How to redecorate a small bedroom on a budget?

sara

I am a teenage girl and I fully redecorated my room 2 years ago, so I don't want to go all out this time. But I am looking for some small cheap ways to spruce up my bedroom. I am already saving up for a new comforter set. It's $40 and I'm hoping it's the most expensive thing I'll end up buying. So does anybody have any ideas of ways to inexpensively semi-redecorate my bedroom? Keeping in mind that I can't rearrange my furniture because my room is set up so that the only arrangement that works is the way I currently have it.

Answer

Teen girl bedroom theme?

Laurel

I wanted to completely redo my bedroom. It has no architectural flare. Just four walls - the average room. My room is rectangular shaped with my window on a long wall and my door on the opposite. My closet is on the shorter lengthen walls. On the wall with my closet and the opposite wall from my closet, I want to paint it a teal/ turquoise color. On the window and door walls, I want just a plain white. With white and black accents. Kind of a Tiffany's look. I'm girly, but no too girly. Black and white picture frames. I have off-white furniture right now. If I am aloud to get new furniture I want

Answer
Hello, Laurel, and congratulations on redoing your bedroom. Your selection of colors and styles sounds quite sophisticated and will take you through your college years. You really have done your homework, now letâs get the look for lessâ¦.

The white/ black/ turquoise(teal) sounds fabulous. Are you able to paint your furniture? Painting everything semi-gloss white will unify the furniture and make it seem more like a âcollection.â Next, consider adding a set of cubes or a storage bench with fabric 3 cubes and fabric cubes â in turquoise (of course!) at the end of your bed (see http://www.homedepot.com/Martha-Stewart-Living/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ4tg/R-202040744/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053 and http://www.homedepot.com/Martha-Stewart-Living/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ4tg/R-202040769/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053 ). If you arenât able to buy the entire bedroom set, would you be allowed to get the bed spreads and comforter?

For the dressing area, consider two towers and a table top from your local home improvement store. White laminate is the usual surface material and that would coordinate with your color scheme. Add a mirror (white or black frame) and a patterned rug for good measure. Negotiate for the chandeliers! Best wishes and tell me how it turns out!

I applied for my daughter for SSI back in June 2012 for her legal blindness and autism she was excepted a few days ago and they said she wont get her first actual check till October but she gets her back pay here in September but my question is will she get a back pay amount for September too for a total of 4 months back pay or just June through August? I want to start an order for a new bedroom set for her and a few other things she needs medical wise but i dont want to go over her budget, Thanks!
its not all going for bedroom furniture but some of it is and clothes her glasses and food and stuff she needs

Answer
$674 is the last figure I could find for the monthly benefit.

This is a pretty good site
http://www.raymourflanigan.com/kids-bedroom-sets.aspx?pcnid=4

with sets from $900 to $1400 for a youth bedroom. If you need more than 4 month's benefits for furniture, you need to scale back a little.

I'm looking for this furniture, but cheaper. Really like the styles & colors!?

Bedroom decor ideas.?

Bronwyn

I am in a small unit and want to redecorate my bedroom. The walls are white and I have wood panel floors. So far I have a white bedspread with a Raspberry throw across the end of the bed and raspberry and white patterned pillows. I think the whole room needs more but I am not sure what to do to add a bit more interest to the room. What colour bed skirt do you think I should have as I am thinking a Raspberry colour may be too overwhelming. Also would introducing touches of lime green be too radical? What sort of rug should I have as well and what type of furniture? (White or woodgrain?). Your suggestions would be much appreciated :)

Answer
oooh i love your ideas so far, im currently in the middle of redecorating my bedroom so im in decor mode (and getting excited for christmas decorating isn't helping either!), any whom depending on what "raspberry" is to you (more red, or more dark/bright pink?) i think accent colors that would work best are; medium bright blue, lime green, or even dark purple. depending on your age and your taste i think you would be happier with purple or blue in the long run (they are a little more mature and will age better) also, for furniture i think that wood grain is the better choice because it comes in many different colors, styles and you can always re stain old furniture to suit a new style. white is more juvenile and it harder to keep clean. for a rug i would go with your accent color, maybe shag..... just a few ideas, hope you like them!

Okay so I have like THE DARKEST house ever, my moms like, a vampire lol all of our furniture and decor is very dark and vintage and don't get me wrong, my moms a fantastic decorator and our house is beautiful but i'm SO tired of dark this, dark that. So I wanna redo my bedroom in sorta "shabby chic" theme because its really bright and cheery, so I was wondering what are some ideas i can use to create the shabby chic room on a budget (i'll be paying for most of it myself, but i do save up a lot) with a sorta small bedroom with dark blue carpet (I know most shabby chic rooms have light carpet or wood) and what are some colors i can paint it?

Vintage Girl Bedroom?

bruyre

I am looking for a bedding that is vintage and artsy like this:
http://weheartit.com/entry/5320645
or this:
http://weheartit.com/entry/5310812

but I can't find any like them. Sites or links would be great. also if you know how I could go about setting up my room like this:
http://weheartit.com/entry/3477172
like where to get the sheets over the bed and the string of lanterns that size. Also any other design tip you would think look good in the room. Thanks!

Answer
Try Anthropology's home store (though it does tend to be a little expensive)
http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/category.jsp?navAction=jump&navCount=0&id=HOME
if you want something a little less expensive, try Urban Outfitters apartment section
http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/category.jsp?popId=&navAction=poppushpush&isSortBy=true&navCount=27&pushId=APARTMENT&id=A_DECORATE

Both of these places have bedding, decor, and furniture that achieves that bohemian/indie/vintage look you are going for.
follow this link for the lanterns:
http://www.japanesestyle.com/catalog/partywedding/bulk-paper-lanterns
regarding the canopy style thing-- just take 2 or 3 pieces of light (not heavy) fabric of your choice that each piece should be twice the length of your bed. you can either put thumbtacks over the 4 corners of your bed on your ceiling or nail in the fabric in whatever drape-ish fashion you like.
regarding the decor: hit the second hand shops and vintage stores, they will have cool but cheap artsy papers and art that you can hang on your walls. Also, find some photography that you like and pin it all over your walls (magazine clippings will do)
also, find a pretty tapestry (they sell them at urban outfitters or vintage stores) that you like and hang it on the wall, use it as rug, or a blanket.
last but not least: dont be matchy matchy! vintage bohemian style is all about different colors and patterns coming together to create one artsy and pretty room. dont be afraid to take risks!

Do you know of any sites where you can "virtually" decorate a kids bedroom?

I am trying to come up with ideas for my little girls bedroom but I want to be able to see what it might look like first before I buy everything.

Answer
I couldn't find any free sites - they do have software out there to buy - but I did find these ten tips -

Hope this helps just a little bit:

10 Tips For Decorating Kids Bedrooms
by Lee Dobbins
There comes a time when your child is no longer a baby that the nursery room decor simply wonât do. Your child needs a place that he can call his own and which reflects his or her emerging personality.

Kids rooms should be fun as well as comforting and relaxing. When you set out to decorate your childs room, ask them what they like and incorporate some of their favorite themes and colors into the room. At the same time, it might be wise to keep an eye on the future and know that their tastes will change and if you make your decor flexible enough the room can last into your childs teens.

Here are some tips on decorating kids bedrooms:

Use colorful curtains and accents. Show your child some curtain selections and ask them what they would like to see no the windows. Try to stick to bright colored window treatments as these will help the room to look sharper and cleaner.
Adding a valance can help define the opening of the window and lessen bright overhead light from coming in at the top of the windows. It also opens up the window so the room can be lit evenly during the day. Add a colorful or themed shade for privacy at night.

Consider using your childs toys as wall decor. This can serve two purposes - as decoration and to save on storage space. You can create hooks to hang larger toys and add shelves to display the smaller ones. Now if you can only get your kids to put them away!

You can always add paintings and prints in strategic places but make sure they are appropriate to the room. If you can afford it, consider having a wall or room mural painted on the walls in your childs favorite theme such as a magical forest, sports or race cars.

Decorate with photos of your childs most fondest memories. Family pictures of fun vacations or photos of your child on a day of achievement can add a personal touch to his or her room.

Depending on the age of your child, consider adding lifelike statues of his or her favorite cartoon characters or super heroes. This can add a bit of whimsy and make the decor unique.

Plants always add softness to any room and live plants help to clean the air. Just be sure you donât add any plants that can be toxic and that your child is old enough not to dig in the dirt in the pots!

Donât forget about the lampshades when decorating a kids room. Lamps and their shades can be purchased to accent any type of theme. You can also try making your own shades by buying plain ones and embellishing them with accents the compliment the rooms theme. Make it into a project that you can do with your child and they will really feel a sense of accomplishment every time they go into their room and see the lampshade.

Select your bedding to match the theme of the room as well as for comfort. Be sure to buy sheets, pillows and comforters that can be mixed and matched and donât forget to add some extra accent pillows. You can even buy curtains that match the bedding, or if the curtains are not available for the bedding you have chosen, buy an extra set of sheets and make your own curtains.

Turn your childs ceiling into a magical night sky with glow in the dark decorations. These can be fun and even comforting for your child to be able to lay in bed and gaze up at the night stars.

Donât forget to put educational and informative things into your kids bedroom. Include books, charts and toys that add to the childs education. Then your children can be learning while having fun.
Decorating your kids bedroom is a great way to give them a place they can call their own inside your home. You might even find your kid spending more time in there!

Bedroom design help (teen girl)?

queenfanfo

I am possibly getting my room re-done this summer (for my birthday) and was wanting something modern but cool. I already have a few ideas in my head, but the thing is, I don't want to be costing my mum and dad a heap! I will also be contributing money to the furniture and things, so they won't be paying for everything, but it would be really good if I could get everything at a reasonable price. My ideas were:

-A double bed with storage. (This one isn't really an idea because I do need a new bed.)

-A ball chair. (They are cool and look comfortable! They are quite expensive though..)

-A wall sticker of Freddie Mercury or any inspiring quotes or song lyrics.

-Some kind of wardrobe that isn't too chunky and is not wooden.

-A whiteboard or something? Anything that I can kind of use to put on reminders and photos, etc.

-A funky bedside lamp.

I would like to have a completely new room from what I have right now, which is all girly. I feel like I need a more grown-up room, but still one that isn't too old for me and is modern. I am obsessed with the band Queen so any Queen related products that I could put in my new room would be a bonus!
Also, I am sorry if I have come across as picky and fussy and spoilt, but I just want to make sure that my room ends up perfect, and I really need help finding websites and stores in the UK to buy these things for my room. Plus, I have saved up since my last birthday to get money for the room and am still saving at the moment.
Any help would be appreciated. Links are good as well. Thanks :)

Oh, and the colour theme would probably be black and another colour, but I still need to decide on the other colour.

Answer
Designing a room is really fun. If you want a grown up look, go for neutral colors. You said you like black, which is a start. I recommend coffee house colors, like chocolate browns or off-white. You can keep it youthful by adding stylish decoration such as framed posters, plants and draped cloths over your furniture to add a splash of color. I myself an a fan of reds and purples. A white board could be a good idea as long as it doesn't become cluttered with notes. If you want to stay organized, I recommend a planner or a decorative notepad. A few throw pillows are nice, but don't cover your bed in them like some girls do. A nightstand is a good idea, not just for a lamp but it's a good place to store things. I have a friend who loves interior design and goes to places like thrift stores for some things if saving money is your thing. You'd be surprised how much a new paint job can change the look of a bookshelf or jewelry box. (Don't buy something that smells bad. You want your room to be comforting, not worrisome.) The important thing is that you get the most out of your space. Arrange everything in a way that is convenient and easy to clean up. Mirrors are another way to open it up to add the illusion of more space. I would also recommend looking into getting a desk. Homework goes a lot more smoothly when you have an area that has everything you need.

I am 13 and sort of girly
I like really modern stuff and unique
I like purple, pink, black, gray and other colors but orange
Could you post some links for cute room ideas?
Or just describe them?
Oh and by the way..
My room is HUGE!

Answer
Wow. We're really similar. I'm thirteen, sort of girly, I like modern and unique stuff and don't like orange. :)
I know rooms look a lot bigger with lighter colors, and smaller with darker colors.
http://www.pbteen.com/ is a cool site to check out.
Circle beds are cool. So is having a bed in the wall. Literally.
Check out http://furniture-for-small-spaces.com/launch/how-to-make-a-bed-in-a-wall.html so you know what I mean.
This link: http://momoge.com/cool-bedroom-decorating-ideas-from-evinco/ has a lot of cool modern rooms.
It'd be cool to have a solid color for a wall, then have a tree painted onto the wall the same color, but either darker or lighter than the solid wall color.
Hope this helps a little.

Hey my 11 year old sister is interested in redoing her bedroom and she doesn't have any money to buy anything. Her room is going to be black & white based. And ideas of what she can make. Please include directions and items needed to make!

Answer
What she could do is save up money for a few big things. For example, I saved up for a nice duvet and sheet set that I liked. And then you can start DIY things to match. Goodwills and thrift shops have a lot of amazing things she could add into her room and since black and white are two very common colors, it shouldn't be hard to find something she would like.

Paint existing furniture all one matching color. Craft a few decorative items like this: http://howaboutorange.blogspot.com/2007/10/how-to-make-fabric-panel-wall-art.html

Basically just have fun and use your imagination. She's sure to love whatever she puts in her room if she makes it herself. Also another genius idea is if she wants a rug in her room, don't spend a lot of money on an area rug. Find cheap fluffy bathrugs and sew them all together. You can't tell they're sewn together unless you look really hard. Good luck!

Bedroom wall color for teenage girl?

Katie;;

I get to redo my bedroom, and its time for a new look. :)
I'm a horse person, but still kind of girly... so im not sure what style/wall color will suit me. If you have any good websites or suggestions/info, tell me! Thanks!

Answer
Go with your favorite color! Pink walls with black and white accessories are really popular right now.
Go to www.pbteen.com (pottery barn teen) and look at the bedrooms there. It's great inspiration, but they are kind of pricey. If you want, find inspiration there, then shop at like Bed Bath and Beyond.
A good idea would be to find a neat duvet or bedspread that you like, then build the room around that. Try to stick to a few colors as a color scheme, so it isn't too overwhelming. Have fun with it, and good luck!

Teen Girl Bedroom Makeover Items?

lurruhh.

Okay, so as a gift, my parents are letting me re-do my bedroom.
However, I am having a little trouble picking the furniture
My thought was a very relaxed, GO GREEN, music, horse, nature kind of room. We found a very cool vector that I am changing up a bit then painting on my wall.
Here: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1205/543890255_4c04d8ff23.jpg?v=0
My room would stay green, and I would have all white furniture. It would be very pretty.
BUT, I really need some new furniture and room accessories. Which stores or even specific items do you think would help?
Thanks SO much!

Answer
I think that's an awesome idea!! How about a white TV with a white XBox 360 that's power button lights up green when you turn it on ^_^!! I'm not a nerd, I swear... O_O

Are homosexuals discriminated against?

lazybones

If so, could you please state how you/they are discriminated against.

Eg; refused a pint in a bar

Answer
We are denied federal recognition of our marriages and civil unions....which are "separate but equal"...that was ruled discrimination when it applied to African Americans and women. People are attacked, beaten, raped and killed, right here in the USA just because they are homosexual. When my partner and I went to rent an apartment between selling and buying a new home, we were told they would only rent a two bedroom apartment to us, even though we had put most of our furniture in storage and only needed a one bedroom. Heterosexual couples did not have that restriction.

A senior gay couple we know were denied the right to buy a condo in a senior complex because the complex said they weren't "related by blood or married," even though they were married in Canada. An elderly gay couple we know were refused an apartment in assisted living, they were told only one of them could live there, and they even refused to allow the couple to rent two different apartments and live in only one, even though heterosexual couples live in the apartments together. Most of us cannot carry our partners on our insurance. Our partners cannot make medical decisions for each other without a medical power of attorney. Our partners cannot inherit everything they have earned together without a will....family members of the deceased frequently "raid and take" everything that was intended for our partners. Our partners cannot collect our pensions when we have died...like heterosexual partners do. Our partners cannot even bury each other without special paperwork allowing them to make those decisions. We cannot file joint taxes nor establish joint credit. The children we adopt are not equally protected to those adopted or parented by heterosexuals.

Many states will not allow a homosexual individual or couple to adopt a child...yet they will allow us to "foster care" a child, and single heterosexuals may adopt. Single homosexuals are passed over for promotions, not because they are "obviously homosexual, but because it "isn't in the corporation's best "image or interests" to have a homosexual in a position that might draw boycotts from special interest groups. Homosexuals have been denied security clearances just because they were honest about their sexual orientation. Some companies still blatantly refuse to hire, and sometimes even fire, personnel that they suspect as being homosexual. Some are brazen about it, some do the same way they do to avoid hiring people of color.

A lady friend of mine who is...I guess you would say "homely and not really pretty".... was told she was not welcome at a unisex gym because one of the patrons "suspected" her of being lesbian...she isn't, but they wouldn't take her word for it, they revoked her membership. Homosexual kids, are bullied and abused by both children and adults, including some teachers. Often driven to the point of suicide.

A busy gay nightclub in Atlanta was "raided" just over a year ago on a weekend night. The authorities kept changing their story as to why they raided the club. They claimed the club had no liquor license, claimed it had unlicensed male dancers, claimed there was sex going on in the club, and claimed illegal drugs were present in the club, they claimed there were underage people in the club. The cops made everyone lie face down. Searched everyone. Took everyone's ID. The club has a valid liquor license, no drugs were found on anyone, no underage people were there, all of the dancers were licensed and clothed where they were supposed to be, and no one was having any form of sex or in any state of undress to suggest that was going on. When the club went to take the city to court, all of the "evidence" including the call "tip" and the prior "investigation" before it was actually raided....all of the evidence....was erased and had disappeared, including the "back ups." When was the last time you heard of a straight club being put through all of that? Homosexual clubs in smaller cities still have to pay under the counter to stay open. When a gay person calls the police because a crime has been committed against him/her it is often not followed up. When our homes, cars and businesses are vandalized, the guilty party is generally not arrested, even when someone has witnessed the crime.

I could go on for a very long list. There is so much more. This is why we march. This is why we fight in the courts...even though, when we win, the rules suddenly get changed. Regardless of your personal beliefs...always remember...When you actively or passively deny others the same rights that you expect for yourself, you are harming yourself. At some point you or your children will be denied a right or privilege you are entitled to. Because those who discriminate and dissect civil rights, do not stop with one person or group. They continue to erode the rights of others until they are the only ones left with any.

Any Military wives in Fort Shafter, Hawaii?

natalie_ri

Im stationed at Ansbach, Germany. But my husband is going to re enlist soon. So i have picked out Fort Shafter, Fort Carson Colorado and Fort Riley Kansas. I wanted more information on Fort Shafter. I been to hawaii a few times but i wanted more info on the base and what it has. Like On post Housing. how do they look. does each kid gets its own room. i have 2 daughters. and in germany u get a room for each person. Also we get free furnishings. its expensive in europe so we get some free stuff. i know in the usa is diff. we never been stationed any where else. anyway all the help would be good and u can pm me if u wanna tell me more thanks.
forgot one thing. we are Army. Not Marines. so i think it would be diff if i got info for Marine stuff. thanks

Answer
i was stationed at fort shafter with my dad, but that was years ago. we were put up in a temporary apartment in pearl city until housing became available. i think we were there for at least a month. when my dad signed for housing, we were loaned furniture until our stuff came. we had a 3 bedroom house since it was just my brother and i plus the parents. you can probably go to the army housing site to see what the housing looks like and see what they offer. i go back to visit hawaii often and are houses were tore down. not sure what they put in their place. hawaii is a beautiful place to live, but expensive so be prepared. gas is extremely high and so is rent if living off post. stay at the commissary to save money because food is very high as well since they import most of their food.

Teenage Girl Bedroom Ideas?

cheerleade

I'm moving and we are building a brand new house on a lake and I get to design my own room. When we move I will be a freshman in high school so it has be so I can keep it all through high school. I'm into cheerleading, volleyball, music, and fashion. I like most colors, oh and my bed is in the shape on a circle but, I might get a new one.
I was also thinking about maybe doing a light purple, light gray, and white/black color scheme.

Answer
when i was entering my teenage/highschool years the mistake i made was decorating my room in alot of black with like tan walls, it had a very nice, classy, feel to it (it wasnt like gothic black, just classy black. lol if that makes sense.) and i loved it for about a year and a half but when you do a room in dark colors you begin to wish you had painted in a pastel or something like that. whenever ive had a bad day i just want to go straight to my room and chill and when your room is all dark colors, it doesnt really lift your mood. i would suggest (for an older teenage look) i would go with either a light purple, light blue, or light yellow(my favorite), and accent it all with white :) it will be gorgeous and you wont regret it :)
if you DO end up going with darker colors though would definitely accent with a light purple or yellow or something like that :)
i would go with pink. i think you WILL regret that. and if you love pink and want SOMETHING to be pink then maybe do your bathroom or your closet in pink :)

Ways to decorate big bland teenage girls bedroom?

Jasmin

The only things inside my daughters room are her single bed, long glass study desk, a small drawer for socks and things like that. Her bed sheets are usually pink and her wall has a collage of family photos on it. Her wardrobe is also a built in mirror that takes up one wall. She's off at camp right now and I wanted to surprise her. What are some ways I could decorate her room to make it more girly and more bedroom-y? Thanks! :)

Answer
Check out www.pinterest.com There are a TON of awesome decorating ideas, and most of them for super cheap! I decorated my sisters room with ideas from there!

How can I create a bedroom color scheme of lilac/lavender and mint green that isn't for little kids?

Sarah Gibb

I have only ever seen this color combo used in young girls' bedrooms but I'm a fully grown adult and so I'm looking for ways to make it more age appropriate. I am pretty much starting from scratch aside from the lilac duvet I just purchased so I'm open to any/all suggestions.

Answer
Hi - I would perhaps one wall lilac/lavender and the other walls a minty green - perhaps the same or similar to these colours:

http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/twilightmagenta - I am going with this colour - although your lilac/lavender quilt will be a bit paler than this colour - so you will need a deeper colour rather than a lighter colour to make your quilt stand out from the wall - if you know what I mean? :)

The other walls perhaps the same or similar to this:)

http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/exoticbloom

On your bed - you need to put a couple of the minty green cushions to set against your lilac bedding - also with a couple of lavender ones - place the minty green cushions first and then in front of those put the lilac.

You will perhaps need one or two lamps on your bedside tables - you might only have one - but if you have a queen size bed and you have the room put 2 bedside tables and two lamps. - Perhaps something like these? I am going for white and silver because I think it would finish your room off with adding white - hence the lamps I have chosen. And.. also I have chosen the quilt and sham to 'tie-in' the white with the rest of your room. Basically you should be working on three colours - hence me suggesting the white :)

http://www.wayfair.com/Quoizel-Marin-1-Light-Table-Lamp-Q904TBN-Q904TPN-QZ8790.html

http://www.wayfair.com/Dimond-Lighting-Continuum-Table-Lamp-3925-1-3935-1-DIL1829.html

I would also perhaps have a quilt folded at the end of your bed - perhaps something similar to this with just one small sham that will go in between your lilac and green cushions - they need to be in white:

http://www.westelm.com/products/frayed-edge-quilt-and-shams-b519/?cm_src=AutoRel

http://www.wayfair.com/Dimond-Lighting-Continuum-Table-Lamp-3925-1-3935-1-DIL1829.html

I would purchase your furniture if you having new, of course - white furniture would look nice and a dressing table with a nice mirror or you could place a nice mirror above your bed - which I would get with either a silver or white frame.

Perhaps you would like some artwork? Which you could make yourself - get a selection of remnant fabric which can be a mixture of plain and pattern in the colours of your room - perhaps you could purchase one or two extra pillowcases in the same as your bedding and use that? Get a selection of artists blank canvas, either the same size or a mix of different sizes and cut the fabric with enough to go around the back of the canvas and just staple at the back. Once you have done them 'group' them together to make a statement not one on one wall and another on another wall. Have a look here so you can see what I mean :)

http://itswrittenonthewalls.blogspot.ie/2011/08/diy-wall-art-scrapbook-paper-styrofoam.html

If your bedroom has a wooden floor - then perhaps you might like a rug to give your room a luxurious feel? Perhaps something like this - obviously I'm going with white to 'tie-in' your colours again and so you don't end up with too much of the lilac or green :)

Well, I hope you like my design and good luck with your 'decorating' and 'creating' :)

Where can i find teen bedroom accessories?

Q. Good websites to find comforters, night stands, dressers, desks, vanity, lounge chairs, throw pillows, blankets, rungs, lamps, string lights, wall decorations, storage, picture frames, mirrors, decorative cork boards and magnetic dry erase boards, desk accessories? I want to do a zebra and hot pink theme and Im trying to find accessories to match.. Please help! I've already looked at PBteen.com and wakeupfrankie.com, but they're a little pricey... Any othe websites?

Answer
I'm assuming you've already bought bedding, if not, maybe something like this:

http://www.beyond-bedding.com/hot-pink-zebra-print-full-queen-teens-kids-bedding-set.html

For furniture, try ikea.com - it will be inexpensive and you'll be able to get the night stands, dressers, and desks there. I'd go with either white or black furniture to complement the bedding.
You can also try walmart and target if you are concerned with price.

Wall decorations- The bedding set shows wall hangings which can be purchased at the same site as the bedding (beyond-bedding). In addition, you can buy decorative throw pillows, windows treatments, Funky Zebra Fabric Memory/Memo Photo Bulletin Board, and even lamp shades

Frames - Buy these anywhere. You can get these very cheaply. I'd suggest a $1 can of spray paint so you can change the color of the frames for a customized look (I'd spray a few black, a few white and perhaps a few hot pink - though you could easily paint a zebra design - cheap and easy)

Mirrors - Again, buy the cheapest mirror you can find and custom paint it (Walmart or other discount store). If you must have a zebra print mirror, check this one out:

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=zebra+mirror&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=8249285435254738615&ei=pIckTc7QL8T48Aayo8CGAg&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CDgQ8wIwAw#

Rug - Walmart has several different style choices. Like this one:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Home-Dynamix-Zone-7160-Zebra-Print-Rug/12087183?findingMethod=rr

Blanket/Throw: Again, walmart has a cheap solution that comes in several colors

http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_query=zebra+throw&ic=48_0&Find=Find&search_constraint=4044

As far as accessorizing goes, keep in mind that a little zebra goes a long way. If you have zebra print bedding, you may want to consider solids for the lounge chair and/or throw and accent pillows. I'd pick up a lot of solids for accessories (black or white vase maybe with hot pink flowers) again, solid colored picture frames. Walmart also sells cork boards. You can paint these or cover them in a zebra fabric (or complementary fabric) and embellish it with grosgrain hot pink ribbon.

Please remember that a cheap can of spray paint can help you achieve the look you are after. Best of Luck.

What can I do to my bedroom to make it more high tech?

Awsome

I am redecorating my bedroom to make it really high tech and likable. (The only problem with my room is its pretty small.) Right now, I have white walls, a white bed, a glass/black/silver Sharper Image L style table (for my computer and presentation monitor and where I write.) I also have a 32" flat panel TV with a hidden HDMI cable running to my laptop. I'm going to buy a dresser soon so I can put cloths in it and the TV ontop. Anyone know any good looking dressers? I ordered an xbox 360 arcade (because with a hard drive its too noisy) and will hook it up to my flat screen so I can play games. and thats about it.

I need something like wallpaper but wallpaper looks too old fashioned. Is there anything that can make my room look better? Something close to the top of the ceiling? Like shiny wallpaper? Oh yeh, I was also thinking I will buy digital picture frames when I get money and put them around my room to show slideshows of photos and maybe play videos.

Answer
Try www.westelm.com for tech-ie dressers and other furniture.
You can build your own area rug at: www.flor.com
www.urbanoutfitters.com has very interesting and hip furniture, decor, and accessories for your apt. like wall stencils, curtains, etc.
Try some artwork for your walls. You can get affordable, original artwork at: www.ugallery.com.

I'd try to stick with a relatively monochromatic theme and maybe add a bright color element.

What should i get for Christmas?

What themes have your nurseries been? And what are your favorite themes you have seen?

Jules, E,

For your child/ren, what nursery themes have you done? And what were some of the favorite themes you have seen? We are looking for theme ideas for a fourth child and I feel sorta "tapped out."

Our daughter (oldest) was butterflies with purple and green color scheme.
Our son (middle) was lions with a dark green and tan color scheme.
Our son (youngest right now) has dogs with light blue, tan, and chocolate color scheme.

And I just want to see what others have done and if they have seen any really inspired nurseries :) We have the guest room painted dark teal and bright green (not ugly, just different) and I would love any ideas that might not make us have to repaint :)

Answer
I believe in using neutral colors on walls rather than painting them special for the baby, because they are little for such a short time! There is a lot that can be done with textiles and wall decals.

What I would like to do for my baby is a theme involving local wildlife: deer, owls, etc. A lot of baby decor involves African animals, but I'd rather get my kid interested in animals we can see when we walk in our own woods.

For dark teal and bright green, I think an island/aquatic theme could be fun. I am thinking of palm trees, dolphins, etc. You can probably find some decals in this theme on Etsy.

In need of guidance for our first Samhain, please?

Le Fae

Okay, so it won't be my first Samhain per se, but I do want this year to be the first time I construct an altar and really focus on remembering those that have passed. I have been 'studying' pagan and wiccan traditions for over 10 years, but never felt like I could call myself a true pagan or wiccan, I really would like that to change.

I was blessed with my first child this spring, (a boy!) and would really like to start him off on the proverbial right foot. He will be just 6 months on October 31st, so right now it really is more for my husband and I than him, but we feel that our memories are just as important as our sons.

My question is how do other pagan/wiccan families celebrate Samhain with their children?

Also, subject of great debate for us, what is the proper pronunciation? *lol* 'Sow'in', 'Sow-ween', 'Sam-in'?

Thanks and Blessed Be!
I am sorry Valentina, but I fail to see how observing the religion of our ancestors that respects those that have come before us and shows love to nature and Earth is childish.

Answer
Congrats on the baby. (sigh) family... I love family. ;-)

In my family we're just used to sow-WHEN. For us it is a 3 day festival, it's gotten kind of big over 20 years, so warning, this is long, lol:

The week leading up to it, we begin to really clean the house. We are big on crafts & making our own decorations. We do some more Americanized "halloween" decorations outdoors (not too gory) but inside it's very Pagan harvest / day of the dead influence.

We have a buffet table in the dining room we set up the altar on for major Sabbats. Harvest decor, skulls & death symbols (nothing gory), candles, cauldron, things from those who died (my dad's lighter, my grandmother's pin, etc).

We write the names of our dead on paper and hang it over the altar... it could be an actual ancestor, pets, recently deceased friends/family, or even celebrities (like I always include Chaucer because he's my favorite writer, and Ben Franklin because he's my hero).

We often cut out a "tree" shape from a grocery bag and hang it above the altar, we call it the "tree of rememberance" and write the names on colored paper leaf-shapes and stick them on the tree. Sometimes we make chains of apples (like paper dolls) and write the names on them.

We bake bread on the 30th morning. Sunset on the 30th we light the "Sun Candle" (we light it at every sabbat) and say prayers & welcome the ancestors, have a big feast and make offerings to them and remember their names and sit around after dinner tell the kids their stories. Sometimes we laugh, sometimes we cry, sometimes both. It's great because the kids 'know' them even though these people died before they were born.

On the 31st, we will wake up, carve jack-o-lanterns & bake pies & such, start our traditional big cauldron of beef stew & other little details, then take a nap... then the kids get into costume and go out trick or treating for a couple of hours.

We often have family/friends come over, so the kids return and we start the prayers & a small, simple, informal family-friendly ritual in honor of the death of the Sun God... and we blow out the Sun Candle and cover it with a black cloth... we bless the feast and make offerings, then we feast.

The kids commence with candy trading negotiations while we clean up a bit and digest, then we tell seasonal stories or the kids do some kind of seasonal enactments (basically they act out the stories).

The kids (and whoever else wants to, like usually my husband who is not a night owl) goes to bed... adults who remain/stay up have a more formal ritual, may include spells or divination or something, or just a discussion (like the year a dear friend died, we just mourned and comforted each other).

We sleep in on Nov. 1st (some people usually sleep over). We wake up, eat leftovers, usually starting with pie, lol. We bury the offerings on the altar & the remains of the sun candle (we make a new one every Yule). We say a closing prayer at Sunset about how life goes on & death is a part of life. Ah, the circle of life. The kids like to sing that song.

Ideas for decorating a kids bedroom for 2 girls and a baby boy in a skull/pirate theme (girls 10 and 5,boy 1yr?
Im looking for lots of ideas
it needs to be neutral without being too boyish
but also not girly, obviously...
it also needs to go with all the ages as well
I was thinking skulls for the girls since they like them
and more pirate for my son
but give me your ideas
with details like colors,etc...
thank you

Answer
As much fun as you might think it will be for them I agree with answer one. The relationship to a skull and crossbones is not at all cool for that age group. I've never in my life known a female that LIKED that?

I'm most curious about why they sleep in the same room, first of all???

On the cheap I'd go with the Pirates movie series posters with Johnny Depp.
Not knowing your budget but knowing children and that their tastes and moods can change daily if not hourly, I'd go with making it a tropical thing, even if it only suggests Pirate or Castaway, or Swiss family Robinson, etc.

Paint is cheap, foamcore cut outs of tropical vegetation, even a jungle theme with animals seems more enjoyable to me. Most especially for a 5 year old, what you suggest is stimulation and a cool place maybe to hang out, not a MY SPACE room that should be a place to relax.

Ideas for kids bedrooms?

NeedAdvice

We just built a new house and we are getting ready to move in. I am wondering if anybody has ideas for themes for their rooms/ decorating ideas??

I have 6 kids so its alot to think about.

a boy age 9, a boy age 7, two girls both 5, and two more boys both 3.

one of the youngest boys i am already doing a jungle theme but i am stuck on all the other rooms.

any advice??

Answer
Jungle theme is so common, don't you think? I mean, no offense.
Make sure to include things the kids like.

For the oldest boy, do something simple but include things like hobbies. Remember, he's going to grow up quick and before you know it, he'll be in middle school, interested in other stuff. Pick colors he likes. Black or wood furniture sounds good to me. For decorations you could do posters of things he likes, such as video games.

For the 7 year old... I suggest cars. I think there's lots of things that you could find that have to do with that. For colors, cars mostly remind me of red, royal blue, and gold. I like the idea of red walls.

It depends if the girls are sharing a room or not. If they are not. Green and purple sounds nice. It would be nice if you did a sort of inverse thing. Like color one girl's walls purple and the other's green, one girl's curtains green and the other purple. Things like that. White furniture would look nice.

For the 3 year old, do a dinousar theme. Colors: green and red. I don't have many suggestions for this one.

Toddler bedroom decor...?

Nanabanana

My daughter just moved to a "big girl" bed and so I went out and bought her a new bedspread and all white furniture. The comforter is bright pink, lime green, purple, orange and teal. I am trying to decide what color to paint the walls. I was thinking of doing a lighter green (like lime but lighter) and then doing a bright pink stripe around the room, or else painting the room a light teal with a purple stripe...does that sounds too "grown up" for a 2 year old? I want it to be a room she can grow into but I don't want the colors/design to be too much for her. What do you think? Any other cute decorating ideas? I hate just one color walls so I'm trying to use two colors to decorate...Thanks!

Answer
I think a soft lime green with a medium pink strip would be adorable! I don't think it would be too grown-up. It should serve her well into preteens, at least! Another idea for longevity in a kid's bedroom: paint the walls a solid color and then decorate them with the peel and stick "Wallies" or other precut images that can be adhered to the wall temporarily. You could put some flowers or butterflies on the wall now, and then when she gets older and wants something different, you could put polka dots or something geometric like that. Good luck!

help with bedroom decor?

Rachel

I'm 15 and i still have the same room paint from my nursery; its a light baby pink. my parents wont let me repaint it though. i have plain white curtians too and im not allowed to buy new ones so that even adds too the babyish feel. some of my furniture is cherry wood and some of its painted white. my rug is plain white as well. this room feels like a five year old could live here and i hate it. so i need help with what to do with my room. i wanted a zebra print bedspread to match my loud personality but i think it might contrast too much with the soft pink walls. i really have no idea what to do because my room just isnt me at all and i dont know how to fix it. i was thinking maybe a bright colored animal print canvas above my bed? but it might contrast alott. i cant think of a color scheme to to go with the pink either. please help? any idea are appreciated

Do you do any babysitting or have a means of earning some money??? When my son was 15, he wanted this expensive skateboard & shoes & I couldn't afford them, being a single mom with no child support. So I made him a deal - if he earned half of the cost somehow, I would pay the other half. He wanted these things so bad that he found a job at a golf course picking up golf balls. It took him the whole summer to save up, but he did, & he found it a rewarding experience. He learned just how long it takes to earn something. He is 25 now & still talks about it.

So here's what I'm saying - see if your parents would be willing to change some things in your room if you earned at least half of what it would cost. Approach it this way - if you buy new furniture, it could go with you when you move out & get your own place...basically, an investment in your future life away from home. Paint & curtains at Wal-Mart costs very little, so you could start there once you earn that money.

I think your parents will be very impressed that it means so much to you to show your coming-to-adult personality & that you're willing to put forth the effort to achieve this goal!!!

BTW, I like the idea of the zebra print with the pink...I just did this in my step-daughter's room (with her help) with bedding from JC Penney. We did pink, lime green, & zebra print. Check out their website.

Go for it, but be willing to contribute to the work & expense!!! Bless you.

Need ideas of kid items to sell at a craft show?

smaceroni

I am having a booth at our local craft show. me and a friend are selling bows, bow holders, burp cloths, headbands, and pacifier holder. I need a few more ideas for boys or something that can be unisex. Does anyone know of anything I might can buy in bulk and resale or something that I might can make that isn't too pricey and complicated?

Answer
You should make something like this - Dapper Snapper - basically you put it through the belt loops to tighten the waist on pants for your children that are too big:

I made a few in fun patterns for our twins - similar to how you would make a pacifier clip.

Other things that we have seen at craft shows are signs that you can hang in a child's bedroom with their name on it, personalized Christmas ornaments, bibs etc . . .

how tocreate interest in studying in child?

aixambi

Answer
Successful studying in your childâs room

First of all, the quality of study will be impacted by the space in which your child will be studying. It must make them feel comfortable, no matter its size, arrangement or décor. Their entire focus should be on learning and allowing them to feel secure enough in a designated space is the key to success. They need to withdraw from the world for a while in order to do this. They need inspiration to study.

Other important factors are that the space is well-lit and well-ventilated. Make sure that you are available to them in case they hit stumbling blocks and need to ask a question. Let the rest of your family know that this is âstudy timeâ and keep the noise levels down as well as not allowing anyone to go in the room to distract them. Setting a timer might also be a good idea but make sure it isnât one that clicks. Giving them breaks will help ease the study time. Make sure they have all the supplies they need in the desk drawers or on an open bookcase near their desk. These might include pencils, erasers, markers, crayons, stapler, tape, glue, construction paper and loose-leaf paper.

A bookcase will give your child an area to keep his supplies, as well as dictionaries, thesauruses, reference books and even a set of encyclopedias. You can set up âinâ and âoutâ boxes on them to keep track of his progress and completed assignments. Also aiding in this would be to set up a dry-erase board or chalkboard. Along with your child, mark the assignments and dates they are due on the boards. As they are completed, they can be marked off. This will give your child a great sense of accomplishment. Monitoring will not only ensure that the assignments are done but also involves you with your childâs education which helps them have a sense of pride and that theyâre not all alone in this.

Find comfortable furniture that encourages them to sit up. Because of their discomfort, they may be distracted by hard, straight-backed chairs. These may keep them awake but theyâre not a good choice. Thereâs a fine line on comfort. They may fall asleep or daydream if you just allow them to do their studying while reclining on sofas or beds. Itâs also not a good idea to place the desk to their bed for this very reason. Itâs easily accessible for them to lounge and forget about their homework.

Their study area should definitely have a desk with a large work surface, a comfortable chair and good lighting. Their desk should not be facing a wall as this will make them feel left out even more of other kids playing outside or family activities going on elsewhere in the home. They will feel âboxed inâ which will create an obstacle in their endeavors. They should be able to see the door when someone enters their room as this will make them continue to feel connected to the outside world. If the space is limited, a good solution is one of those bunk bed units with a study incorporated underneath it. They are more likely to study if they have an actual study area instead of using a bed, the floor or the dining table. This will also help on clutter around the house because all of their school books, papers and backpacks will be in their room.

Using objects of interest will promote interest and discourage boredom. Put a globe in their room to promote their geography studies. Maps are also a good tool for this purpose. They not only create interest and curiosity but are also suitable artwork for a childâs room in a design sense. Seashell collections, rock collections, leaf collections or crystal collections will keep them stimulated if they need to take a break from their actual studies and do something else with their hands besides writing. These natural elements may also help them think less about the fact that they arenât outside. Having the outside be around them inside creates energy for them to continue with their work.

TVs in the bedroom should be eliminated. They not only make children much less likely to study but also donât allow them to fully rest. Children score the lowest overall if they had a TV in their bedroom and also no computer at home. Those who started out with no TV but added one to their bedroom during the school year, scored lower than students who had their TV removed from their bedroom during the school year.

Instead of using the refrigerator as a bulletin board, create an achievement area in your childâs room. Seeing their awards, ribbon, trophies, papers with good grades and letters of recognition will give them a sense of accomplishment. This will reaffirm that they are doing a good job and getting recognition for it which will encourage them to keep up the good work.

It will also help if you make a space for books and school materials. As your child comes home, there should be a place to put their backpacks and books. As they hang up their coats, take off their hats and shoes, they will have a sense of unwinding from their day. Just as adults throw down th

Where's all the creative mama's at?! I need idea's for a toddler's beach/nautical themed bedroom.?

Q. My husband and I are redoing our son's room as part of his birthday present.

We have decided that we want to do a beachy/nautical style room. I have looked for bed sets and what not that go with the theme but so far I've not been impressed with any of them. Most of them are too patterned or look too babyish.

We want this room to be able to last him for a few years. Do you have any idea's of decorations or colors or anything at all that you could help me out with? I want it to be cute and kid-appropriate but still nice...

Any suggestions or idea's would be greatly appreciated!
Great answers guys! I've gotten idea's from everyone! It's going to be hard to pick BA.. Thanks everyone!

ALSO:
â¢Lighthouses and sailboats are de rigueur in nautical design, of course, and you can incorporate them into your bedroom in lots of different ways. Look for paintings of lighthouses and sailboats, or look for old photos (or take your own) of lighthouses and boats that you can frame and hang on the walls. You can find a plethora of model lighthouses and sailboats in just about any home décor store; start a collection and display them in the room. If your bedroom is large enough, sailor flags make a nice addition as well. A ship in a bottle is also an excellent touch.

â¢Another option for wall art is framed sailing maps. You can find antiqued maps that trace the routes of the explorers, or you can use modern maps as well.

â¢Anchors and oars, like lighthouses and boats, are common nautical motifs. Look for pillows or bedding that incorporate these images. If you have enough space, a rough hewn oar makes an eye catching wall piece.

â¢Port hole style mirrors for your walls will give your room that âat-seaâ feeling.

â¢Last but not least, donât forget the accessories. From your lighthouse collection to seashell collections, sea grass plants, driftwood, and sand dollars, you can bring anything that reminds you of nautical adventures into your bedroom. Also, use your accessories to bring in those bold nautical colors. Pillows, blankets and throw rugs add red and navy to your room without overdoing it. Remember, nautical style is casual and all about adventure; donât be afraid to experiment a little until you have your perfect nautical paradise

Can you tell me some ways to organize a kid's room in a pretty way?

Can you tell me some ways to organize a kid's room in a pretty way?

Answer
Creating a jungle theme kids bedroom is an opportunity to use really fun colors and prints. Consider painting the room a fresh green or a bright yellow to provide a warm and exotic backdrop for the rest of the room's elements.

Instead of typical window treatments, think about getting some silk vines and foliage from the craft store and draping them around the windows as you would with a scarf curtain. Then perch stuffed parrots or monkeys nearby to round out the jungle canopy effect.

You can use jungle themed bedding, or simply use bright solids and stripes, and accent the room with throw pillows in animal-print fabrics. There are several sources for wall stickers in a jungle theme to add even more visual interest.

Fairy Tale Princess Themes

Many elements of décor for little girls' rooms lend themselves to dreaming of once upon a time and far, far away. From canopy beds to eyelet and lace and pale pink, you may already have many of the elements in place to make your daughter's room a real Princess's room. To bring the fantasy one or two step closer to reality, rely on some paint techniques and a few choice accessories.

Paint the ceiling a sky blue and sponge paint on some clouds; turn the walls of your girl's room into castle walls with faux painting techniques, and embellish them with stenciled runners of ivy â you can even add some silk ivy from the craft store for additional dimension. Swath tulle or silk flowers where you'd otherwise put a valance and curtains, and be sure to add a stuffed frog prince someplace in the room ⦠just for a bit of whimsy!

Pregnant- need help with room/furniture themes!?

A person

I just found out that I'm pregnant with twin boys. I already have two other boys, and since we have to make room for the babies anyway, my husband are doing a little remodeling.

We want to put my boys Gabe (7) and Parker (4) in one room and the twins Blake and Bentley in another room. The rooms are conjoined by the bathroom though, which we really like. The twins room will be jungle themed, and the older boys will be sports themed.

For the twins, we are looking for cribs, dressers, high chairs, and anything else that revolves around the jungle theme.

For the older boys room, we are looking for beds, dressers, and anything else that revolves around the sports them.

And lastly, my husband and I need help with car-seats for the twins. What brand should we go with?

Links to websites/pictures/stores would be great! The more specific, the better. Thank you!

Answer
The safest car seat is one that fits your child, your vehicle, and is used correctly each and every time. The brand of the car seat doesn't matter.

Never buy a car seat unless your try it out in your vehicle. Not all car seats fit all cars. You need to find the one that will fit your vehicle (and preferably easy to install). Toys R Us will let you try out the display model in your car. Car crashes are the leading cause of both disability and death for children under 12 years of age in the United States. Statistics show that 95% of car seats are used or installed incorrectly. Car seat manuals ARE confusing, so please get your seat checked by a child passenger safety technician (CPST). It should be absolutely FREE to get your seat checked. You can find one at http://www.seatcheck.org/ State laws provide very minimal levels of protecting children in car crashes. I have many links regarding best practice. (I hope these links are helpful)!

On every rear facing car seat, the harness needs to be positioned at or slightly below the shoulders. It is important because in a crash, the child will slide toward the top of the car seat shell. Infant car seats are outgrown rather quickly, usually within 6-12 months. If you still want the convenience of an infant car seat, I would go with the Britax B-Safe or the Graco Snugride 35 as they have really slow slots for the harness. The Graco Snugride 35 has an approximate low slot of 6 inches with the infant pad. The Britax B-Safe has naturally slow slots so you don't have to use any infant inserts- the lowest slot is about 5 and 1/2 inches. There are more car seats, that fit newborns- the idea is to get your tape measure out and measure the lowest slot. I would go with a slot less than 7 inches. The Chicco Key Fit 30 is also a good car seat for newborns. Just remember that some infant seats come with infant inserts that may not be on the display model. This will affect measurements.

Did you know that a rear facing child is 5 times safer than a front facing child? The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all child remain rear facing in convertible car seats until they are at LEAST 2 years old. They recommend this for a very important reason. Those reasons are described in the next two links:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvyIv9QVRBE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8gU9zzCGA8

Also, best practice dictates to keep kids in a harness until they are mature enough for a booster seat. Most kids aren't mature enough for a booster until they are around age 5-7. Click the video below to learn the safety benefits of keeping kids in a 5 point harness longer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5m0hipjB-d8

A booster seat's job is to position the adult seat belt correctly on a child. An ill-fitting seat belt can cause severe injury in a crash. Kids need to use a booster seat until they past the 5 step test which is descibed in the links. Most kids need to be using boosters until they are 10-12 years old.
