON'T look grandma-ish), accesories, and some ideas for what should go into my bedroom. So far I've got this:

-Brass headboard
-White wall shelves ( for books and a couple knick-knacks)
-Poofy white comforter and sheets
-Pine dresser, and nightstand (think I should ask my parents about painting them white?)
-White plastic bins for storage (how can I make them a little less modern-looking?)
-And some other little things that aren't worth listing.

For the walls I'm planning on doing a very soft bluish-green hue sort of like the color on the walls of this scene (NOTE: This is the scene that really made me decide that I wanted to decorate my room like so; so keep that in mind! Also not the floral of the curtians. THAT is the floral that I would like to see in my room.):

http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i31/costumersguide/Marie-Antoinette/ohcapmarie/guitar%20stripe/image002797.jpg

Or I'd like to paint the room in a soft yellow tone, like the color of the dress and flowers (on the hat) worn by the auburn-haired woman closest to the person viewing the photo:

http://www.costumersguide.com/MA/trianon2a.jpg

I'm leaning towards the blue. Your thoughts?

So what I'm asking is for is pictures of and places where I can get colorful Sofia Copolla-inspired accesories and pretty rooms essentials that are reminiscent of what I've showed you. Also, tell me what you think I should do to decorate my room. Thank you! P.S. Links and photos are greatly appreciated!

How should I decorate my room?

qusWIZZ

Hellooo,
I am decorating my room soon but I don't know how to decorate it.

I want it to reflect me as a person, I am a teenage girl, sensitive, quirky, musical, fashionable :D

These are some theme ideas that I had, there are also some links to give you an idea of what style I'm thinking:

* musical - I'm into guitar and stuff so I thought maybe I could make it musical

*Textily/querky - don't how to explain so here are some pics for ideas-

* or this, I dont know a name, I just think this stuff is cute

Any ideas, on making these work, or any ideas on some new themes??

Answer
Well since your getting older and you want a more modern room go for more vintage furniture, because its more "grown-up" but still can be really cute, fun, and quirky!
Vintage furniture falls under the lines of :
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3011/3054750930_ea1579d559.jpg
(This chair is vintage, but is younge and fun because of the pink. You could change the color if you don't like it)
http://www.thefurniture.com/store/Images/Lea/JMV/bed-met.jpg
(This bed is VERY vintage and mature, but the metal working in the frames makes it more mystical-grownup-princess look for the mature younge woman look you are going for)
http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/3369559/2/istockphoto_3369559-seamless-vintage-wallpaper-pattern.jpg
(This is just a pattern for wallpaper or fabric. Its modern but vintage for a happy medium in your bedroom. If this is too childish, but you like the pattern, go with a plain white wall and have a similar fabric.A black and white themed vintage room and you could add bit of color such as red or pink. OR even blue yellow and orange to make it more modern and young, and plain-out more fun!)
http://s3.amazonaws.com/pixmac-preview/seamless-vintage-wallpaper-pattern.jpg
(This wall paper or fabric is colorful! The fun thing about vintage fabrics is that they don't have to necessarily match. The fabricsis are very fancy-adult looking but if you mix and match fabrics it will give a more teenage fun messy, but not too messy, look)
http://dearada.typepad.com/dear_ada/images/2007/12/29/wp360820e.jpg
(With vintage is you can really make it your own. This is a younger fun vintage fabric or wallpaper. Vintage can have a lot of flowers so you can go with a more traditional flower such as the one below or you can go with a more modern flower such as the one above!)
http://mi9.com/datawallpapers/data/12/1013/1180450790/red-flower-custom-vintage-wallpaper_1024x768.jpg

(You also mentioned you were musical! If you had the budget after you were done remodeling your room maybe adding a piano thatâs nice clean white! Also if you got really into it you could add details into the piano. Or since you are into guitars a couple of white guitar stands!)
http://www.countryliving.com/cm/countryliving/images/Vintage-Vanity-White-Silver-HTOURS1206-de.jpg
(This vanity set is made in mind for the younge adult. Many drowers to put make-up in! Also note the decorations like the plant and lamp which will help you when you do put the final touches on your room!)
http://www.lampdoctor32.com/images/DSCF6751.jpg
(I know this may seem far-fetch but any vintage room is in need of a classic chandelier! It doesn't have to be real, it just all depends on your budget and the size of your room!)
http://www.designpublic.com/content/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/mediallion-mix3.jpg
(This picture is just showing modern decor for a vintage/victorian room. Also take note of the fun colors and wall papers. If you aren't a fan of wall paper than going with any of those colors in paint would work too! Also if you don't like bright colors and would like to "tone-it-down" going with pastel colors would work too!) Blue, purple, yellow, pink, orange,&green

Okay, so it is not an emergency, sorry if the head line was too dramatic, I just did not know how to word it and be short, sweet, and to the point. I am in a sort of confused state of mind right now and I am looking for advice or any helpful suggestions.

First let me set the stage on what is going on...

I am almost 25, and just finished college. I have a good paying job and have made arrangements to move out of my parents' home, where I stayed, saving money while attending school and work. I move into my new place in a little over a month from now. This is not the first time I am moving out, I leased an apartment with my sister for a year when I turned 18. I will be moving out on my own this time and am in the middle of planning and making lists of items I need to buy for my new place. It is in this stage that I have found my problem.

All my life, I have slept in the smallest bedroom of the house. The room I have had since 1997 is 9 feet by 9 feet. The room in the apartment I shared with my sister was 8 feet by 8 feet. I own a twin bed, book shelf, desk, night stand, and a head board. All items were hand-me-downs. There is no real theme/style to my room. I like various things and have tidbits of those interest scattered around the room with no real order. It has been described by friends as a mixture of a little girl's, teenage boy's, and granny's room.

While making shopping lists and plans, I realized I have no idea how to decorate a home. I am moving from a 81 square foot room, with few furnishings and even fewer decor possibilities, into a 1500 square foot town house with no real sense of decor. I understand that decorating a home is a life long process that never stops and is not gained overnight, but I would at least would like an idea of what style I would like and dislike.

I know I could always ask my mother for help decorating, as she redecorates a room in the house once a month and it comes out looking magazine worthy, but I would like to do this one my own, with out her controlling were everything goes and how it looks, it is something I need to learn for myself.

How does one find out what styles to decorate with? Where do you find your inspiration and creativity? Is there a way to have it look stylish with out losing functionality? Any ideas, tips or suggestions that can help me? Any websites that can help as well? Anything else you think would be helpful in my situation?

Thank you for your time reading this, I know it was long, and I really appreciate it.
The place I am moving into has 2 bedrooms, 1 1/2 bathrooms, living room, dining room, den, kitchen, front and back patio section, and a garage. The rooms are big and spacious, the master bedroom alone is 15 feet by 14 feet, two and a half times my old room.

I have also looked on pinterest for decorating ideas but I will usually only like one or two things in a picture and none of them go together, or even be considered the same style.
There is also another thing that concerns me, what if once I buy everything and set it up, I hate it? I noticed that I change my mind and switch comforters out almost monthly. I have a purple/white cheetah/stripe print, a blue/gold sun/moon print, solid grey/black print, solid white down comforter, grey/multi color polka dot print, and a quit with rich colors and a black border. Most of my comforters are reversible and I take advantage of that and change it up a lot. I also have sheets in multiple fabrics and shades/prints.

Hi - You learn so many things through the years in school, but you seldom get education on decorating styles for the home. This short guide from About.com will steer you to quizzes and resources to help you determine your specific favorite decorating style.

Connect to the links here and answer some simple questions. Before you know it, you'll get information on your decorating style, based on your answers. What could be easier? Use these sources as a guide to creating the interior that reflects your personality.

http://interiordec.about.com/od/decorateforbegin/a/a_whatisstyle.htm

Whatâs your interior design style? It can be hard to define. If youâre either country casual or city sleek, the difference is extreme and youâre easier to describe. But what about if you are transitional? And what does that even mean? Your interior design style is a hard thing to define, but having an understanding of your likes and dislikes, and knowing how to describe them, is step one to a successful new design plan. The following is a highly unscientific quiz that helps break down the major style elements in a design plan:

In movies and t.v shows why are the teenagers' room so perfect and matched?

Courtney

In the movies the teenagers' room has a "theme" and everything is matched and looks like a picture from a magasiene! UGH! My room is nothing like that! It's yellow and blue and the walls are covered with marvel and DC comics posters. =]] My room tells a lot about me. =]] but in movies.... the room is so clean and organized! it's only like that if the person has OCD or something! lol

Answer
Each movie room has to tell something about the character without overwhelming the viewer.

An example is, in a comedy a room is messy and will usually have crap laying around to show that the character is identifiable and that life is a comedy,

In a romance a room will be organized and each item is thoroughly thought out by the writers and the actors to enhance the story of the character, just like you would have a plushie from the 3rd grade laying around, the character would have a journal or a stuffed animal they've had forever, with an equal story that doesn't necessarily have to pertain to the movie, just the character.

In a coming of age story its the same. All of it is supposed to tell us something about the character just as your room tells us something of you. Here are some classic examples:
Juno:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3193/2476807598_2158d0541e.jpg?v=0

The 40 year old virgin:
http://www.thecriticalcondition.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/the_40_year_old_virgin_wallpaper9.jpg

Penelope:
http://upload.moldova.org/movie/movies/p/penelope/thumbnails/tn2_penelope_3.jpg

Sometimes the items arent supposed to tell you much so much as set a mood, sort of to tell the viewer this is what this character should convey to you because he or she surrounds himself as such.

If they are perfect and matched its to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye, and for you to catch details easier.

all of this is called characterization, each one of us is a character:

what kind of character are you?

How can I get a surfer style bedroom?

HollyPolly

I love brands like Fat Face, Billabong, Roxy etc. and the whole surfer look but I was wondering how to get that style in my bedroom? I've only got a tiny bedroom but I'm up for any suggestions - please add photos if you can.

Answer
I would definitely stay away from creating a too cheesy surfer room. For example, I was looking up some pictures for you and there were cheap grass skirts as the bedskirt for the bed and little tiny surfer lamps and stuffed monkeys and dolphins and stuff....cheesy. To make a gooood surfer room, I'd choose a bright color that you like for the walls or maybe two as in the picture provided below. The room below has lime green and orange but if you like other bright colors better, that'd be okay too. When you look for room examples like this, I always just use the picture as a shell and interchange my color preferences, etc. So paint the walls a bright color, I actually like the blue in the second picture provided for the walls. You'll want to keep white in your room too..the molding around the room, in the bedspread, maybe the bed frame, the dresser and anything you can really. Because you have a really bright wall, you need that white to offset it and make it more beachy and light. So chose your bedspread. There are plenty of bedspreads that are actually billabong and roxy beach spreads if you want that. You can also chose a hawaiian print theme, but I feel like that's borderline cheesy as well. If I were you, I would choose a full white bedspread in a light fabric. Choosing a completely white bedspread will also make the room and your bed feel and look bigger. It's really your preference though, as I know some people love the hawaiian print. I love the wicker in the first room provided. And I love how they painted it, but I also just love wicker plain. So if you're tight on cash or you just like the wicker not painted, just keep it like it is. Wicker just reminds me of outdoor furniture you'd have at a beach house though. I'm not sure what color your carpet is or if you have wood floors. It'd be ideal if you had wood flooring and then I'd add a straw beach mat as the rug at the foot of the bed or at the side of the bed, depending on the positioning of the bed. I'd get white lamps like the one in the first bedroom provided, the two inbetween the two beds on the nightstand. Again, I'm not sure how you are on money, but if you can afford it, I'd definitely splurge on a full sized surfboard to put somewhere in your room, behind a wicker chair or in a corner by itself. I'll provide a link to a cheaper board (in the world of surfboards it's considered very cheap.) I'd also get some beach themed decor. I like the word beach spelled out above the bed in the second picture. I also love the wood nightstand in the second bedroom, you can see the top slats of it, but I would paint it white. I was recently at Marshalls and they had extremely nice and sophisticated beach themed decor that could fill up probably two to three rooms. If you have a Marshalls by you, you should take a look there. Also, TJ Maxx. If not though, I'm sure you can find really cute beach stuff online. Even if you went to a craft store and bought a hurricane candle holder, a pillar candle, and sand and/or shells, that would be awesome to put on your nightstand. You could also buy a cheap starfish and shells online too to put around your room. The options are endless!! :) Here are all the links:

Get some space ship models and if you go for the star ceiling hang them from the ceiling.

Why not build him a captains chair too?

I moved into a house 9 months ago and the loft conversion is great but awkward. It has the stairs in the middle of the room very low ceilings on both sides then its high in the middle, it's shape enough to walk around but the stais are in the way. Also there is space at the low part, the kid that used to be there before had a bed there. I need some help, what furniture should I get floor seats? Chairs? Table? Daybed? Desk? How do I arrange it? I truly need a interior designer :(

Answer
I am not a professional interior designer, but I have designed interiors!

Without seeing your space I am guessing at what the size actually is.

Consider using the low sides for storage. Put in inexpensive cabinets that fit from any big-box store (ie: Lowes, Home Depot, etc. or Ikea). Any space that seems useless - isn't. Think "storage" for everything.

A cheaper way might be to building bookshelves and use pretty baskets to hold your various items or clothing in.

Since the stairs are in the middle of the room, maybe turn one half into the bed area and the other half into your study/lounge area.

You can purchase low to the floor chairs to give you head room and turn a coffee table into a desk if it's needed.

Consider keeping your bed close to the floor to make the whole space look roomier. Like the 3rd photo here:

Make the bed comfy and put a cozy quilt or blanket on top. Add big pillows for color that can be used for seating when needed. Mount your lamps on the wall to be out of the way. Maybe incorporate at headboard with a shelf at the top, too.

I would consider keeping all your colors light - maybe most white and creams then use pops of color with pillows or miscellaneous items.

Hope this helps a bit and you are inspired. I wish you well!

what color to paint my room?

katie

i am a girl, and in high school.
we are moving soon and i get a new room to decorate myself. :)
one color i know i want is hot pink, but i don't know what else.
so, i need colors that will go good with pink. (:
also, what types of furniture should i have?
the room is going to a lot bigger than my old room and i don't want it to look empty.
any other suggestions for designing a new room would be great! :D
also, where can i get some bedding? not little girl bedding but not adult bedding. teenage/college bedding.

Answer
I like hot pink with light pink, cream and brown. But it can work with lots of colors depending on your bedding and whether you want a calmer bedroom or a lively one. Yellow looks good with hot pink and so does lime green, orange or aqua. Buy comforter first then you can base all your accents...pillows, rugs, lamps, art, candles, etc. on that.
