What colors walls would look good with cream carpet and dark wood for a very large bedroom ?

Q. I have a king sized bed with a mahogany headboard. I'm not great on decor so I really don't know what to do. Any help would be great. And what about bed spreads and curtains? Any suggestions on color schemes for those?

Answer
Your room is so neutral you can do about anything. It's the black dress thing anything goes with black and you can dress it up or down. So you need to find your style.

Mahogany is very traditional let me throw a few ideas at you and see what works. Sometimes the wisest thing to do is get a solid ivory set and then add accents in throws, vases and pillows that you can alter at will.

This has masculine old english undertones with a bit of a modern lean http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=478180&CategoryID=7502

This is very traditional and the Burgundy is a great undertone on the mahogany http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=411086&CategoryID=7502

This is soft and traditional and the green would go nicely in the room earth tones are very soothing bamboo shades and cream terracotta bowls and vases http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=464604&CategoryID=7502&LinkType=

This is sexier and more feminine the sea blue/green is spa like http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=326263&CategoryID=7502&LinkType= Bronze and copper tones as accents with sea glass will play it up nice.

If you can't decide and need a push in one direction go with the ivory set. http://quiltkrazy.com/product?p=641 And your accents to it and change it for the seasons. Go wil a soft taupe on the wall and you can take this anywhere from purple velvet to pale summer daisys.

What type of animal print wall decor should i use?

Lauren

I want to change up my room a little bit so i was thinking about animal print for my bedroom walls. My bedroom walls are light purple and i don't want to repaint my room. So i was wondering what type of animal print would look nice with a light purple wall. I wanted a zebra or cheetah print, but i didn't think it would look nice with light purple.

Answer
zebra on light purple would be sweeeet! Definitely do that!

My bedroom walls are "the hulk" green (hand-me-down room from my brother) and my bed frame is white. I bought two small pink pillows and i don't know what color to buy my comforter or book shelf in. the room is a little tight on space, especially with the size of my bed. i don't want more white furniture and i don't want to overdo it with color. what colors do you suggest? :)

Answer
Chocolate and pink comforter is perfect for your room,
purple/lavender also coordinates with green and pink.

I am moving to California and my mom and I are trying to figure out how to sell stuff on Craig list?

Lenika

We are moving as said above, and it will be a MUCH smaller place. We are living in a 6000 square foot home looking to move into a 2000 square foot home. We need to sell out things on craigslist but do not understand how. What does my mom have to do to sell them. What does she click on to sell furniture, a treadmill, an elliptical, and other items. Thank you so much for your help!

Answer
There are two options she can use for this. The first is to have a garage sale. There is a section called Garage and Moving Sales. She'll need to put the date, the time, and the address. It's a very good idea to list some of the items for sale and the price.

The second thing she can do is to post ads. First, she should set up an email account that will only be used for Craigslist. I recommend hotmail or gmail. This is so that if the email gets spammed, it won't affect her normal email account.

Then, she should look at the categories and combine items that are similar. She should try for no more than about five or six ads. More than that, and she looks spammy. Do not put the exact address in the ad, but have the people replying back ask for the address. This helps identify spam responders.

A good example of an ad to use is below. It explains why you have a lot of things for sale (stores will try to post as By Owner, and they can be spotted by the number of ads!), it gives allergy information, and it includes two street intersections. Smart craigslist users can put those two streets into the search box and find your other four or five ads.

"Living room and bedroom furniture" (your subdivision) (empty price field)

"I am downsizing and selling several pieces of furniture and some other stuff from my house. We do have a cat but the house is smoke-free and the cat doesn't scratch the furniture.
1. Dark brown coffee table with carved legs in great condition. This table is about 2 x 4 feet and very elegant. It has some minor scuffing on the top but is in great condition. It is somewhat french-styled. $45
2. LaZBoy tan fabric recliner. This is in fair condition. No rips, tears, or missing buttons but it has some minor wear and staining. Very, very comfy and no mechanical problems with it. $35
3. Green corduroy loveseat with bronze and wood trim. This is about 5 years old and dusty, it should be vacuumed or cleaned. It does have a tan slipcover I'll be sending with it. It's extremely comfortable but can get hot in warm weather w/out a slipcover. Near-perfect condition other than the dust. $85
4. Twin sized mattress, box springs, and frame. We've kept the mattress in a wrap and it's about 2 years old and in excellent condition. No stains, no bedbugs, etc. The frame is just a little metal one. The mattress is pillowtop. Asking $150 for the entire set.
5. White kid's wooden dresser with colored knobs. This is a small dresser, about 3x3x1 feet, with four drawers, each with a round colored knob. It's got some scratches and dents from my kid using it but it's a cute piece. $10.
6. Small rocking chair with red rose fabric seat. Cute, sturdy, sized for a small adult or large child. $15

We are near the intersection of 1st and Main in Anytown. Please email us to let us know what you are interested in and we'll set up a time for you to come and look. Evenings work best for us. If you want the full list of things we're selling, just ask and I'd be happy to email it to you. Thanks"

Then, use the uploader and add 8 images. If you are selling anything expensive, get a $2 currency testing pen from Office Depot or a similar store to check for fakes. Put the stuff you are selling in one room of the house, and take anything expensive like a nice TV and lock it into another room. Same with anything small and valuable. This is the same stuff you'd do when showing a home; it reduces petty theft and keeps you from being targeted for theft later on.

Get emails back, mark any weird ones as spam/junk, use your new email to set up times to come get stuff. If someone seems demanding, rude, or suspicious, just move on to a different person's response. Good luck!

You can buy some shelves and and a clothes rod and nail them to a flat wall. Once your stuff is put up you can take some of your choice of fabric and hang it from the ceiling around the area. Like a homemade closet. You can add bows or whatever.

Homemade Bedroom Decorations?

Lori

I am almost 15 and I remodeled my room. I moved my loft bed to another location and got a few new vintage peices oif furniture to add to my room that my grandparents gave me. I am also buying my self a leather, white loveseat. I want to decorate the loveseat with some DIY pillows, quilts, etc. I am very artistic, so I love being creative. Any tips or info on other DIY crafts and projects that I can do to my room? Thanks!

Answer
Color coordinate makes it look pretty with whatever you put into the mix. Try some wall hanging or macrame type decor since you have vintage furniture'.

What are some good ideas for decorating my dorm?

kids room decor for cheap
on ... | Kids Room Theme Ideas | Kids Room Decor | Kids Room Paint Theme
kids room decor for cheap image

I've already bought a comforter (light blue, grey, and yellow), so now I really need some ideas for how to decorate the walls. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi! I'm assuming this is going to be your first year at college. I'm just finishing my freshman year (2 more days of finals!) so I'll give your question my personal experience : )

My dorm room is really small. It's 11x14 for 2 people, and that includes these weird doorless closet things that are built into the room. So I've learned through trial and error what fits and what's worth taking up to school!

My dorm doesn't have loft beds. Some dorms do, and you can then save so much space by organizing them like this:

http://www.loftsinc.com/assets/about-standard605d.jpg

So if you can, I would definitely loft your bed.

Since I can't, I bought bed raisers, which raised my bed off the ground about 5 inches. They're awesome, I was able to fit some plastic drawer sets under my bed, which was a huge space saver.

http://media.photobucket.com/image/plastic%20drawers/Ben_Dyer/SANY1079.jpg

I would definitely recommend these. You can put some clothing in them or other random stuff, and when it's time to pack up and go home, just put a strip of duct tape over the drawers and carry it out. My drawers do look kind of bland, so next year I'm planning on putting some nice origami paper in the clear visible drawer part to dress them up a little.

I would also get some throw pillows for your bed. You probably won't have any seating except for your desk chair, so a lot of kids turn their beds into makeshift couches during the day with pillows.

http://www.sentex.net/~mwandel/built/daybed.jpg

Something like this...but not as bland : )

A nice idea is to turn your favorite old t-shirts into pillows. It's a pretty cool idea. You can find cheap pillow forms at a craft or fabric store or department store. If you don't want to cut up your old shirts, you can go to a thrift store or discount store and buy shirts with nice designs, it might be easier to color-coordinate that way.
http://www.allfreecrafts.com/sewing/tshirt-pillow.shtml

As far as walls go, I have some random stuff on mine. Old calendars are nice for small-sized posters. Borders usually has calendars on sale for $1 around February, so you can stock up!
If you want photos on your walls, a couple of my friends have these frames on their walls:

http://www.buzzillions.com/image.dox?R=246292&i=1089684&t=pi&wide=true

They're great because they hold multiple photos of different sizes, and you're not damaging your photos by taping them to your wall. Also, when you're ready to go home, you can just take the frame rather than peeling pictures off your wall.

I also have a French memo board on my wall, which is nice for sticking stuff up in a hurry.

http://niner360.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/006.jpg

You can make your own pretty easily too.

You can also put up flags, calendars, or make a collage in a big poster frame.

That's about all I can think of for now...have fun and good luck in college!

EDIT: Regarding the guy who said the majority of colleges won't let you put stuff on the walls, that's not true. They wouldn't let you cover the walls in fabric (which some people try to do to cover up the bland walls) because it's a fire hazard, and if you covered the entire room in posters they'd say something. But as long as you don't use nails, you should be fine. Also, some schools don't let you hang stuff from the ceiling if you're thinking of chinese lanterns or anything. But with regular decor you'll be fine.

Where's a place where I can find cute teen bedroom decor for a cheap price?

Genevieve

I'm looking for basically everything: bedding, beds, desks, chairs, dressers, accessories, ect. I LOVE all the furniture from PB Teen, but it's all so expensive. I think I might try ebay or amazon or some site like that. Do you know any other good sites?

Answer
I love IKEA for kids bedrooms, but being the time of year that it is and that you are looking for a room for a teen, I would check out Target. With kids going back to school and going to college I've noticed some great deals on bedding sets, with cooresponding organization items. I have bought things on Walmart.com for my sons room as well, I just purchased a nice headboard, dresser and side table from Walmart.com and had it shipped site to store and it cost me around $259 total with tax. They had a matching desk, but I didn't get it because we have an office in our house.

How do I make the room my boyfriend and I share more "manly"?

Alex

My boyfriend and I share a room, and when we first moved in we painted it a teal-ish color that we both picked out. We love the color and it really gives the room more "life" (it was just plain white before), but I've kind of put furniture and stuff in there and he always mentions that the room doesn't feel like his room because of all I've done to it (I like quotes and pictures so I've put up some motivational/love quotes and hung Christmas lights around the room.) How can I make the room more "manly" and feel more like his room too and not just mine?

I love to be crafty so hit me with anything you've got!
Thanks all!

Answer
You can start with the colors. If you guys like the teal color, go with a dark blue and white colors around the room. You can even go a chocolate brown and light cream say in bedsheets/comforter, framing for pictures or wall decor that share the same colors.
Also, keep things neat and clean edges. For some reason, I have noticed men like geometric shapes. As well for bold thick lines.
I gave some photos below for ideas.

Answer
Titanic
In 1996, Brock Lovett (Bill Paxton) and his team of "Treasure Hunters/Grave Robbers" come to the shipwreck of the Titanic, searching for the priceless diamond known as "The Heart of the Ocean. Lovett and his team send a robot submersible into the wreck. The robot goes into a tattered bedroom. Lewis Bodine (Lewis Abernathy), a co-worker and friend of Lovett, uses the mechanical arms of the sub to move over furniture to find a safe, their prize.
They come back onto the surface to a boat where the rest of the crew is celebrating the find of the safe. Brock feels around inside the safe for what he is looking for. He finds paper and a sketchbook, nothing else. Back inside of the boat, Lovett's team is analyzing the papers that were found inside the sketchbook. One in particular is a nude portrait of a woman lying on a couch wearing a necklace. Brock realizes that the necklace is the Heart of the Ocean. He checks the date, April 14, 1912 (signed JD), the day of the Titanic's sinking. He realizes whoever the woman in the picture is must know where the diamond is, but unfortunately has no idea who she is or whether or not she's dead or alive.
Meanwhile, in her quiet home, Rose Calvert (Gloria Stuart) is making pottery as her granddaughter Lizzie (Suzy Amis) casually goes about the house, feeding the dogs. The T.V. is heard in the background. It is on the news station and what catches Rose's attention at first is a line said by someone mentioning the Titanic. It shows Brock Lovett as he discusses what he is doing. Rose gets up and listens in. Brock speaks of the care his experts on the ship are taking with what they found in the wreck. They show the picture of the woman and Rose stares in amazement, nearly speechless. Back on the ship, Lovett is helping to launch the submarine into the water once again when he is interrupted by his comrade, Bobby Buell (Nicholas Cascone). Bobby claims that there is a call waiting for him that he will want to take. Brock reluctantly gets on the phone and speaks to the elderly Rose. The first thing Rose has to say is "I was just wondering if you had found The Heart of the Ocean yet, Mr. Lovett?" and he is hooked instantly. He asks whether or not Rose knows who the woman in the picture is and Rose certainly does; she tells him it is her.
The next thing seen is Rose and Lizzie being shipped by a helicopter over to Lovett's boat. Onboard, Brock is being briefed by Lewis on Rose's background. He believes Rose is nothing but a fake, seeking publicity. He describes how the woman Rose claims to be, Rose Dewitt Bukater, died on the Titanic when she was 17, according to records. He has done a background check on the old woman all the way back to the 1920's when she had worked as an actress. Back then her name had been Rose Dawson, not Dewitt Bukater. She later married a man named Calvert and they moved to Cedar Rapids, where they had kids. Still, Brock believes Rose may be who she says. Rose and Lizzie are then seen coming out of the helicopter with their luggage. Rose and Lizzie get set up in their quarters, arranging Rose's pictures beside the bed. Brock asks Rose if she needs anything and her only desire is to see her drawing. Rose goes into the room where everything recovered from the wreck is and sees the portrait in a tank of clear water and closes her eyes, remembering the day it was sketched. We see the hands of a youthful man sketching the drawing for the first time. We then see his blue eyes look up, wisps of blonde hair in his vision... Rose opens her eyes and comes back to reality.
Lovett goes on explaining the origin of the diamond to Rose, describing its color and the famous rulers who wore it. Rose says it was dreadful and heavy. Brock has tracked down the insurance records. He said a man named Caledon Hockley bought this for his fiancé, Rose Dewitt Bukater--her. He believes the diamond went down with the ship. Lovett then shows Rose some of the things recovered from what had once been her stateroom on the Titanic. She sees a silver mirror and a hair clip with a dragonfly on it that she eyes particularly. Brock asks if she's ready to go back to Titanic. Lewis is showing Rose a computer simulation of the Titanic's sinking, describing it as something you would want to be on very badly. Rose remembers the experience as more horrific and Lovett asks if she'll share the experience with them.
Rose stands and sees pictures of two double doors from the wreck, it's ornate wrought-iron window design still intact. She suddenly remembers a time when two men stood there, happy to greet her inside. She begins crying a bit and, thinking she is traumatized by these images, Lizzie suggests that she rest for a while. Rose refuses, and says its been eighty-four long years...but remembers the new ship so well. She begins telling her story: The year is 1912 and the Titanic is seen docked at Southampton, England, roughly ten minutes before its maiden voyage. The world is lively and amaz

i have tons of cloths mostly band shirts and hoodies and cloths ive had for years

i collect stuff of my fave bands and dont use like it but i cant get rid of it =\

+ i have lots more stuff im 20 so have a huge collection i feel like im a kid teenager with all the garbage i have but not sure on how i can talk myslef into getting rid of it any ideas

has anyone had this problem beofre

please help i really need some

Answer
The 1 year rule (if you haven't used it in a year you don't need it) is a good one to apply to all "stuff". I am a confirmed hoarder of "stuff". After the kids moved out I moved from a 6 bedroom house to a 2 bedroom house.

What was left after setting up 5 kids in their own apartments and houses still would have left me with 3 full size moving vans full of "stuff".

I started small but I took one item that I hadn't really used in 20 years and no one else wanted, took a picture of it and sold it on eBay for a whopping $180! OK that was the largest price I have gotten for anything but it is amazing what people will buy and what they are willing to pay. I have pictures of everything that I had and have sold. Almost as good as still having the stuff but the pictures are stored on my computer, I don't have to dust, box, hang, wash or keep track of the "stuff" anymore. Someone who really wanted it has it and any time I think I'm missing it I just go and look at the picture!

I don't know why but people who keep "stuff" often develop and emotional attachment to it. (This is the voice of experience here!) It is stuff. Think of it this way. If you give it away or sell it this gives you more room/$$ to get more stuff.

Try sorting things into 2 piles (or 2 rooms if you have a lot of stuff ;)
Things you Need
Things you Want

The things you Want pile then gets analyzed - why do you want it...what purpose does it serve..is this really a need? - If not then it goes into either a donate or sell pile/room.

When you are done you should have a much smaller amount of stuff. If you really want to get drastic you need to go through your "Need" pile again just to make sure stuff you just "want" isn't in there. (People with addictions are sneaky.)

Good Luck.

I've never been in an AP or Honors class, or any extracurriculars. Will that look bad on my HS transcript?

Thomas J.

I want to get into a good college. A college that people who want to make six figure go to. For example, NYU. I am worried that since my classes don't have much academic rigor, which is a very important determining factor in college admissions, and that I've never been in any extracurriculars, that may hurt my chances of getting into a selective college.

I am in 10th grade. I told my guidance counselor it would mean a lot to me if I was in an AP class in 11th grade. But she refused because she has reason to believe I would fail that class if I was in it because of my grades and the fact that I am not in any challenging academic courses, for example Geometry Honors in 9th grade. Impressing college admission counselors and taking more electives are only two of the prominent reasons why this can make a difference in my education.

Here are my grades. I checked them today:

English: B- (earlier it was a solid C)
Concert Band: A
Jazz Lab: A
Geometry: C (earlier it was a solid D)
Social Skills: A

In the second half of the year, I will take Wellness in place of Jazz Lab for 2nd block on B days, and practical Biology in place of Geometry for 3rd block.

Two of those classes are special ed, English and social skills. I am in special ed mostly because I did not apply myself back in elementary school. I do have autism, but my low grades back in elementary school have nothing to do with me being autistic. The teachers had low expectations for me back in elementary school. I thought I could get out of jail free, but I was wrong. The low expectations carried over to high school.

On top of that, while the regular students only have to take English for 18 weeks, I have to take it the whole year with the special ed teacher, because back in 9th grade English, I was very resistant to directions and didn't do most of the work. I would have loved to take a couple 9 week courses this year, for example, Business Administration and Desktop Publishing. I could have earned more credits in my sophomore year had I was put in English for half the year like the students in the regular courses.

The reason why I get less than phenomenal grades in English and Geometry is because until recently, I never spent any time outside the school building to study for any of the tests or quizzes. I thought I could remember all the important stuff without sacrificing my time listening to "New York, New York" by Frank Sinatra at home. That was true in elementary school, but not in high school. Before the Summer of 2011, when the teacher said my homework was to study, I considered that equivalent to no homework whatsoever. That was true in elementary school, but not high school. Additionally, when I got a test or quiz, I just smiled pretty and hoped for the best. Hard workers NEVER have an attitude like that.

A job I'd love to get is an innovative one at Facebook's new engineering office in NYC. I've been very interested in it ever since it opened a few weeks ago. I am very creative, and I have loved practically anything innovation-related since elementary school.

Up until this year as a sophomore, when I got a D or even an F on a quiz or test, I'm like "If I failed the quiz, I failed the quiz." The straight A students almost never get grades like that on their quizzes, but when they do, they get heartbroken. I never cared about my grades until now. Back in July 2011, my Uncle Drew was able to get himself a custom built 8,000 sq ft (5,000 if the basement is not included) house in Avon, NJ. It has a bar, 100" home theatre, basketball court, elevator, library, private dock, balconies on the 2nd and 3rd floors, a built in sound system on all floors, a fireplace in both the family room and master bedroom, a wall safe, and let me tell you, my family was euphoric when they first laid eyes on this house! Immediately when I evaluated the cost of the house in my mind using mathematics and comparisons of other houses in the area (looks to be about $3 mil), I immediately thought "Get a house like this considering the work I'm giving my teachers? What do I think? I'm on drugs!?" Uncle Drew claims I am just as capable as him to build a house no less than his as long as I work like he did. I WILL NOT settle for less than what I am capable of. I know my grades need to be better to have a life of that caliber.

What do you think about everything I just said? Please be as detailed as possible. The main detail I'm looking for is because I don't participate in any challenging courses and I am not in any extracurriculars, will that hurt my chances of getting into a good college? Will that give colleges like NYU bad impressions of me? I want my life to be very prosperous. I know I don't have to go to a nationally recognized college like that, but I don't want to weaken my goals.
I know everybody has to work harder to satisfy themselves. Everyone should think of your report card as reflecting what your future will be like. A person who gets only D's or close to that on his/her report card will probably be unemployed for most of his/her life, living off social assistance, or worse. A person who gets average marks like C's on his/her report card will most likely have an average job and income, and not be able to afford most luxuries like a fancy car, or boat. But a person who works hard in school and gets all A's, and B's will probably also work hard at his/her job as an adult, and will have a better than average success level and income, and probably an earlier retirement. I believe I am capable of straight As.
The teachers have low expectations for me and don't expect me to do much work since I didn't in the past, but now I have an unyielding commitment to do any work I'm assigned without exception. Uncle Drew had that commitment, so what's preventing me from having it as well?

Answer
First of all, I applaud you greatly for trying to make a difference in your life. The decision to better yourself and go to college will affect you greatly and you will most likely benefit from it. Since you do have autism, this will affect your ability to perform well in school. But this is okay, as long as you try hard and work at it, colleges will take notice of it if they see your grades improving.
Try getting a tutor for classes, it will only help. It's good to care about your grades, this way you can set a goal for yourself and do better next time. Other than getting a tutor, study. Studying will get you through a lot, if you notice you're watching too much tv, turn it off and open up a textbook and try to make sense of it. I guarantee you will learn something out of it. That is how most college kids learn, by reading their textbook.
You sound like an intelligent person and if you apply yourself in school you will do better.
Dont pay attention to your teachers if they discredit you, do some good work and soon they will praise and expect more from you, show them that you can learn well.

So to answer your question; yes. With no extracurriculars or honors/AP classes on your schedule, it will look bad to colleges. Try getting into Key Club or doing some community volunteering and community service. You can join the school play or student govt. Get involved as much as you can because this is a huge deciding factor when college admissions look at your resume. If its blank, they will believe that you don't want to get involved.
For AP/ honor classes, colleges only want to see that you challenged yourself and participate in upper academic classes. For now, take it slow and try convincing your counselor to put you in regular classes and then maybe next year try AP English or Social Studies, I consider those much easier than math or science.
Good luck with high school, you have a way to go, as well as college.

Anyone have any theme ideas for baby boy bedrooms?

Simple themes. I was thinking like "Ocean themed" and I could paint a couple fish on the walls.

Any ideas?

Answer
Zoo/safari themes are really easy to do right now, just because the stuff to get for them is everywhere. There are more options for little girls than boys, so beyond "zoo" if you want a matching crib set you don't have to spend big bucks or forever to find you are kind of stuck to marine/nautical, sports, or vehicles. There are a lot of sock monkeys everywhere these days, so that's what I did for the nursery but man, finding a crib set was a hassle!

I've also seen a really cute little golden books theme, where they bought some old little golden books at good will and then took apart the binding and framed some of the pages for the walls, then just stuck with simple traditional toys for the rest, like his name on a shelf made out of old school wooden blocks.

How should I decorate my home with these themes?

Tropical Latin or Hawaiian bedroom decor ideas?

It has to have purple and green because me and my sibling share the small room and she wants those colors. Please no girly ideas because I am a boy and she isn't girly.

Answer
Purple and green can be used as festive colors in a tropical themed bedroom. You might ask your parents to help you with a DIY tiki room theme. You can make many things yourself. Tropical flowers aren't girly. Think of the patterns on Hawaiian shirts. Think also of dried grassy fibers. Maybe your parents can get you an inexpensive rattan ottoman chairs and grassy rugs. You can add pineapple or surfer style lamps. You can decorate with seashells or anything that makes you think of the ocean. With your parents' permission, maybe you can look on Pinterest for beach bedroom decor ideas. If you can find better prices than world markets for coconut shells and paper umbrellas, that would be great too. You can also use the words such as tropical rainforest, parrots, and tiki to find more ideas. Are you proud of your sandals? Believe it or not some people decorate with a beach sandal theme.

Could you give me decorating ideas for my room?

Katie

I want to give my bedroom a makeover, but I've been putting it off for nearly a year now, simply because I don't have any very solid ideas of what to do.
I suppose I'm worried I'll make the wrong choice in decorations, furniture, or wall color.
Can you help me?
The two main aspects of my life are travel and being eco-friendly.
Thanks so much!!

Answer
The best place to go for ideas is Pinterest. Just go to the top left search bar and enter "eco friendly decorating" or "recycling". This will give you heaps of ideas, a lot of which you can make yourself.

Then type in things like "travel themes", "travel decorating" and "travel decor".

I love Pinterest, it's where I get all my inspiration.

Good Luck!

Mand H

there's a slight nook for my bedroom furniture set (vanity/headboard/bed), am considering finding a floor flutter screen for some privacy/separation. Already have a huge 3-seater futon, but need to purchase all other furniture. Any space-saving suggestions or pieces I should look for that could function for everyday and entertaining (i don't do huge gatherings, but usually several friends). hope this makes sense, and any suggestions would be appreciated!

Answer
a folding table big enough to entertain but small enough to be out of the way when folded away.

a "cupboard" for your tv/music with doors that can shut it away when you want to hide it!

Under bed drawers for extra hidden storage.

Go for light colours to create a more spacious feel.

Does anyone have any pictures or ideas for a techno-style bedroom?

adagio_75

My 15 year old sister-in-law wants to change her bedroom design from a mostly leopard print theme to techno. I want to help her but I really don't know what techno design for a room would look like. She doesn't have alot of money to completely refurnish the room so items like her leopard print area rug, leopard print lamp shades and picture frames will have to be used. Any ideas or pictures would be great.

Answer
When I think of a techno style bedroom I think of lots of fun bright cheery colors with nice white sleek backdrop. For a techno styled bedroom; you could do a modern look. Go for clean, straight lines if possible. I would go for a white or neutral backdrop with pops of color. If some new furniture pieces are in your budget look for white furniture (bed frame, dresser, desk, nightstand)or you can repurpose old furniture and paint it white. For accessories look for bright colors like orange (for a lamp; canât afford a new lamp you can take an existing lamp, sand it down and spray paint it in an high gloss orange (or whatever bright colors she likes), yellow (picture frames, pillows), and green (pillows, vases for flowers, etc.). If she doesnât like those colors, you can do any color combo that she will like. You can find a cheap/good looking area rug @ Wal-mart in white, but if you donât look for white (or another color) bath rugs and connect them together with carpet tape to make a large area rug. You can also change out the lamp shades for a cheap cost or you can cover existing lamp shades with fabric to match the new room décor. For the walls you can blow up her favorite DJ album covers and frame them; or you can get vector silhouettes of DJâs like this : http://garcya.us/blog/free-dj-vector-graphic-art/ or http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/2286211/2/istockphoto_2286211_dj_at_turntable or http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/4306917/2/istockphoto_4306917_dj_silhouette.jpg or http://www.smashingmagazine.com/images/iconsnew/bittbox.jpg http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/5671904/2/istockphoto_5671904_beach_party.jpg or images like these and have them blown up to put them on the walls. You can also blow up varying silhouettes of dancers and put them on the wall (http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/5753237/2/istockphoto_5753237_spring_girl.jpg http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/5768186/2/istockphoto_5768186_just_wanna_have ). Also music notes and headphones (http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/5481959/2/istockphoto_5481959_grunge_headphones.jpg http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/5802696/2/istockphoto_5802696_headphones.jpg http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/5881226/2/istockphoto_5881226_hand_drawn_musik_retro.jpg would be a cool option also. For bedding you can do something simple like white with a bright colored throw and pillows or bright colored bedding with white pillows and one bright colored accent pillow. Also for bedding you can do bedding in a fun solid color and do an image transfer of her favorite DJ or techno image. Hope this gives you a few ideas, good luck :)

Any ideas for a vintage chic bedroom?

Q. I'm 14 and moving house soon. When I decorate my room, I want it really different and chic. I like 'vintage' style things, such as urban outfitter themed decor. I don't want a huge amount of pink. I like the idea of blues. I want one wall to be bright and the others plain. I like things clean cut and simple. Does anyone have any interesting colour themes that i could use or just any tips overall?

Answer
WOW.. i'm impressed! U'r 14 & u know what u what. Not too many do. So when u'r talking the "urban outfitter" I'm not quite sure where u'r heading. R u heading for the 50-60's look or what? As far as blues... for the 50-60 look u can go w/ blu/gr or gr/bl almost like turquoise. IF u WANT the pink, then put PINK tones as in pillows/frames/lamps things like that. I did my friend's 2 grls rooms but they wanted something brighter but I used mocha br along w/ pink & pinky/blu... it really came out kewl. The trends back then were 50's more pink/turquoise/black/white/red then moved into the turquoise/orange/browns/lime greens. I would love to help u if u want to e me. (kadullade@yahoo.com) I love decorating esp for kids/teens.

How can I balance out the orange/peach color of my bedroom?

I live with my parents, my mom painted my room this orange/peach color. It is my least favorite color and I have dealt with it for years. I can't have it painted, but I hate looking at it. We're having a baby boy and for the time being (until we get a bigger place) my 3 year old daughter and he will share a room. My daughter already has everything decked out in pink and full of princess accessories. I haven't bought my crib set or anything like that for my boy yet. How could I have them share a room and have it all tie in together so it doesn't look like one side is for a boy and one for a girl? I'm also looking for relativley affordable options, since they will probably only share for one year at the most. And my paint options are limited. I would have to go with something nuetral so I can easily paint it back to white before we move again, or maybe put up a border to dress up the walls.

Answer
Try a nature theme. Blues, pinks, purples, greens and yellows with rainforest animals, farm life or underwater life is gender non specific. These themes will "grow up" with your kids and not be outdated in a few years.

Anyone have any creative ideas involving housing a family of four in a two-bedroom apartment?

sweet_suns

There are two adults and two children (ages 8 and 6) in the family, and I'm looking for a cteative way to house us in a two-bedroom apartment. Since I have one girl and one boy, each has one bedroom right now, and my boyfriend and I sleep on a futon in the living room and I share the closet with my daughter, he shares the one in my son's room. It's nice for the kids because they each have a fairly large room to themselves, but my boyfriend and I don't have much privacy! I'm trying to think of other ways to make the situation work....and we're looking at another apartment, also with only 2 bedrooms (because getting a three-bedroom where we live is very difficult and it costs almost twice as much as a two-bedroom!). Anwyay, this new apartment we're considering has one of it's bathrooms in the master bedroom, which means whichever kid gets that room will get the bathroom and the other three of us will have to share the remaining bathroom. Is there another way we could set things up?
We like where we live (a block from the beach) and don't want to move to another area!! :P
I really don't feel it's appropriate for an 8 year old girl and a 6 year old boy to be sharing a room (in fact, in some states, it's illegal, if I'm not mistaken!)

Answer
Yes, I know it's taboo and you may be giving them ideas that they can do what you and your boyfriend do. On the assumption that you and your boyfriend are their parents then you can use the, mommies and daddies sleep in the same room concept or you don't do this until you're reached age ___. I don't like the idea of room sharing/division in such a skewed way as you're suggesting with a master bathroom.

You can use room partitions or a camping theme and put the kids in the same room. Bunk beds will give it a more camp like theme.

Or, you can use a princess/knight concept. Knights are the protectors of their ladies, therefore there isn't any "weird" message. However, each of their bunks could have curtains or sheers of some sort from modesty.

Or you could blend the two.

You could also have them pretend they are cars from the movie Cars. I don't believe they show any of the Cars sharing a "garage" in the movie.

That's my two cents. Hope it helps.

Does this make someone a bad parent?

Q. If a man in his early adulthood 18-23 is the legal guardian/sole custodian of three small children,2 girls,1 boy.And provides for them well:more than enough food, nice 2 bedroom,1 1/2 bathroom apt. in a safe neighborhood, clean clothes that fit, works hard, attends college, and is loving. Is he unfit, because he can only afford to have one king sized bed for himself, living room furniture,a kitchen table, and JUST 1 queen sized bed for the 3 children to share?

Answer
He sounds like he's a little tight on money, which is understandable because he's a student. After he graduates then he can get a better, high-paying job.

He's loving and caring. I didn't have a lot when I was growing up, but my parents never let my siblings and I go without food or clothes or anything we needed. My parents didn't let my siblings and I go out whenever and do whatever we wanted. They always watched over us, and if the guardian of the three children can be a good parent, I don't see an issue.

The children are young, so to have them sleep together on the bed is all right. I personally would switch beds (king for children, queen for guardian), but if the children are small, there's no problem with that.

He can always surrender the children, but he doesn't, despite how little property he has. If he supplies the children with everything they need, then he's suitable.

I have a red settee and chair, and currently got magnolia walls and beige carpet. It doesn't look right, but I can't work out what colour carpet and walls to get. I'm thinking possibly very light green or very light grey walls, but then not sure what colour carpet to get. Any ideas welcome!
Thanks

Answer
i think with red settee and chair, beige carpet is fine, if you want to change the carpet, check out for a fawn colored carpet with red specks and it would be a great combination for your room, however, with this magnolia walls do not go well, either you go for fawn colored wall or you choose a light color to match the dark tones of furniture, i think off white with a red trim or cream color will be good,

too much dark colors are not good and green color does not match with it at all. see http://www.aboutfurniture.org/bedrooms.php for more tips on home decor and improvement

Is there a Website that offers Bedding and other Bedroom decor in a Classical Music Theme?

Tyler H

I desperatly need a new look for my bedroom and I am a Classical Musician. So I was wondering is there anything out there to help me?

Answer
Choose deep serene colors for the wall, such as smoky gray or burgundy then add music wall art in silver or gold tones, respectively, to add contrast.

Change things up for classical music aficionados with framed classical musical scores, busts of Mozart or Beethoven set on floor pedestals and cast resin grilles above doorways and windows that recreate the look of elegant plastered reliefs. Paint them in a hue that is similar to the wall color in order to make it look as though an artisan has created them on site.

All kinds of musical themed home decor here:

http://www.themusicstand.com/Music-Home-Decor-s/1.htm

As for bedding, there is more geared toward kids for this theme. If you prefer a more adult look, I'd suggest going with plain bedding that coordinates with the walls, and add music inspired pillows. If you add a lot of other musical decor to the room, the bedding might just be overkill. The site I've provided above will have nice classical looking music note inspired pillows that would look nice added to a solid color bedding set. You might also want to consider purchasing their musical throw and adding it to the bottom of the bed for a pop of design there as well.

Keep the colors soft (not too bright) and/or use a lot of white. Consider natural or white furniture, dark brown furniture may be too heavy.

I would definately not make one of your walls a painting of a sunset. Instead I would find one large (20x30+++++) sunset poster that matched your decor (colors and style) and frame it. It doesn't have to be as obvious as a beach at sunset photo.

Answer
(1) How to Plan a Baby Shower:

You don't have to be Martha Stewart to plan a baby shower to remember. Honoring your special friend or relative with a shower is a touching gesture in itself. How you add your personal touch will send it over the top. Plan a baby shower that the mom-to-be will love.

Instructions
1

Choose a date for the shower. Typically reserved for weekends so that out-of-town guests can attend, the shower will likely need to work for several people's schedules.

2

Ask the new mom to create a guest list as early as possible. It will give you an idea of how many people you can accommodate in a certain venue, while providing you with other important planning info.

3

Choose a theme. What is mom doing for the nursery decor? If the baby has yet to be born, does she know if a boy or girl is on the way? Using the mom's input, find a theme you'll both have fun with.

4

Select and mail invitations. Choose or make invitations based on the theme.

5

Choose what foods to serve. Finger foods are usually a hit--from cheese and crackers, various dips and fruits and veggies to an array of desserts. Avoid serving alcoholic beverages out of respect for the guest of honor.

6

Create or purchase a cake for the baby shower. Bakeries have many fun themes to accommodate the theme of the shower you're hosting.

7

Choose decorations. You may opt for the traditional balloons and streamers, or do something different with fresh flowers as centerpieces.

8

Plan a few games for fun. There are a variety to choose from, from over-the-top goofy to plain and simple, like guessing the number of jelly beans in a baby bottle. The Internet is a great resource for finding creative entertainment for your group.

9

Purchase a special book for the mom-to-be to place memories, details about gifts given and photos from the special day.

10

Buy packages of thank-you cards in advance and have guests self-address their envelopes. You'll save the new mom time when she goes to write her cards.

(2) How to Host a Baby Shower

When celebrating an event as joyous as a baby's imminent arrival, you can be as silly - or as traditional or creative - as you want to be.

Instructions
1

Give yourself plenty of time to plan. Showers usually take place in the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy.

2

Decide whether the shower is for women only. Traditionally, you throw a baby shower for the mother-to-be, with only female friends and relatives as guests. But today, showers that include men - with both expectant parents as guests of honor - have become increasingly popular.

3

Determine the time of day and location - making sure above all that it's convenient for the guest(s) of honor - and approximately how many guests you'd like to invite.

4

Decide whether to make the shower a surprise. Keep your honorees' personalities in mind - remember that not everyone likes surprises.

5

Think about possible shower themes, such as teddy bears, bottles or balloons. Or pick a gift theme like 'Around the House,' assigning each guest to bring a baby gift for use in a different room - the kitchen, the bedroom, the bathroom and so forth. (It's OK to ask for more than one gift per room.)

6

Create a guest list. If the shower is not a surprise, consult the guests of honor about whom they'd like to invite; if it is a surprise, consult a close friend or relative to make sure you don't leave anyone out.

7

Send out invitations at least three weeks in advance. Include directions, surprise-party instructions if applicable, and the theme, if you've chosen one. If possible, mention the color scheme and theme of the baby's room as well.

8

Find out if the parents-to-be are registered for gifts at a particular store. Have this information ready in case any of the guests ask.

9

Make a table centerpiece composed of flowers, a basket and candles, bouquets of baby socks or a baby doll - or buy a centerpiece at a party store. Coordinate the centerpiece and decorations with your theme, if you've chosen one.

10

Decide if you want guests to play any games. If so, buy small gifts for the winners - some possible prizes could be plants, blank books, candles and bookmarks.

11

Make food, buy takeout or hire a caterer. Don't forget supplies - cups, plates, napkins and utensils.

12

At the shower, keep track of presents as the guests of honor open them - this will help them when they're writing thank-you notes.

We have an older four poster oak bedroom set-its sturdy and well made and I just cant bring myself to get rid of it. I would really love to spice up my bedroom decor but cant figure out what would go well with the brown oak "country style" bedroom set. Im more into a contemporary or eclectic look now and I need help with some options...thanks.

Answer
I had a Lane bedroom set. It was solid oak and gorgeous. It had a canopy bed, triple dresser, armoire and two nightstands. I had that set for at least 30 years and it looked like new.

But times and tastes change and I wanted something more modern or at least "different".

Trust me, nothing you do to that "country style" set is going to satisfy you if your taste has changed. Bite the bullet and let it go. I sold my old set reasonably to someone that loved it as much as I did when it was new so I knew it went to a good home.

I then bought a new set that is just what I wanted at this point in my life. I don't go for the "sturdy, well made" (translated "really expensive") stuff anymore (I'm not talking about buying junk either, I got my new set at Ashley) because then you have it forever and get tired of it. If you take good care of whatever you buy it will last you for as long as you love it. Then, when you don't "love it" anymore you won't feel so bad to let it go.

Life is short, you deserve to have what makes you happy today!!

Edited: I work for a store that sells furniture wholesale and I update their catalogs. Believe me when I tell you that if you paint the "country" furniture black, it's going to look like black "country" furniture (I see hundreds of sets of black "country" furniture). Country is country is country. If you try to put modern stuff in, on and around your "country" stuff, it's going to scream "she's trying not to look country, but it's country with modern stuff". It won't go. I had country decorating in my home. My husband bought me a baby grand piano. When they bought it in and set it down amidst my "country" stuff, you could almost hear the piano saying "What's all this stuff?" I had to change my decor to go with the piano (much more sophistocated victorian). Modern stuff has clean lines and there is no way to make country stuff look modern.

I'll say it again, life is short, get what you really want and enjoy it.

What should I do with walls in Master Bedroom when decor is cream and black in the rest of the room?

I bought a beautiful comforter set from target that is cream with black Damask print. my carpet is creamish and I just bought a cream couch that I am accenting with all different kinds of black pillows. I have a large bay window to dress as well as my walls and I don't know what to do!!! My bedroom set is cherry. I have also added lamps with cream and black horizontal strips.

Answer
You should paint the walls Lavender. It is warm and it goes well with black and cream. If you paint the walls cream it will be a whipped cream overload hahaha! but black is too dark too paint a room. cherry is red and will be chaotic . so i say lavender. just put in a few light purple Accessories to tie in the wall color to the room and you are good to go! hope this helps!
